Only I Am A Reader-Chapter 596: The Entertained Pupil
While Yvonne was busy handling her mental breakdown, Kara didn’t waste time as she started working on the solution to their advancement problem.
First off, aside from the broken wall, she went around inspecting the other three.
To the naked eye, it appeared as if she was just probing around for a movable stone to press, but in reality...
’It’s nothing compared to Master’s Shadow Control, but even when degraded, it’s still too useful.’
While the Thorn Trio thought she possessed a broken barrier Ability, what Kara displayed thus far was merely a branch Ability that she obtained from ’learning’ Leo’s Shadow Domination.
And just relying on that, she secretly made her starry shadows seep into the walls as if they were some form of absorbable liquid, using it to any secret that might be hidden under the monotone stone surface.
"Oh, figured it out."
With just a single deep scan through all three walls, Kara stopped in front of the wall on the left.
"What?"
Yvonne openly questioned Kara’s proclamation. She hasn’t even conjured any of her signature barrier! What could she have possibly figured out?
With a confident smile on her face, Kara didn’t bother replying before gesturing with her index finger as if taunting the wall, and the result was...
Click!
Signalled by a very loud click at the start, the sound of a clockwork mechanism echoed as an instantaneous chain reaction took place.
Starting with the fall of one stone at the center, the entire middle section of the wall crumbled down in order, revealing the usual straight corridor that they tread before Yvonne’s impulsive act of destruction.
’As expected of Master!’
Rather than awaiting her team’s praise, Kara took the initiative to praise Cassian deep inside.
If not for her Master, would she have been able to solve their problem this quickly?
Whether it was a conscious or an unconscious act, it seemed like Kara selectively forgot that it was Leo’s orders that led her to this strange Gate.
"How...?"
Despite reaching the same end result of obstacle destruction as she did, the Labyrinth’s reaction wasn’t the same.
Somehow, Kara had really found a valid path for advancement, and Yvonne couldn’t wrap her mind around her means of doing so.
"It was just a small trick. No need to bore you with an explanation."
In reality, what Kara did was actually not much different from what Yvonne did with the traps.
She had simply discovered a trigger in the middle of her initial inspection. A small stone that could be pressed forward to start a hidden mechanism.
After inspecting the reminder to confirm that what she found was the only anomaly around, Kara chose to trigger it.
However, instead of just pressing it out in the open, she just moved the internal part that would have affected by the stone’s pressure.
The culmination of these few consecutive actions made it seem like Kara had pulled off a great magic trick.
Opening an unseeming wall with a single touch!
"I hope this wasn’t too slow for you."
It was just that Yvonne couldn’t possibly grasp that her feat could be replicated this easily.
As a result, this only added to the terrifying myth of Star Pupils in Yvonne’s head.
"Well done, Star."
Receiving praise from Aurora, Kara simply nodded with a smile.
The awkward her was nowhere to be seen. Just as she had displayed so far, only being in the presence of her Master could she be that flustered.
Everyone else was simply too inferior in comparison, so she could easily face them with confidence.
The Thorn Trio weren’t worth mentioning. As for Aurora...
’She is definitely something.’
Although on a level of her own, that barely qual qualified her to be considered close to her Master’s level.
It didn’t seem like it, but that was the highest level of praise Kara could give!
While she couldn’t possibly grasp her Master’s infinite wisdom, Kara felt like she could somewhat understand why he gave Aurora so much attention.
’I’m a little jealous.’
Wouldn’t her life finally have a meaning if her Master viewed her in the same light?
Kara glanced at Aurora with hidden displeasure, but in the end, she still came to her senses.
’I’m the one who Master turned to when he needed help.’
What was the point of being valued by someone if that cost you the privilege of being close to them?
No matter what, Kara was very satisfied with the fact that the Lord of Shadows had already scheduled a meeting to report the happenings of each Gate they entered.
The gift of periodic meetings with her Master was something that Kara could only wish to have but not ask for, and through Aurora’s existence, she had received that special honour!
In fact, aside from the occasional momentary bursts of jealousy, Kara was rather grateful to Aurora.
After all, if not to prepare to confidently dominate any threat during this Gate Clearing Project, Kara wouldn’t have gotten the chance to spend some quality training time, being personally taught by Cassian!
Like an actual pupil!
How else would she have gotten this good at Shadow Control, otherwise?
’Besides, it’s a little fun.’
Even the act of clearing the Gate itself was pretty amusing.
Watching the so-called Thorn Queen perform the tricks that she thought were cleverly hidden and foiling them at the last moment was quite entertaining.
If she had wanted to, Kara could have intervened and caught her red-handed from the start, but Cassian had instructed her otherwise.
That being said, even if she had the freedom to make her own choice, Kara would have still done the same.
Making the Thorn Queen question reality as her mentality continuously deteriorated left a good taste in her mouth.
"Shall we?"
Reinforcing the smile on her face, Kara stepped through the broken wall, ready to quickly finish her first assignment.
With her spirit feeling fulfilled, Kara couldn’t help but internally praise her great master one more time.
Truly, rather than a bothersome chore, only a task assigned by him could feel like a refreshing piece of entertainment.
