Chapter 242: Chapter 242- you deserve better

Carl’s heart ached as he looked at her pale face, his voice filled with concern and tenderness.

"Bonnie, let me stay and take care of you for a few days."

Bonnie turned her head slightly, the tears she had been holding back now threatening to spill. She could see the sincerity in his eyes, the love he had been hiding for so long, but she knew deep down that she couldn’t give him what he wanted.

She quietly shook her head.

"No, Carl... I can’t. You should go back to Thailand. It’s too dangerous for you here, and I don’t want to drag you into my mess."

Her voice trembled, and she could feel her heart breaking with every word she said. She didn’t want him to stay because she knew it would only cause more pain for both of them. She had already been through so much, and she didn’t want him to suffer because of her.

Carl’s eyes darkened, but he didn’t push her. He understood her hesitation, the pain in her heart. He knew she was trying to protect him, but he wasn’t going anywhere.

"I won’t leave you, Bonnie. I can’t just walk away. You may not feel the same, but I can’t let you face everything alone."

Bonnie felt a lump form in her throat, and her hands clenched into fists. She wanted to push him away, to make him leave, but her heart was pulling her in the opposite direction. The truth was, she was terrified of being alone, terrified of facing the future without him, even though she knew their love was impossible.

"Please, Carl... Just go."

But he remained silent, his gaze steady, never looking away.

The silence stretched between them, heavy and filled with unspoken words. Neither of them knew how to fix the brokenness that had come between them, but in that moment, neither of them was willing to give up.

Bonnie didn’t protest as Carl moved toward the door to leave. She was too exhausted, both physically and emotionally, to argue anymore. She let out a soft sigh, wishing things could be different, but knowing that reality had placed them in this complicated situation.

As Carl left to buy some food, Bonnie sank further into the couch, her hands clutching the fabric tightly as she tried to steady her breathing. Her mind was in turmoil, torn between her feelings for him and the consequences of those feelings. She had always known there was a deep bond between them, but this... this situation was something entirely different. She didn’t know if she could handle it anymore.

Not long after, Carl returned, carrying bags of groceries. He immediately started pulling ingredients out, his movements focused as he prepared a simple meal. Bonnie couldn’t help but watch him, the familiar motions of him cooking reminding her of their past when life had seemed so much easier, when their world wasn’t broken into so many unspoken rules and fears.

He set a bowl of soup in front of her, his voice soft but insistent.

"Eat something, Bonnie. You need to take care of yourself. You’re not just living for yourself anymore."

Bonnie stared at the soup, the scent comforting yet somehow bittersweet. She reached for the spoon, her hand shaking slightly, but before she could take a bite, she spoke up, her voice small.

"Do you ever wonder... if everything could’ve been different? If we didn’t have to hide everything, if you didn’t have to be who you are..."

Carl stopped what he was doing, his eyes briefly meeting hers. There was a long, heavy pause, then he sat down across from her, his expression unreadable.

"Every day, Bonnie. But I made my choices. I can’t go back. All I can do now is protect you, even if it means I have to stay in the shadows."

Bonnie looked down at the soup, the heat from it a stark contrast to the cold weight in her chest. She nodded, taking a deep breath.

"I know. But... you deserve better than this. You deserve a life that’s not always on the run, a life without... everything we’ve been through."

Carl’s voice was quiet, almost a whisper, but the sincerity in it made her heart ache.

"Maybe. But I’d rather have this... with you."

Bonnie couldn’t respond. What could she say to that? The weight of his words settled heavily in her chest. She had to admit, no matter how complicated things were, she didn’t want him to leave. But at the same time, she feared that by keeping him in her life, she was only dragging him further into the dangerous world he had worked so hard to escape.

The night stretched on, and the two of them sat in silence, the only sound being the clinking of spoons and the occasional sigh.

"Stop, stop, stop!"

Bonnie quickly climbed up from the sofa, her face full of panic as she grabbed him.

"Don’t go out to buy it. What if you’re spotted? You can stay here and look after Wilson for a few days if you want, I don’t mind, but you can’t go out. I’ll buy the groceries after work!"

Carl couldn’t help but laugh when he saw how worried she was.

"Don’t worry. I didn’t use the name ’Carl’ for the drug business I did in Thailand, and very few people have seen me. No one will recognize me."

"Huh? Then what name did you use?"

She looked at him in confusion.

"Well, you don’t need to know that. It’s a secret, hehe!"

He suppressed the sadness in his heart and turned to leave, but Bonnie thought for a moment and stopped him.

"Carl, it’s so late, just forget it for today. You can just make me a bowl of noodles!"

Better to be cautious.

Carl agreed and turned around to grab the noodles, heading into the kitchen. Bonnie lay back down on the sofa and cautiously reached out to touch her abdomen, a faint smile slowly spreading across her face.

When Carl came out of the kitchen with the bowl of noodles, he saw this scene. He handed the bowl and chopsticks to her, then sat down across from her. Seeing how hard it was for her to eat the noodles, he carefully chose his words.

"Does... he know about this?"

She shook her head.

"I don’t plan to let him know. We’re divorced, and I don’t want him to think I’m trying to use the child to threaten him or something. Anyway, my income is pretty good, so taking care of a child isn’t a problem."

He nodded and then smiled, trying to comfort her. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"Don’t forget, you still have me as your uncle. You know, your uncle’s money is more than enough to last forever—just waiting to be passed down to my little nephew!"

She immediately nodded vigorously and then buried her head to eat the noodles. Only then did he dare to let his gaze greedily linger on her. Always considering himself as her older brother, she could let go of all her reservations and face him without fear. Perhaps, this was his karmic retribution.
