Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 170 Different Wheels In Motion
Once Avery and his team had left Commander Traustur's office, the man took a deep breathe and called in his most trusted adjutant who had been waiting in a room next to his own.
Not but five seconds after his message, a human woman of small stature and unassuming features into the room.
"Captain Helstalia, I need you to deal with these matters discreetly." Traustur said, handing her over a data pad with a list of items to address.
Normally he would have simply sent her the list via transmission but considering that his official codes and seal had been stolen, he could not risk this order being intercepted by the enemy that had infiltrated his base.
"Understood sir, I'll get on this right away."
Helstalia was about to leave when Traustur gave her one last order. This one concerned a sensitive matter, and he did not want any record of it existing. There would be problems if Avery or any of his companions found out about it.
"Are you sure sir? If they learn about this, it might jeopardize our already strained relationship with them." Captain Helstalia said hesitantly.
"The consequences will be worse if we make an enemy of the most powerful person on the planet. If she learns that her daughter has returned and we hid her arrival, it could spell disaster. We already have far too much to deal with as it is. With the upcoming trail and the compromised security of this base. Having Azade's most prominent politician coming after us as well… I don't even want to think about it."
"But sir, don't we have an obligation to uphold her privacy? She did use to be among our ranks."
"Normally I would agree with you. Still, the circumstances being what they are, certain principles must be bent. She is no longer apart of the Alliance Police, so our obligation to hide her is not in effect anymore. So, I need you to see this done as discreetly as possible. If everything goes smoothly, they will be none the wiser, and we'll gain the appreciation of a powerful ally." Commander Berk said, bringing an end to the discussion.
The loyal subordinate that she was, Captain Helstalia saluted her superior and immediately began working on the tasks assigned to her once she left the room. Even if she did not agree with one of them.
…
Sitting in the Dauntless' cockpit, Avery, Kasandra, and Jasmine were hard at work looking for the best place in the system for Avery to get physical augmentations.
They had already decided that price was no issue. Right now, they were flush with money after several successful jobs in the Phregon system, and from scamming Iniquus out of eighty million Krenin.
"Now that I think about it, what about you two? Do either of you want physical enhancement?" Avery asked.
"No, I'm good with what I've already received. Plus, I don't have the money for it right now. I've been trying to save up for once I receive that new ship you've had commissioned for me." Kasandra replied swiftly.
As for Jasmine, she remained quiet and seriously thought about the matter for a good five minutes before giving her response.
Back when she had been in the Alliance Police, there was a program that officers could enter to receive physical augmentations, but it was difficult to get into and nothing was guaranteed. There was also the fact that doing so typically bound the individual in question to the organization for at least another ten years. Augmentations were not cheap, so officers that received them were expected to work hard enough to offset the cost.
"Even with all of my savings, I don't think I'd be able to afford more than the most basic enhancement. It probably wouldn't be worth it." Jasmine eventually said, shaking her head.
Seeing that money was the biggest concern for them, Avery decided to offer to pay for the procedures himself.
Being the leader of their mercenary group, he had received the largest portion of the profits. He was saving up for something big, but he felt that this was a necessary expense to keep himself, and the people he cared about safe.
"I mean, if you're willing to pay for it. I suppose I wouldn't mind. I can't see being faster and stronger hurting." Jasmine replied bashfully.
Kasandra on the other hand still declined the offer.
She already had enchantments, and there were some risks involved in the process. Especially when going to a different place from where she received her original augmentations.
"There's also the matter of the recovery period. It typically takes a few weeks to fully adjust to the enhancements, and during that time you're going to be sore all over and hardly able to move. If all three of us are out of commission at the same time, there won't be anyone to pilot the Dauntless."
"Okay, I get your reasoning. But if you ever do want additional augmentations, just say the word and we can make a detour to wherever you feel comfortable doing so." Avery said, bring their discussion to an end.
The three of them then continued to search through websites, catalogs, and reviews to find the best augmentation office in the system.
Yet, the deeper they delved, the more overwhelming things became.
In a normal system, there might be only a handful of professional businesses that focused on augmentation, but the Coccaro system was one of the most populous in the Dramid Alliance.
With over a hundred billion people living in the system, there were several thousands of practices that all said that they offered the best enhancements in the entire Alliance.
Some were branches of major corporations, while others were smaller scale and only had one location.
There were cheap ones and expensive ones, yet it was tough to truly determine which ones were trash or overly costly for style over substance.
"This is really a pain. I never thought hat having too many options would be this much of a problem." Avery grumbled as he set his tablet down and rubbed his eyes.
"Well, we've at least eliminated a few. Maybe we call it for today and take a break. It's not like we can go until after Grito's trial." Jasmine said, looking equally exhausted.
Considering that the Odium Syndicate had their sights set on one of their own, Avery and Jasmine could not afford to be bedridden right now. They would never be able to forgive themselves if Grito or one of the other members of their team died while they were busy recovering. For now, the two of them needed to be ready to fight if the situation demanded it.
However, just as the two of them had decided to call it quits for the day, Kasandra found a place that had received a recommendation from a famous seven star mercenary on a message board the only upper ranking mercenaries could access.
When she searched up the name of the place, she was blasted by ads for other businesses. In the end, she had to run a search program that eliminated the extra noise of the Coccaro System's central network just to find the place.
"Wow, that's archaic. They don't even have a site. All that's out there is a contact number you can send a transmission to." Kasandra said, her eyes wide in surprise.
Nevertheless, the more she dug into the place, the better it seemed.
Every review she could find for it was glowing. With some pretty big names having used their services.
"What's your take on it?" Avery asked when Kasandra showed him what she had found.
"If I had to guess, probably an eccentric professional that only works with people they want to. They've probably got some clout too, considering I couldn't even find the location of the office when I used the paid information gathering site for mercenaries. Still, if a seven star liked their work enough to talk about it, then they've got to be good. I think it would at least be worth reaching out and seeing what our options are."
Already being tired from the events of the day and his own fruitless search, he decided to send transmission to the augmentation specialist that Kasandra had found.
This was a bit of a gamble, however, since there was very little information on the place, and most of it was secondhand.
Kasandra thought that they might have just found some hidden gold though, so Avery figured that it was worth a shot. If this place really was good enough to meet the standards of a seven star mercenary, then he wanted to give it a shot.
He had put getting physical enhancements off since there had been other more pressing matters to take up his attention. But recent battles had shown him that he was too weak right now. If he wanted to keep rising through the ranks as a mercenary and not get killed during the process. He absolutely needed to get stronger. And sooner rather than later. frёewebnoѵēl.com
