Chapter 143: Chapter 143: The Lucky Farmer Remains Calm, The Heirless Husband Hurries to Chase His Wife 3
Soon!
Through her spreading the word, the entire village came to know that Su Zhiruan had a childhood friend, someone they had never met, named Brother Erniu who had returned and was staying at her house. They had even exchanged tokens of love when they were kids.
Many young men in the village, who had secretly admired Su Zhiruan, felt like frosted eggplants upon hearing the news—deflated and disappointed.
After completing all this, Su Zhiruan leisurely returned to her home.
By this time, dusk was approaching, the sky gradually darkened, and the villagers who had been farming all began to pack up their tools to head home.
Su Zhiruan walked around her small courtyard and thought it quite nice—she could use it to grow some slightly expensive medicinal herbs. By planting them herself, she wouldn’t need to venture up the back mountain to collect herbs laboriously anymore.
...
The courtyard was large, but the rooms weren’t many—apart from a kitchen and a bedroom, there was an empty cowshed. The cowshed, free of any cattle, stored some long-unused farm tools, and most of the remaining open space was used by the previous owner to dry medicinal herbs.
Su Zhiruan found a hoe in the cowshed, prepared to till the idle wasteland in the yard. She took out her tools, rolled up her pants, and got ready to start.
Just then, she saw a figure standing at the door of the bedroom—it was Huaichu.
“What are you doing?” the young man asked as he walked over. Thinking it over, he felt his tone might not match the gentle persona of Brother Erniu she had described—it seemed too harsh. So, he added, “Ruanruan, what are you doing?”
“I’m hoeing the land, planning to plant some herbs on half and vegetables on the other half, so we can eat them too,” Su Zhiruan quickly slipped into her role. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she smiled and continued her labor. Suddenly remembering something, she dropped the hoe, approached Huaichu, and pushed him lightly, “Brother Erniu, your wounds haven’t healed yet, why are you outside? Go back, go back. You need to rest in bed and shouldn’t walk around in the fields.”
Huaichu didn’t move, despite Su Zhiruan’s pushing. She looked up at him questioningly and continued, “Don’t worry, once I finish hoeing, I’ll cook. Just bear with it a little longer.”
“I’m not hungry,” Huaichu stated, watching the young girl attempting to push him back. Curiosity arose in him. Instead of returning to his room, he chose to sit on a chair where the herbs were drying. “I’ll sit here and watch you.”
Watching him slowly move to the chair, still looking in her direction, Su Zhiruan nodded, “Alright, but Brother Erniu, you really shouldn’t walk around lest your wounds tear. Just sit and watch.”
“Okay,” Huaichu nodded slightly.
In the gradually darkening dusk, he seemed somewhat docile.
Su Zhiruan almost laughed at this thought. This man was the Crown Prince of the entire Wang Dynasty, decisive and ruthless in his actions, cold-hearted, indifferent to human life, and distant from women—holding absolute power over the dynasty.
If not for his severe injuries, he certainly wouldn’t be sitting here docilely watching her farm.
Reflecting on this, Su Zhiruan continued to till the wasteland, her sweat pouring down.

“Ruanruan,” Huaichu called her nickname again, sounding much more natural this time.
Looking up, Su Zhiruan saw him leaning his cheek on his hand, thoughtfully watching her. When she looked his way, his expression swiftly changed to confusion.
He asked, “You said we were childhood sweethearts—what were we like before? How old were we when we separated? I’ve forgotten, I just want to hear you tell it, to see if I can remember.”
Su Zhiruan nodded briskly, swinging the hoe as she brought out the story she had prepared beforehand.
“Brother Erniu, we met at a clinic. We were both very young then, only about three or four years old,” Su Zhiruan watched him sitting obediently, listening intently, and continued, “After we met, you even stayed in the Su Family Village for a while. Back then I told you I was an orphan with no parents, and you said you would keep me company for life. We exchanged tokens of affection and vowed that if we were both single when we grew up, we would marry each other.”
Having finished, Su Zhiruan even laughed a little, thankful that the darkness now hid her brief smile.
Sitting in the darkness, Huaichu was deep in thought.
Su Zhiruan finished her tasks quickly and then dropped her hoe to enter the kitchen, moving not swiftly, but methodically as she began to cook.
Having just arrived in this world today, she had already done so much and felt somewhat tired, which made her yawn.
Fu Huaichu appeared at the kitchen doorway without her knowing when he had come, he looked at her, “Is there anything I can do?”
“No need, no need, Brother Erniu, I know you want to help me cook, but you’re injured, go back and lie down, I’ll bring you the food once it’s ready,” Su Zhiruan said as she quickly cooked porridge. She patted the dust off her hands, turned around with a slight smile, “Brother Erniu, weren’t you heavily injured in the arm this morning, unable to lift a spoon—how now can you help me?”
Fu Huaichu: “…I’m going back first.”
“Alright, alright, go back now, the meal will be ready soon.” Su Zhiruan quickly chopped vegetables, preparing to stir-fry another dish.
The bedroom wasn’t large, but it contained two beds, one of which Fu Huaichu used. Su Zhiruan decided to put the other bed behind a curtain and pulled out the bedding.
After she made the bed, she went back to the kitchen to check on the meal— the green vegetable and meat porridge was nearly ready. She served it, and like at noon, spoon-fed Fu Huaichu.
Afterwards, Su Zhiruan cleaned up the dishes and went back into the room.
The two of them didn’t talk much anymore. Separated by a curtain, they could only hear each other’s breathing.
Su Zhiruan was so tired that she fell asleep.
A night full of good dreams.

The following days, about a fortnight, passed by just as quietly.
If there were any changes, Su Zhiruan could clearly feel that Fu Huaichu’s wary gaze towards her was getting softer.
From the initial deep suspicion to now, he could trust the meals she cooked and the medicine she applied, and could even help her look after the herbs.
His injuries were healing little by little.
Until one day, Su Zhiruan went to see patients outside the village, and Fu Huaichu also wanted to explore the Su Family village, so he went out with her.
They had just walked a few steps when someone called out to him.
“Erniu? You’re Erniu, right? Oh, this lad, you’ve grown so handsome after all these years.” Uncle Sanyou saw Su Zhiruan and, guessing the man alongside her was the Cousin Erniu she had mentioned, walked over beamingly and loudly said to them, “I heard from Ruanruan that you’re here to find her? Don’t forget about us cousins when it’s time for the wedding feast!”
When people working in the fields heard that Su Zhiruan’s Cousin Erniu had come with her, they gathered around too.
“We know, we know, Ruanruan’s childhood sweetheart, are we about to have a wedding feast soon?”
“Marry early, have children, the most important thing is for your family to live well.”
…
“Uncles, please stop joking, we have to go and see patients, so we’re heading out now.” Su Zhiruan laughed and waved her hand, pulling Fu Huaichu away.
