Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 895: Breaking ()
Everon’s expression was grim as he examined Eira. Turning to Kaideon, he grimaced, "She’s been held in a loop between life and death for too long. It’s drained her will and comprehension of reality."
Everon had rushed over as soon as he heard. In his usual fashion, he’d sent out everyone who wasn’t directly related to Eira before performing his examination.
Jian, Xenon and Cassian left on Everon’s urging. Neveah, Kaideon and Nolan were the only ones left in the cavern.
"She’s not dead. But she’s not quite alive either."
Neveah winced visibly. She already expected that. She’d done her best to protect Eira even knowing that.
Because even when her memories were far beyond her grasp, she knew somewhere deep down that Kaideon deserved this moment...needed it, to finally get a closure.
Whatever he decided from here on out, there would at least be no more regrets.
"Are you saying... nothing can be done?" Nolan asked carefully, "That there’s no possibility...not even the slightest chance..."
Everon shook his head, "That is not my meaning."
"Someone seems to have attempted to restore her life. And whatever they did, it made some difference."
Neveah kept her silence. There was no need to bring Karan up. He had suspiciously disappeared before the wedding, but he couldn’t have gotten far. She would take care of him privately.
"With magic alone, it will take years. With medicine, decades... for there to even be a chance. But with a concentrated and controlled use of both..." Everon trailed off, eyeing Neveah.
"It will be difficult. Ailments of the mind, and those spurred by magic are too complex."
"It will probably be the hardest ailment I have been faced with in all my centuries as a healer...it might happen tomorrow, or in years." He pursed his lips, his eyes shining with determination. "But I’ll bring her back. Whatever the cost."
Kaideon nodded firmly. "I’ve known you for centuries and you have not once failed. You’ve brought the dead back to life right before my eyes...you have my absolute confidence."
"Thank you, Ron." Neveah smiled gratefully.
Everon waved his hand dismissively, already too invested in his examination to bother with etiquette.
It was very typical of him. There had been times even Jian was ignored or thrown out of his work space.
"Father..." Neveah called, "I’ll leave first."
Kaideon turned to Neveah, a complicated expression in his eyes. It seemed to be a mix of too many emotions that he couldn’t comprehend.
She smiled, walking right into his awaiting arms.
"How can I ever thank you?" Kaideon muttered, placing a kiss on her hair. "You changed my fate, the moment you walked back into my life. You are my miracle, Veah."
Neveah’s heart warmed. "I think, they both... changed our fates."
Kaideon hummed in agreement. She didn’t have to make a direct reference. He knew as well as she did, that she would never have stepped foot in the stronghold without Xenon and Jian.
Jian had given her a second chance at life. And Xenon... he’d kept his vow to find her earlier in this lifetime.
Neveah’s heart throbbed painfully.
"Go to them." Kaideon muttered quietly, "Don’t push them away. Be vulnerable. They’ve earned it."
She exhaled a shaky breath. Tears stung her eyes but she nodded once.
When Kaideon finally pulled away, she nodded over to Nolan who reciprocated with a grin.
Neveah then headed out of the cavern.
Jian and Xenon waited in the royal stud. Their gazes swung to her the moment she emerged from the dark hallway.
Cassian was also present. But she didn’t say a word to any, she just made her way out of the study.
"Veah!"
She ignored the call and headed back to the quarters she’d woken up in.
Just as she walked in, the silence was shattered as the door swung open again.
A fuming Xenon stormed in and Jian wasn’t far behind. He equally didn’t look impressed.
"What have I said about walking out on me?" Xenon’s tone was calm, but his eyes reflected the storm he suppressed.
She paused in her tracks. But she didn’t turn.
"Are you seriously going to keep this up??" He demanded, "I know my wrongs, okay?! I didn’t protect you! And a thousand apologies can’t make up for it. I’ve hated myself every day for the past months! I’ve hated Jian just as long!"
"Hit me! Blame me! Just...do something! Say something! This silence is killing me!"
"Xenon... Back off." Jian interrupted before he could say any more.
"Oh come of it!" Xenon snapped right back. "Do you think holding in your anger and feigning calm is misleading anyone?! You froze yourself in your damned bath! So don’t act like this isn’t driving you insane!"
Neveah’s fists clenched. Her heart constricting.
"We all lost something! We lost each other! We lost our child! And I just want to hold you, okay?! If not for you, then for me! Because I feel like I’m in a thousand pieces and I don’t know how else to put myself together!
"So don’t ask me to keep this patience thing up! I won’t do it! I cannot and will not!"
He was panting rapidly when he finished.
Jian heaved a sigh. "Veah... I... he’s right. I can’t do this either." His tone was heavy,
"I can’t be apart from you any longer. I... know you’ve been through a lot. And I know it’s selfish of me, and I’m trying not to be. But..." He trailed off, "I’ll accept any other punishment for failing you... just not this."
Neveah turned slowly, her hands trembling. In that moment, the sob caught in her throat tore its way out. And then another.
She dropped low to a crouch, trembling from head to toe. Loud sobs wracked through her, and she clutched tightly to her own arms like she could keep herself from falling apart in that way.
"Beloved..." Jian exhaled shakily, kneeling by her side. He pulled her into his arms, and she didn’t protest, clinging to his robes.
Xenon came up on her other side, slowly stroking her hair. The bond flared to life and she didn’t even attempt to block them out. She’d fought so long and so hard, she didn’t have any strength left in her to fight.
Their abundant warmth flowed through it. Their tenderness. She felt the depth of their love for her. Their guilt, their pain, and it made her sob harder.
She wasn’t certain for how long they remained that way. Or who held her at what time.
It could have been a few minutes. Hours... even days.
But for the first time in longer than she could remember, she sobbed her throat raw.
Till her heart didn’t feel as heavy...
