Overpowered Resident Doctor-Chapter 64: Just Here for a Sick Leave Note
"Mr. Yan, hello, I’m Yao Yiyi!"
"Hello."
Yan Feifan replied flatly, taking the registration slip and medical file from the beautiful woman with long, wine-red hair, almond-shaped eyes, and a wide mouth.
He opened the medical file, ready to scrawl some indecipherable doctor’s script that no one could possibly read, when he heard Yao Yiyi’s voice again.
"I heard from my best friend a long time ago that Mrs. Yan has an incredibly handsome and talented younger brother."
"Seeing you today, I can tell your reputation is well-deserved."
Although Yan Feifan resented this "good deed" his sister had forced upon him, he couldn’t help but feel a little pleased by the compliment.
He put down his pen and said, "Since you’ve already registered, I might as well give you a basic physical examination."
"Then I’ll have to trouble you, Mr. Yan," Yao Yiyi said happily.
Yan Feifan picked up his stethoscope and began to listen to Yao Yiyi’s heartbeat...
"My boyfriend got lucky and won a trip for two to Thailand. But because of how busy we are at my company, it’s really hard to get personal leave, so I had to resort to this."
Yao Yiyi explained, then sized up Yan Feifan as he began to listen to her bowel sounds. "Mr. Yan," she asked, "do you have a girlfriend?"
"I have a few other pretty friends who are still single, you know."
"You’re so handsome, and you’re a doctor at the Affiliated Hospital..."
Yan Feifan took off his stethoscope and replied perfunctorily, "I’m still a resident physician. I’m busy every day, so I don’t have time for a girlfriend."
Yao Yiyi let out a soft "Oh," her voice filled with sympathy. "I’ve heard about that. Interns and residents work such long hours they never see the sun, and you don’t even get days off..."
"Open your mouth and stick out your tongue..."
Yao Yiyi obediently opened her wide mouth and did her best to stick out her tongue...
A moment later, when she saw Yan Feifan’s pen start to fly across the medical file, she retracted her tongue.
"Mr. Yan, about this illness... it would be best if it’s something acute and somewhat serious, but the kind you can recover from in a few days and be back at one hundred percent, with no lingering effects..."
"Also, also..."
Yao Yiyi added emphatically, "Mr. Yan, I have commercial health insurance. This can’t affect any potential medical claims I might make in the future."
"I once read about an insurance dispute where someone used their own health insurance card to buy medication for someone else for a certain illness."
"Later, when they filed a claim, the insurance company used that prescription record to deny the claim, saying the policyholder had concealed their condition and taken out the policy with a pre-existing illness."
Yan Feifan reached for a sick note slip he had gotten from another doctor earlier. As he started writing, he said, "All the issues you mentioned, I’ve taken them into..."
He stopped mid-sentence, his pen freezing as well.
Just now, out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw a slight twitch at the corner of Yao Yiyi’s left eye and left mouth.
To confirm he wasn’t hallucinating or that his eyes hadn’t played tricks on him, Yan Feifan calmed his mind and began to replay the memory.
In his mind’s eye, like a film rewinding, the scene he had caught in his peripheral vision replayed itself.
This time, Yan Feifan "saw" it with perfect clarity.
It wasn’t just the corner of Yao Yiyi’s left eye and mouth; the muscles in her left cheek had also twitched slightly at the same time!
"Yao Yiyi, do you have a history of epilepsy?"
"Epilepsy? No."
Yao Yiyi asked, confused, "Mr. Yan, why are you suddenly asking about that?"
Yan Feifan didn’t answer. He checked Yao Yiyi’s eyes, then shone a small penlight into them.
"Have you recently experienced any symptoms like dizziness, headaches, sudden blurred vision, or tinnitus?"
Yao Yiyi quickly shook her head. "No, nothing like that. I’ve always been in great health."
Seeing his serious expression, she asked worriedly, "Mr. Yan, did you find something?"
Yan Feifan stood up and said, "Yao Yiyi, I want you to copy a movement for me."
Yan Feifan’s movement was very simple. He just extended both arms out in front of him, keeping his hands, arms, and shoulders in a straight line.
Yao Yiyi copied him.
But within a few seconds, Yan Feifan noticed that her left arm had drifted significantly downward, no longer in a straight line with her shoulder and right arm.
Seeing this, Yan Feifan was almost certain.
When there is a problem with the brain, there are usually warning signs and subtle external symptoms.
For example, sudden numbness or weakness in the limbs, sudden blurred vision, or occasional dizzy spells all warrant increased vigilance.
There are several simple self-tests to determine if there might be a problem with your brain.
You can hold your arms straight out in a line.
If one arm drifts down within ten seconds without you noticing, it could mean your brain’s control over one side of your body is impaired.
You can also try reciting a tongue twister.
If you can’t say it as you normally would, it could mean your brain’s control over your speech center is impaired.
You can also smile in front of a mirror.
If you notice that the smile on one half of your face looks unnatural, it could be a sign of facial paralysis.
If any of these three simple tests show a positive result, it’s best to go to the hospital for a detailed examination.
Considering Yao Yiyi’s age and physical condition, Yan Feifan felt the possibility of a stroke was relatively low.
’Could it be pressure from a brain tumor?’
Yan Feifan wrote out an order for a test and handed it to Yao Yiyi.
"Yao Yiyi, I’m just a little suspicious right now. I need you to go get a cranial CT scan first."
Yao Yiyi took the test order, saying nervously, "Mr. Yan, I just came here to get a sick note."
"Why are you sending me for a CT scan?"
"Of my head, no less?"
Yan Feifan tried to reassure her, "It’s quick. It’s just on the second floor, and you’ll have the results in half an hour at most."
After saying this, Yan Feifan called over Shen Ru, the nurse who had been assisting him recently, and had her take Yao Yiyi to get the CT scan...
The CT results came back even faster than Yan Feifan had expected.
He looked at the CT scan images on the tablet, then said to the anxious-looking Yao Yiyi sitting before him, "Um, Yao Yiyi..."
"You’re probably going to need to take a longer sick leave."
Yan Feifan gestured to the area on his head above his right ear and explained, "In this area of your brain, we’ve found a tumor about two by three centimeters in size..."
Seeing the color drain from Yao Yiyi’s face, Yan Feifan tried to comfort her, "Judging from the CT images, its borders are quite regular. It’s very likely a meningioma."
"This type of tumor is mostly benign. They usually grow slowly, and the disease course is long—typically two to four years, but seven or eight, or even over a decade, is not uncommon."
"As long as it’s surgically removed..."
At this, Yan Feifan noticed that Yao Yiyi had gone limp in her chair, murmuring, "I just came for a sick note... how do I have a brain tumor?"
"I just wanted a sick note..."
"Yao Yiyi..."
Yan Feifan raised his voice, interrupting her. "You need to be transferred to the neurosurgery department for further examination and confirmation."
"Um, what about your family?"
Yao Yiyi came to her senses. "Family... Mom and Dad..."
She took out her phone and frantically dialed a number.
As soon as the call connected, Yao Yiyi’s lip trembled, and she burst into loud sobs.
"Dad, I have a brain tumor!" she wailed.
"Dad, I’m going to die!"
