On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 42: She Is Lynn Chester
Chloe Sterling glanced at Jasper Lockwood. "Let’s go."
"You get in the car first. I have a few words for him," Jasper Lockwood said, opening the car door and gesturing for her to get in.
Chloe Sterling said nothing more and got into the car.
After closing the door, Jasper Lockwood walked up to Silas Coldwell. The two men exchanged a few words.
Chloe Sterling watched them from inside the car but couldn’t hear their conversation. A moment later, Jasper Lockwood returned, while Silas Coldwell remained standing in the same spot, motionless.
The car door opened and Jasper Lockwood got in. Henry Chamberlain also got in the front, started the engine, and drove on.
The car was silent. No one spoke, and the atmosphere was delicate.
Behind them, Silas Coldwell remained standing in place, glaring murderously at the departing vehicle.
Seeing his expression, the few subordinates beside him didn’t dare make a peep.
After a long moment, Silas Coldwell finally spoke. "Investigate them! Find out when they got together and how! And what in the hell is their relationship now!"
One of his men felt the boss was too furious to think straight. ’Judging by how those two acted, what other relationship could it be?’
But they didn’t dare say that out loud.
After a moment’s hesitation, one of them ventured cautiously, "Boss, a while back, Jasper Lockwood suddenly got married in secret. No one knows who his wife is. Do you think... it could be Miss Chester?"
Silas Coldwell glanced at his subordinate, who was so frightened he immediately took a step back. But that wasn’t Silas’s intention; his expression was one of sudden realization.
’He really had been blinded by rage. He should have realized it sooner.’
’That bastard Jasper Lockwood actually used such a tactic to get his hands on Lynn Chester!’
’Shameless! Absolutely shameless!’
Silas Coldwell murmured, "You’re right. That must be it."
The man breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "So what’s our next move? Should we just grab Miss Chester and take her away?"
"You think she’s so easy to abduct? If it were that simple to keep her, I never would have given her the chance to leave Country E in the first place."
"What on earth did that Jasper Lockwood do to make Miss Chester marry him? Boss, you previously..." Realizing he’d misspoken, the man immediately shut his mouth.
Silas Coldwell fixed him with a murderous glare and asked coldly, "What about me ’previously’?"
The subordinate didn’t dare mention that Silas had tried so many methods before and she’d never agreed. Instead, he quickly changed the subject. "Were you too much of a gentleman back then? That Jasper Lockwood fellow must have used some despicable tactic!"
Silas Coldwell scoffed. "You think I need you to tell me that? Of course that bastard Lockwood used some despicable tactic!"
Another man whispered, "What kind of despicable tactic could it be?"
The man who had spoken before said, "How would a gentleman like our boss know something like that!"
Silas Coldwell’s face was livid. "Alright, cut the crap! Find out exactly what’s going on between those two. It’s also possible... they’re just putting on an act for my benefit."
"Yes, sir. I’ll send someone to investigate right away."
Back in the car, Jasper Lockwood remained silent. Chloe Sterling had no idea what he was thinking. ’Is he angry that I hid all this from him?’
’Does he think I married him just to use him as a shield against Silas Coldwell?’
After a long silence, Chloe Sterling was the first to speak. "Jasper, when we started, I thought this was just a transaction. That’s why I didn’t plan on showing you all my cards, especially the fact that I’m Lynn Chester."
She knew someone as perceptive as Jasper Lockwood must have already figured out she was Lynn Chester, so she decided to just admit it.
Jasper Lockwood’s piercing eyes turned to her. "You thought this was just a transaction? What kind of transaction?"
"I thought you married me for that old man’s two percent stake in the company. And that you chose me because I had no power or connections, which would make me easy to dismiss later on."
"So you’ve been thinking that all along."
"Not the whole time. Just at the beginning. After getting to know you better, I realized that wasn’t the reason."
"Then what about you?" Jasper Lockwood looked into her eyes and asked, "If you thought our marriage was a transaction in the beginning—that I was only in it for the shares—then what was your reason for marrying me? To use me to hide from Silas Coldwell?"
’So he really did think that.’
"No!" Chloe Sterling explained. "I never intended to use you! And I certainly don’t need to use you to hide from Silas Coldwell. If I really wanted to avoid him, I have plenty of ways to make sure he could never find me! As for agreeing to marry you... to be honest, I don’t even know what I was thinking. I just agreed instinctively."
"So you weren’t really trying to avoid Silas Coldwell. That’s why you had lunch with him today. You even warned him not to make any rash moves against me."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
’What is he even focusing on?!’
’Not the first part of what I said, not the last part, but the sentence right in the middle! All I was trying to do was emphasize that I’m not using him.’
"My point is that I’m not using you to hide from him. That’s what’s important."
Jasper Lockwood said, "Chloe, I don’t care if you’re using me. Even if you are, it doesn’t matter. I’m perfectly willing to be used by you. What I care about is that you’re being threatened and you won’t tell me. You knew perfectly well that Silas Coldwell came to Crestfall for you, yet you still went to see him alone."
"Because I can handle him, and he won’t do anything to me! I don’t want him disrupting my life right now. I promised Director Xavier I’d stay at The Medical College, but if you two clash, things will get complicated."
"We already have a history of bad blood. A confrontation between us is inevitable. Besides, our marriage will be made public sooner or later, so he’s bound to find out. Or... have you never considered making our relationship public? Have you never thought we could have a future together?"
Chloe Sterling pressed her lips together, silent. She really hadn’t thought about the future.
’No one can be certain what the future holds. Her life had been a cycle of gaining and losing, and she didn’t dare to make plans for the future anymore.’
The car descended into silence once again.
Henry Chamberlain drove, feeling a massive headache coming on. ’Master Jasper was already in a bad mood today; now he’s probably about to explode.’
’Of course, no matter how much he raged, he’d never do anything to Chloe Sterling. But the same couldn’t be said for the rest of them. Their own necks might be on the line.’
’He never would have imagined that Chloe Sterling knew Silas Coldwell, let alone that she was the famous top-level pharmacist, Lynn Chester. No wonder she’s so damn capable.’
’Master Jasper really hit the jackpot. It’s just... that personality of hers...’
Jasper Lockwood stared out the window, then suddenly said, "Henry, pull over up ahead."
Henry Chamberlain paused for a second, then asked in confusion, "Master Jasper, what is it?"
Chloe Sterling was equally puzzled. ’Is he getting out? Or is he going to kick me out?’
Jasper Lockwood’s dark eyes settled on her. "Didn’t you say you were hungry? That restaurant you like is just up ahead."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
’He actually remembered that? The truth was, she only said she was hungry because Henry Chamberlain mentioned Jasper hadn’t eaten all day. She just wanted to get him to eat something.’
Astonished, Henry Chamberlain slowly pulled the car over. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
Seeing Chloe Sterling’s complicated expression, Jasper Lockwood added, "Don’t look at me like that. We can settle our score... slowly... after we get home."
