Otherworldly Affairs Office-Chapter 79: Secrets of the Secret Prison
Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Secrets of the Secret Prison
As the two of them were talking, the door of the car was opened again, and Shangxing and Wenlin got in. Hu Wenjun stood at the car door and said to Pei Yan inside, "Head back to headquarters first. We’ll unlock your arm power there so Elder Lin can give you a thorough check-up."
Pei Yan stood up and said, "But Captain Hu, what about your family? It seems impolite for me to just leave like this."
"Don’t worry about it, I’ll explain it to my family later. Just wait for me at headquarters. After I finish handling family matters tomorrow, I’ll be back," Hu Wenjun said, patting the car to reassure him.
Wenlin rolled his eyes and boomed, "Forget about going to headquarters! They don’t need you there right now. Just stay home and spend the New Year’s holiday with your wife and daughter until the fifth day. That’s also Director Gu’s suggestion; rest assured that the security issue is being handled by the bureau."
"Director Gu is probably afraid I’ll give him a piece of my mind!" Hu Wenjun grumbled, taking out a cigarette, which he threw into his mouth with a displeased humph. frёeωebɳovel.com
Wenlin scratched his head awkwardly and said, "Tsk, Director Gu said you’d understand."
"Understand my ass! Wait here a minute!" With that, he slammed the car door shut and went back inside. Less than ten minutes later, Hu Wenjun returned carrying two perfectly sealed food containers, which he placed in Pei Yan’s and Jiang Feiyang’s hands as he opened the car door, saying, "That’s it, let’s go!" He closed the car door and patted the vehicle again, signaling Wenlin to drive off.
The car slowly followed the convoy out of the alley. Pei Yan kept waving at Hu Wenjun, who was staring at them from the gate until they exited the village. Only then did Jiang Feiyang open one of the containers, exclaiming, "Wow, dumplings! I knew it would be dumplings. Captain Hu certainly knows how to take care of his own." Without hesitation, he grabbed one with his hands and stuffed it into his mouth, chewing enthusiastically. "Hmm, delicious! Three-flavor filling! These shrimp are authentic!"
Pei Yan opened his own container to find it brimming with dumplings shaped like little ingots. He handed the container to Shangxing sitting in the front passenger seat, then took one from Jiang Feiyang’s container and took a bite. "Delicious!"
Shangxing placed the container on the dashboard, and both he and Wenlin, who was driving, each grabbed a dumpling. The whole car silently watched the scenery outside as they ate their dumplings.
After a long silence, Shangxing wiped his greasy hands, glanced at his watch, adjusted his mood, and said with a smile, "Happy New Year, everyone!"
Hearing this, Pei Yan took out his phone and saw it was past midnight. He couldn’t help but smile, put his hands together in a salute, and said to everyone in the car, "Happy New Year!"
"Happy New Year!"
"Happy New Year!"
In the exchange of greetings, Pei Yan stepped into the new year. Perhaps this world no longer allowed him to remain naive; he needed to grow more quickly. On this New Year’s day, while others were receiving blessings and red envelopes, he had killed someone and witnessed the dark side of the world.
Thinking of this, Pei Yan turned to look out of the car window. He noticed that the car carrying the black-suited individuals in charge of prisoner transport, which had been traveling with them, parted ways with their three cars after entering the county. They joined a convoy of more than ten various police cars waiting at the county entrance and continued down the main road.
"Aren’t they traveling with us using the Teleportation Array?" Pei Yan asked in confusion, pointing outside.
Wenlin, driving, replied without turning his head, "They’re different from us. They need to go to the nearest city, meet up with the police there to confirm the identities of the individuals they’ve caught today, file them, and then take them away. You should know that most of these people are involved in murder cases. Now that they’ve been captured, many unsolved cases finally have a lead."
"Oh, there was a girl among them claiming she’s committed every kind of crime. I wonder if she’s telling the truth!" Pei Yan remarked, looking back out the window with a sigh.
Jiang Feiyang, meanwhile, popped the last dumpling from his container into his mouth, closed the empty box, and mumbled, "You believe in what the Divine Desire People say? Even if that woman is telling the truth and she hasn’t really done anything, she’ll be skinned alive in there. Don’t expect her to be released until she’s been thoroughly interrogated and examined for three or four months. I’m telling you, any superpowered criminal will certainly be convicted and once they’re in that place, they say goodbye to human rights."
"Is it that serious?" Pei Yan asked, stunned.
"You think—" Jiang Feiyang began.
"Feiyang!"
Jiang Feiyang was interrupted by Wenlin’s loud reprimand from the driver’s seat, causing Jiang Feiyang to lean back in his seat with a look of defiance. "Captain Wen, is this really necessary? Pei Yan is one of us. He’ll learn about this sooner or later, so why hide it? Are we going to let the Divine Desire People be the ones to break it to him?"
Wenlin glared at Jiang Feiyang through the rearview mirror, then glanced at Shangxing sitting beside him, who nodded in agreement. Wenlin could only shake his head, irritated but resigned. "So your wings have gotten stronger and you’re talking back now, huh? Fine, go ahead, since he’s from your team, it’s not my place!"
When Wenlin finished speaking, Jiang Feiyang closed his eyes and slumped quietly in his seat, saying nothing further. Sitting in the front row, Shangxing chimed in, "There’s nothing much to conceal. Research on abilities has always been ongoing. People like us have existed since ancient times, but before the 19th century, such internally awakened individuals were extremely rare. However, moving into the 20th century, their numbers skyrocketed, and with the liberation in the 1940s and 50s, it was as though we entered an explosive phase."
"That’s the main reason our Investigation Bureau was established. Yet, no one understands why this phenomenon has occurred, or whether it’s good or bad. Not just us, but governments worldwide are conducting research from every angle. But, the nation remains the nation, upholding its principles. They won’t forcibly research non-criminals with abilities. But once you commit a serious or capital crime, you’ve lost everything and can expect a life in prison worse than death." Shangxing spoke, a faint smile of relief appearing on his face.
Just then, the car stopped on a street not far from the Teleportation Array. Wenlin patted the steering wheel and said, "That’s enough talk. We’re here. Get out!"
Snapping out of Shangxing’s words, Pei Yan exhaled deeply, straightening his clothes as he opened the car door and got out, muttering quietly as he looked into the distance, "I hope what you said is true, or else you’ll be sliced up for sure."
Wenlin and the bureau staff with him handed the car keys to the police officer on duty at the location, instructed him that this was a stolen car and someone would claim it later, and then led the group toward the secret location engraved with the Teleportation Array.
Ten minutes later, Pei Yan reappeared, rubbing his still slightly aching head from the aftereffects, and stared bewildered at the bustling crowd of strangers in front of him.
