One Night Stand With Alexander Blackwood-Chapter 29 — Twenty-nine
Serena’s POV
I waited the whole night for Alexander to return but as it neared midnight, the hope within slowly died.
It felt like I was just a pass time. I took a deep breath, freshened up and went to bed.
But before I slept, I received a message from someone — Liam.
Instantly, my face lit up with a smile as I read the text:
[Serena, I’d love for us to have coffee tomorrow. We have a lot to catch up on.]
I hastily typed a response. [Sure. Just text me the time and location.]
[Great! I’d send it tomorrow morning.]
I read the text and replied with a thumbs up emoji, before placing my phone aside. I never thought that I would reconnect with an old classmate.
Before I knew it, I drifted up to sleep.
The next day, I woke up feeling rejuvenated. And as I freshened up, the doorbell on my apartment rang.
"Strange." I muttered under my breath. "Since when did I have a doorbell?"
My mind instantly flashed to Alexander. He was the only one who could do such a thing. Instinctively, my lips curled up but I forced myself to kill the happiness.
I couldn’t let what happened between us happen again. I couldn’t be treated as a fool anymore.
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to the door and opened it when I saw who it was — Maya.
She instantly jumped on me when she walked in.
"Please tell me something happened between you and the boss last night."
I poked her forehead. "What’s going on in that dirty mind of yours?"
She blinked, taking my hand with a smile. "Rena, are you sure nothing happened between both of you? I swear I could feel the sexual attraction between both of you. How could nothing happen?"
She demanded, swinging my arm repeatedly. Yesterday, I woke up to several of her text messages, each one of them asking if I had something to do with Alexander.
I didn’t want to tell her the truth. Maya wouldn’t let me hear the end of it if she finds out I slept with Alexander — once again.
While I was lost in thoughts, I didn’t realise that Maya was reading my expression. I had momentarily forgotten that she was good with this.
"You slept with him, didn’t you?" Her question snapped me out of my thoughts as I stared at her wide-eyed.
"What?" I asked, my time unable to contain my surprise. Looking away, I said. "Why would... why would you have such thoughts?"
Maya leaned in and whispered into my ears. "You’re forgetting that I am good at reading expressions."
She paused, clearly enjoying my dissatisfied expression. "And not just that... you look like someone who’s been knocked up."
"Maya!" I yelled, embarrassed as my face turned red..
"I knew it." She exclaimed, clapping her hands excitedly before pulling me to have a seat. "Tell me, how did it feel? I’m sure you must have adjusted well. Tell me all the details."
With each word she uttered, my cheeks burned. "Maya..."
"Alright, alright. I won’t say anything anymore." But, she leaned in, whispering into my ears with a teasing voice. "You still need to tell me how it was."
I turned back away from her. Her teasing was getting out of hand.
a"Come on," she urged me, while pulling my hand.
"Fine," I said, exasperation evident in my tone. She blinked her eyes rapidly, and I gave in.
"We slept with each other." I paused, recalling the activity from the previous day. Maya giggled close to me and I sighed. "But when I woke up, he wasn’t beside me anymore."
Maya bit her lips as her eyes remained on me. "Are you okay?" She asked carefully.
A chuckle escaped from my lips. "Why wouldn’t I be? We have no relationship with each other. At most, it’s a boss-employee relationship."
My heart twisted with my words, but I took a deep breath. Alexander and I were not from the same world. Perhaps... he was momentarily attracted to me.
Maya held my hand, and patted it without saying anything.
"Anyways, Liam texted me. He wanted to meet up for coffee." I informed her, changing the topic from Alexander into something light-hearted.
Maya’s expression dropped at the mention of Liam, and my eyes narrowed.
"Do you still doubt him? He seems genuine." The question slipped out of me before I could stop it.
Maya exhaled, and stared into my eyes seriously. "Rena, there are a lot of things you don’t know. It’d be wise if you stayed away from him."
I fell into deep thought. Maya never said such words. This meant she was serious.
"What do you know?"
She genuinely looked like she wanted to let me know what was going on, but it felt like she was afraid of how I’d react. But I was curious.
Why didn’t she like Liam?
What was between them?
Who exactly was Liam?
"Don’t worry about it. If you do as I say, then you’ll be safe." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"But I can’t cancel it. I have already agreed to it." I reminded her.
She held her chin for a while before her face brightened. "Then I can go with you! That way, you’ll still be protected."
I nodded, agreeing to her.
-------------------------
When Maya and I arrived at work, we were stopped by Ethan and Jessica.
My mood turned sour on seeing them. Maya looked like she was about to get into a fight.
"Ethan, look. Isn’t that your ex-girlfriend?" Jessica pointed at him, causing me to stop in my tracks. "Turns out she wasn’t as pure as she claimed to be."
"You are right babe." Ethan snickered. "Good thing I dumped her before she made me a cuckold."
Maya rolled her eyes, and was about to speak but I held her back.
"But..."
Jessica blocked our way, chin lifted like she owned the entire floor.
"What? Do you think you can be disrespectful because the boss’s grandfather spoke up for you yesterday?"
Maya’s jaw twitched. She was about to explode.
I tugged her hand gently. "Ignore her." Then I whispered. "She’s not worth it."
Jessica let out a loud scoff. "Of course you want to walk away. Trash never argues — it just hides."
Maya froze.
Slowly... very slowly... she turned back to face Jessica.
"Oh?" Maya smiled sweetly — dangerously sweet. "I wasn’t going to say anything."
Then she stepped closer, lowering her voice. "But you just called my best friend trash. So now I have to say something."
Jessica’s confident façade wavered. I knew she was always afraid of Maya’s tongue.
Maya tilted her head. "Tell me, Jessica... Who exactly do you think you are? Because the last time I checked, you’re just an employee whose biggest achievement is dating a man—"
She nodded at Ethan.
"—who still can’t spell ’receipt’ without autocorrect."
Ethan’s mouth dropped. "Huh?!"
Jessica’s face flushed bright red. "Maya—"
"Oh no, don’t Maya me." Maya held up a finger. "If you dish rubbish, be ready to eat it too."
Jessica stepped back, anger swirling in her eyes, but she clearly wasn’t prepared for Maya’s strike.
I took a step forward, keeping my tone calm, steady, and painfully polite.
"Jessica," I started, meeting her gaze. "If you want to insult me, go ahead. But at least do it without blocking the hallway. Some of us actually came here to work today."
The employees nearby snickered quietly.
Maya added, "Move. Before you embarrass yourself more."
Jessica opened her mouth... but nothing came out. She realized eyes were on her, being watched and judged.
Finally, she clenched her jaw and stepped aside, face burning undisguised fury.
Maya flicked her hair dramatically as she passed. "Good girl."
I bit back a smile and walked with her.
Behind us, Jessica hissed at Ethan, "Why didn’t you defend me?!"
Ethan muttered, scratching his head. "I—I didn’t want Maya to roast me again."
