Chapter 152 - 152- a forbidden love

In the blazing, golden month of July, Cynthia graduated. After crying and saying goodbye to Nancy with Bonnie and Vivian, the four girls parted ways, each heading in different directions in life.

Cynthia's clinic opened quietly, and she thought about finding the right time to tell him about it, preferably when he was demanding her presence in a passionate moment, when it seemed like he would agree to anything she said.

However, before she could speak, an unexpected event disrupted her original plans.

One day, while having lunch with Bonnie, whom she remained close to after graduation, frequently meeting up to go shopping and chat, Cynthia noticed Bonnie, usually cheerful and optimistic, seemed upset and troubled. Concerned, she asked,

"Laurence, what's been going on with you lately? You've seemed so down."

Bonnie sighed, poking at her rice absentmindedly.

"Sigh, Cynthia, my dad's health has been really bad lately. The Laurence family business has been under attack, and all the factions of the Si Hai Gang are starting to get unstable. My dad's been worrying too much, and his health has been getting worse, especially his heart."

Cynthia also felt a pang of sadness. Bonnie continued,

"You know, my brother was attacked recently and almost lost his life. My dad's heart condition worsened and he hasn't been able to recover. Now all these new problems have come up... sigh..."

After going through Jacob's incident, Bonnie started to realize that family was the only thing you could truly rely on. Carl Laurence and Robin Laurence were the people who loved and cared for her the most, and she began to treasure them as the dearest people in her heart.

Bonnie's feelings toward Robin Laurence made Cynthia think of Marc. When Marc passed away, she nearly collapsed, but luckily, she had him. He was there by her side, giving her warmth and comfort, providing her with strength and support, so she was able to pull through.

Thinking about the man who stood by her, Cynthia couldn't help but recall Bonnie's older brother, Carl Laurence. The way the Laurence patriarch dote on his sister was beyond words—he pampered her to the heavens. To get her some news to write about, he would even stir up scandals just to have her expose them. Sometimes he would even pressure and manipulate other celebrities to spill the beans.

But even just the scandals surrounding the Laurence family patriarch were enough to fill the front pages. After all, he had started taking over the Laurence family business, and in the near future, he would be the boss of the Si Hai Gang, the head of the Laurence family.

However, Cynthia always felt that Carl Laurence's gaze toward Bonnie was a bit strange. Although it was a gaze full of indulgence, it didn't feel like the affection a brother would show his sister. It felt more like... the tenderness a man would have for a woman.

She wasn't sure if Bonnie had noticed it herself or if she was just being overly sensitive. She never had the courage to ask because it was such a subtle topic. Even though they were best friends, she still felt like it would be awkward to bring it up.

Pulling her wandering thoughts back to the present, she looked at Bonnie and asked,

"Hasn't your brother already started taking over the Laurence family business?"

Clearly, when Cynthia mentioned Carl Laurence, Bonnie's gaze faltered for a moment before returning to normal, and then she said,

"Well, he has, but my brother is still too young. For some big matters, he still has to ask my dad."

After saying that, Bonnie, as if seeking help, took Cynthia's hand.

"Cynthia, I know your medical skills are excellent. I want to ask you to help check my dad's health and see what his condition really is. We've tried to convince him to go to the hospital, but he refuses and even scolds us, saying that those so-called doctors at the hospital will find diseases even when there's nothing wrong with him!"

After saving Carl Laurence, Robin Laurence had recognized Cynthia's medical abilities. Bonnie thought that if she asked Cynthia to check on Robin, he probably wouldn't mind too much. She figured with a little charm from her side, everything should be fine.

Cynthia furrowed her brows, thinking it over for a moment, but then she agreed to Bonnie's request. First, because Bonnie was her best friend, and she didn't want to make things difficult for her. Second, because she could empathize with Bonnie's feelings—the urgency and agony of caring deeply for someone.

Bonnie was immediately overjoyed. She called Robin Laurence and told him that she had some time in the afternoon, and since Laurence Dodo and her mother wouldn't be home, she and Cynthia could come over after lunch.

Cynthia, of course, appeared as she did when she saved Carl Laurence—wearing her usual plain disguise, with her slender, tall figure and sharp, confident gaze.

After performing a simple full-body checkup on Robin Laurence, Cynthia confirmed that his health wasn't in great condition, especially his heart. She also noticed signs of drug use. Well, she had heard that he was involved in the drug trade, so it wasn't surprising that he was entangled with such things.

Given Robin Laurence's current state, he really shouldn't be working anymore. If he didn't take care of himself, he likely wouldn't live for many more years. However, with proper rest and care, living a peaceful life in his later years wouldn't be a problem.

After finishing the checkup, she spoke privately with Carl Laurence and Bonnie about Robin's condition. Bonnie's face was full of concern, while Carl Laurence sat there, frowning in thought.

Carl Laurence was a melancholic, handsome man. His neatly styled short brown hair and slim, almost frail build made him look nothing like the son of a drug lord, let alone someone about to take on that role.

He looked like one of those beautiful boys who stepped out of a manga, carrying an air of sadness and a quiet sorrow. His eyes often appeared calm and emotionless, only showing a spark when he looked at Bonnie.

However, he was known to be ruthless and bloodthirsty, which was why he had taken Robin Laurence's position at such a young age. It was also why his subordinates, a group of dangerous men, obeyed him without question.

After a long pause, he finally looked up at Bonnie and spoke gently,

"Bonnie, here's the thing: Dad has an important business meeting tomorrow, and his emotions might be a bit unstable. I hope you can be there to help him out and keep an eye on Wilson for me."

Bonnie pouted, about to protest, but Carl Laurence continued,

"This business deal is crucial. Dad insists on handling it himself. I promise you, after this, I won't let him worry about anything else, okay?"

Bonnie sighed but ultimately agreed. She knew how stubborn Robin Laurence was. Once he made up his mind about something, no one could change it. She turned to Cynthia, waiting for her response.

Cynthia smiled softly,

"Since that's the case, I'll accompany Uncle tomorrow. As long as he's in good health, I'm happy to help."

It was a small favor for her, and she didn't want to make things difficult for Bonnie.

Bonnie exaggeratedly hugged Cynthia.

"Ugh, thank you!"

But she was met with a cold, sharp look from Carl Laurence. Cynthia quickly pulled Bonnie away.

"Laurence, why don't you go with me to get some medicine for Uncle?"

The heart disease medicine that Gary developed was quite effective. Since both he and Victoria had congenital heart conditions, he had put a lot of effort into this area.

On their way to the orphanage, Cynthia hesitated for a while before finally asking the question that had been on her mind.

"Laurence, about... your brother, and how he feels toward you..."

"Sigh..."

Bonnie sighed deeply.

"Cynthia, I know what you mean. I also feel something's off, but we're siblings, right? Though we have different mothers, we still share blood. Maybe he just cares about me too much."

She hadn't paid much attention to Carl Laurence's feelings for her before, but ever since that incident on the night of the power outage, she had started to feel that his gaze was different. Yet, every time she reminded herself of their sibling relationship, she comforted herself and brushed it off.

It was the only way she could comfort herself. What else could she do? She glanced at Cynthia with frustration.

"He's always been there since I can remember. He's one year older than me. Mom always said he was born after my stepmother carried him for ten months... How could he feel like this about me?"

Cynthia didn't know how to respond. She had never encountered something like this before. Carl Laurence's feelings were a forbidden love.
