On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 13: He Was Married
Chloe’s expression was cold. "You know your own motives better than anyone."
Silas smiled. "You know it too. You just refuse to admit it."
Chloe shot him a glance, unwilling to continue the conversation. She turned her gaze to the female Pharmacist cowering in the corner, and her hands were pressed over her ears, too afraid to listen.
She then strode toward her. " Do you have the Heavenly Star Grass or not?"
The female Pharmacist nodded, then added, "I’m sorry. I was... I was threatened."
"Give me the Heavenly Star Grass."
After a moment’s hesitation, the female Pharmacist fetched the Heavenly Star Grass and carefully handed it to Chloe.
Chloe took the herb and turned to Silas. "I need to leave now."
With that, she headed for the door.
Three tall, well-built men blocked the doorway.
Chloe looked at the man in the center. She didn’t say a word, but her meaning was clear with the expression - get out of the way.
The men in turn, looked to Silas. They wouldn’t dare move unless his boss gave the order.
Silas walked over and added a warning. "Be careful of that Lockwood guy. If you’re in danger, contact me immediately. I won’t be leaving Crestfall for the time being."
Chloe said coolly, "You should just leave as soon as possible."
Silas’s lips curled. "I refuse."
The corner of Chloe’s mouth twitched. Ignoring Silas, she turned to the men blocking the door. "Move away."
The men looked to his boss again.
Silas nodded. The men immediately stepped aside and opened the door.
Chloe strode out.
Silas walked to the doorway and watched as she got into a taxi, which then vanished into the stream of traffic.
A subordinate at his side asked, "Boss, are you just going to let Miss Chester leave like that?"
Silas’s handsome, almond-shaped eyes narrowed. ’She can run, but she can’t hide.’ He then asked, "By the way, any news on that Lockwood guy?"
The subordinate thought for a moment. "He got married recently. Does that count?"
Silas raised an eyebrow. "He got married?"
"Yes. But the woman he married is a complete mystery. We have no information on her at all."
Silas had no interest in Jasper Lockwood’s wife. He changed the subject. "Anything else? Has he sent anyone to look for Lynn Chester?"
"We haven’t heard anything yet," the subordinate replied.
"Keep a tighter watch on him," Silas ordered.
"Yes, sir."
"And one more thing. Not a word of my meeting with her today gets out."
"Understood, sir."
There were more than a few factions trying to get their hands on the Pharmacist, Lynn Chester. Silas’s insistence that Chloe join the Nocturne Group wasn’t just because he was taken with her and wanted to keep her by his side—it was also to protect her. After all, no one would dare to snatch a person claimed by the Nocturne Group.
....
After leaving the pharmacy, Chloe didn’t call the Lockwood family’s driver. Instead, she hailed a taxi. She had intended to go to the Medical College, but upon discovering that Silas’s men were following her, she immediately pulled out her phone to make a call.
"Silas!"
The man on the other end chuckled. "What is it? Having regrets now? Have you decided you want to have dinner with me after all?"
"Call your men off. And stop tracking me."
"I’m having them protect you discreetly."
"I don’t want it."
Silas gritted his teeth. "Can’t you say anything to me besides ’no’!?"
Chloe said, "Silas, I don’t like this."
After a moment of silence, Silas’s voice turned grave. "Lynn, you don’t have a choice this time. You know perfectly well how many people are eyeing you like prey. No one can protect you but me."
Deciding further argument was pointless, Chloe hung up. She had the taxi drop her off near the business district and headed straight into a shopping mall.
Once inside the mall, Chloe dialed another number. "Silas’s men are on my tail. Help me shake them."
A surprised woman’s voice came over the phone. "What?! Silas’s men are on your tail? He has found you?"
Chloe replied nonchalantly, "Yep. Looks like his hackers are pretty good."
"Where did he find you?" the woman asked.
Chloe answered, "An apothecary. He was monitoring every single one in Crestfall."
The woman cursed, "Damn it! That was careless of me. Just wait. I’ll take care of them right now, and I’ll teach them a lesson while I’m at it."
Chloe chuckled. "Just be careful. You don’t want to really piss Silas off."
The woman giggled. "I know."
Following the woman’s guidance, Chloe weaved through the mall and quickly shook off her pursuers, only to run into Esther Sterling and Cecilia Stone in an elevator.
Esther loved to shop and was constantly at the mall. Dressed head to toe in luxury brands, she was a stark contrast to Chloe, who wore not a single piece of jewelry.
Chloe disliked wearing jewelry. The walk-in closet Jasper had prepared for her contained an entire room just for gems and accessories, but she had never once stepped inside. She had only ever spared it a passing glance through the glass window, and spared it no thought.
Esther hadn’t expected to run into Chloe again, and she frowned instantly. But when she noted Chloe’s shabby appearance, with not even a single shopping bag in hand, her lips curled into a smirk, and her eyes filled with disdain and ridicule.
’So much for how Julian Xavier treats her!’
Cecilia looked quite haggard these days. Her gaze toward Chloe was filled with venomous hatred. ’If it weren’t for this bitch,’ she thought, ’the Stone Group would not have suffered such devastating losses? And I wouldn’t have been punished by my family and given the cold shoulder by my parents.’
Shooting a glare at Chloe, Cecilia said pointedly, "Esther, are you going to the Rivers Family’s banquet this weekend?"
At this, Esther grew smug, but she put on a false air of modesty. "Yes. I wasn’t originally planning on going, but Mom and Dad insisted that I should. They said I can’t just stay home practicing piano all the time. They said that I need to get out and make more friends."
"Your parents are right, of course you have to go! That’s a banquet hosted by the Rivers Family; not just anyone can get in! You’re so beautiful, maybe the Heir of the Rivers will fall for you at first sight! Then you’ll be the noble heiress of the Rivers Family! Some country bumpkin could never be a match against you."
There was no way the actual Heir of the Rivers would appear at a banquet thrown by a branch of the family. So Esther would not tell the truth but feigned shyness. "Oh well. It’s not that true."
Cecilia laughed. "Why not? It’s entirely possible. You’re your parents’ only daughter, and they dote on you so much. I’m sure they’ll plan everything out for you."
Esther smiled. "Mom and Dad do worry about me a lot."
Even though she was only going to a party for a branch of the Rivers Family, her ambitions certainly didn’t lie with them. They were merely a stepping stone. Her true target was the heir of the main line of the Rivers Family.’
Esther’s eyes lit up as she began to fantasize about becoming the matriarch of the Rivers Family, high and mighty, looking down on everyone else.
And Chloe Sterling would be destined to remain forever beneath her feet and get forced to look up in awe.
Cecilia was plotting. ’I have to make Chloe pay the price for crossing me!’
When she heard the conversation, Chloe felt like she was going to throw up. Thankfully, the elevator doors opened at that moment, and she immediately strode out.
Staring hatefully at Chloe’s departing back, Cecilia ground her teeth and said, "When the hell is that bitch going to get out of Crestfall? Doesn’t looking at her make your eyes hurt?"
’If Chloe were outside the Crestfall, it would be much easier to make a move on her.’
Esther bit her lip. "It should happen soon."
