Plotting with You: The Forensic Scientist in Ancient Times!-Chapter 421 - 420: Pulse Diagnosis
The dinner brought by the servants had no issues. After Yan Daoxin’s confirmation, Zhu Yu finally enjoyed a hearty meal and drank two cups of sweet fruit wine.
After being both thirsty and hungry for almost two full days, having a meal was very comforting, even though she couldn’t fully relax now, it still felt much better.
Not long after dinner, the two servants came in to clear away the dishes. As usual, Zhu Yu put on a cautious and respectful face and escorted them to the door, taking the opportunity to peek outside.
She found she might have been overly worried, as the two servants left without even caring to ensure the door was properly closed, allowing Zhu Yu to stand by the door and look outside.
Even after the two servants had walked far, Zhu Yu remained by the door, noticing no one was lurking at the bottom of the wooden stairs. It was quiet all around, with only winding paths in sight and no other rooms visible.
After a while, Zhu Yu closed the door and turned to Yan Daoxin inside the room, saying, "I feel like they aren’t worried about anyone trying to escape from here.
And it seems that there aren’t as many women here as we suspected based on the rumors we heard outside."
Yan Daoxin, who was now lounging on the Imperial Concubine’s chair, replied: "When we came in, those two hulking Protectors by the door and that overly tall threshold were quite revealing.
I reckon that most of the medicine men here aren’t physically strong, and a threshold that tall would be impossible for them to climb over. Even if they are somewhat fit, there’s only one exit, guarded by two sturdy Protectors, easy to block.
Also, there are no Windows here. I originally thought it might be to prevent escape through them, but then I remembered Chang’e Drunk."
Zhu Yu suddenly understood, "Is this stuff sensitive to light even when ingested?"
Yan Daoxin shook his head, "It’s hard to say. I’ve never tried something that sinister myself, so all possibilities remain guesswork.
It’s indeed a tricky situation. Even if we encounter one of their medicine men, we can’t very well drag a living person into the sun to test it!"
"The musician did mention that when the madam saw Nanny Shi taking the women out for fitting, they didn’t linger outside. They just took off their cloaks and veils inside the cloth shop, but after coming out, they covered up again.
That indeed supports our suspicion," Zhu Yu recalled.
The two exchanged glances in silence, sharing an unspoken thought that the seemingly peaceful Little Mountain Building might be hiding terrifying secrets.
That night, it was very quiet outside, with no one disturbing them, yet Zhu Yu and Yan Daoxin remained on edge, unwilling to fully fall asleep, one staying in the outer room, the other in the inner room.
Even though Yan Daoxin said he would keep watch so Zhu Yu could get some rest, she still couldn’t sleep due to the tension.
The next day, shortly after breakfast, Nanny Shi came in with some people.
Yan Daoxin still looked weak with disheveled hair, lying on the Imperial Concubine’s chair, while Zhu Yu sat next to him, ready to cover for him at any moment.
As soon as Nanny Shi saw Yan Daoxin’s face, her eyes lit up with delight, the word "overjoyed" practically written on her face.
"How did the two girls rest last night?" Her old walnut-like face was still thick with smiles that barely showed any kindness, as she pulled out a doctor-like person with a medicine box from behind her, "I saw you were very weak yesterday and worried that the journey had further worn down your health.
So, today, since the doctor happens to be here in our Little Mountain Building to do check-ups, I asked him to take a look at you both! 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
You’re both still young and don’t realize how worrying it is to ruin your health. We are lucky to have this opportunity, and I couldn’t stand seeing two beauties in such dire straits.
No need to be polite with me, just get checked, and you’ll know how to recuperate later. On my end, it’s not a big deal at all!"
Zhu Yu’s heart pounded, and her palms sweated as she replied politely, expressing deep gratitude for Nanny Shi’s hospitality, having given them meals and saved them from starvation, feeling deeply indebted and not wanting to cause any further trouble or expense.
In reality, she was rather apprehensive.
She wasn’t sure about the doctor’s proficiency. If after the check-up, he found nothing wrong with her or Yan Daoxin, it would be fine.
But if the examination reveals that Yan Daoxin is, in fact, a man... that would expose them instantly!
As she exchanged pleasantries with Nanny Shi, trying to buy time, Zhu Yu felt Yan Daoxin poking lightly but distinctly at several spots on her back.
The motion was subtle and hidden from Nanny Shi and her group’s view, yet Zhu Yu clearly felt a peculiar numbing sensation spreading rapidly across one side of her body.
Nanny Shi left Zhu Yu no further chance to delay, signaling to the doctor-like person with a wave. Purposefully, he stepped forward, unfurling a handkerchief from his pocket, nodding to Zhu Yu: "Miss, please extend your wrist."
Zhu Yu had no choice but to comply and extended her hand.
The doctor covered Zhu Yu’s wrist with the thin handkerchief, then placed his fingers on it, closing his eyes slightly. After a moment, he asked her to switch hands, maintaining a meticulous and deliberate demeanor throughout.
Zhu Yu felt anxious, but her face remained cautiously respectful, much like a poor girl unexpectedly receiving care would react.
After thoroughly checking her pulse, the doctor turned to Yan Daoxin behind her.
Feigning frailty, Yan Daoxin subtly nodded at the doctor, who almost couldn’t look away. Nanny Shi cleared her throat from behind, and only then did he snap back to his senses and hastily tended to Yan Daoxin.
Sitting nearby, Zhu Yu’s heart was in her throat.
Fortunately, after all the efforts, the doctor finally shook the handkerchief and tucked it back into his pocket. He returned to Nanny Shi to report, "Both young ladies are just fatigued with no serious issues, likely from prior exhaustion. They should recover with some rest."
