"So, what can I help you with?"

Aside from just her flustered mental state, Gene just didn't look okay as a whole. The immense stress and pressure she was under before showed, and so did the proof of her suffering.

"Are you in trouble? Is someone chasing you?"

Although the person speaking in front of her didn't look too good either, Gene could tell that the so-called helpful girl really cared.

However, as if her tongue was tied, Gene didn't speak a word. Ever since she followed the girl inside, she just kept staring at her like she was some sort of mythical being.

'Crazy.'

First Cassian, and then this? Normally, seeing just one of these guys counted as a major event, but now she was seeing the one true Hero herself? What's more, wasn't Cassian the one who brought her here?

'It's certainly her.'

Although the tied-up chestnut hair looked different from its usual blonde color, and her face looked a bit different, Gene was sure of one thing. She had somehow ended up in Aurora Dawnbringer's home!

If it was anyone else, these small but recurring differences would have made it hard for them to put the two together. At most, the girl would pass for Aurora's lookalike.

But once again, the 'focused' Gene wasn't someone who could be easily fooled by an extra pair of glasses.

'How does he know where she lives?'

It was obvious from the different look that Aurora didn't exactly announce her address to the world. In fact, most of the shows that Gene saw in the orphanage reiterated the fact that Aurora's past was a mystery.

It was obvious to Gene that Aurora separated her personal and public life, but it wasn't a coincidence that Cassian sent her here.

He had even gone as far as to explain that Aurora was the cause for the strangely elevated vibe. Moreover, the rest of his instructions made more sense now that Gene knew the person in front of her.

"Hello?"

Seeing Gene frozen in shock like this, Aurora sounded even more worried about Gene. It didn't help that the voices in her head were acting up once again.

Strangely enough, the foreign thoughts were also in shock. Usually, once they reacted, they gave vague yet direct emotional hints, but now, all they presented was perplexion!

"You need to get checked up. Wait here, I will call an ambulance."

Gene's behavior could be interpreted in many ways, but the thoughts' intrusion always meant that something definitely wasn't right.

Aurora wanted to find out what it was, but she was more worried about the little girl who was caught up in all this.

"No, wait!"

However, just as she was about to stand up and leave, Gene instinctively grabbed her hand. Although she wasn't sure if this would actually work, she had to follow Cassian's plan to the t.

Otherwise, she could only blame herself for messing everything up.

"Sorry. I… I was told to give you this."

Hurriedly taking back her hand, Gene took out the file that she was hiding under her arm. Being in a real-life conversation with Aurora really made her believe that this was her ticket to someplace better.

'Maybe he did know what he was saying.'

From being saved by the most wanted Villain to paying the most righteous Hero a visit… Gene's whole encounter sounded more like something of a fairy tale.

Yet, the fact that all of it had happened meant that everything was really possible.

"Told? By-"

Aurora wanted to question the person behind this instruction, but her eyes were immediately attracted to the words gleaming out of the transparent file.

{ How I Cracked A Strange Kidnapping Case }

It looked like a cheesy book title, but associating this title with the girl sitting in front of her, Aurora didn't even have to jump to conclusions to imagine what this was about.

Putting the unimportant information aside, Aurora took the neat stack of paper out of the file and started reading it attentively.

'Hm?'

A first glance at the content made it look like an obscure novel written in first person. However, reading along, the more Aurora read the more her face scrunched up.

This wasn't made up, amid the sea of words, there were proper Police Force Case Codes, as well as a real messing poster. Moreover, the addresses mentioned in the novel were real locations.

Raising her face to look at the girl in front of her once more, Aurora raised her glasses and stared deeply into the girl's eyes while simultaneously checking the paper in her hands.

{Hesitant whether to follow my instructions or not, Gene took a deep breath before finally ringing the doorbell.}

"Gene?"

{"Yes?"}

"Yes?"

{In response to Gene's last attempt at seeking help, a beautiful but weary girl came out of the door. She didn't look like much, but who knew? Depending on her choices, she could very well be the true Hero of the story.}

Reaching the end of the page, Aurora raised the paper to continue reading, but the story had just come to an abrupt end.

{ Written By: Shadow Friend }

There was just one more page carrying a single-line credit, as well as a note written in very small words.

{ PS: I hope you are doing better, weary girl. }

The whole thing seemed like an elaborate prank, but Aurora's heart beat faster and faster.

The Main Character, the detective, said a lot of things and explained every single part of it. However, when it came to the one thing Aurora wanted to know the most, his identity, he never mentioned it once!

'Ah.'

Putting aside the disorientation she was suffering from, Aurora looked at Gene with both doubt and empathy. She wanted to ask her a lot of things but also felt saddened for her.

That being said, before she did anything, Aurora at least wanted to confirm that she wasn't being fooled.

"Give me a second."

Raising her index finger for Gene, Aurora picked up the landline and clicked the speed dial.

Ring…. Ring…

{Hello?}

Just a few seconds later, a middle-aged man's voice could be heard through the speaker.

"Uncle… Ah, yes, good to hear from you too. It's just that I'm in a bit of a hurry, so can you just run a Case Code for me real quick?"

Ascertaining the authenticity of this whole story was as easy as could be.
