Chapter 40: Chapter 40 I Love Money Very Much
Chapter 40 -40 I Love Money Very Much
“Jin’an!”
Kexin exclaimed, immediately turning away from Qiao En and rushing towards Zhou Jin’an.
However, it was already too late.
The teacup struck Zhou Jin’an’s chest and fell to the ground, shattering into pieces with a ‘clink’.
Tea splashed everywhere, soaking Zhou Jin’an’s expensive suit.
Tea leaves hung off his chest, dripping wet.
“Jin’an, are you hurt?”
Kexin was extremely anxious. She reached out to wipe the tea leaves off Zhou Jin’an and tried to dry the stains on his clothes.
But Zhou Jin’an pushed her away.
“It seems I missed quite a spectacle?”
He said this and strode into the living room, his piercing gaze sweeping over Qiao En who stood in front of Mrs. Zhou.
Her evening attire was the same, except her pale cheeks now bore two red marks.
“Is it not quite a spectacle?”
Mrs. Zhou snorted coldly from her nostrils, her meaning pointed.
“Did you hit her?”
Zhou Jin’an poured himself a cup of tea, not drinking it, but merely blowing on the tea leaves that floated on the surface.
He looked calm, but anger was already clouding his brows.
“She deserved it,”
Mrs. Zhou declared emphatically.
Zhou Jin’an leaned back on the couch and pulled off the tie around his neck.
“She is no longer my secretary, why cling to her? Qiao En, please leave.”
Zhou Jin’an raised his voice, issuing a command.
Qiao En took the hint, recognizing that Zhou Jin’an was giving her a chance to escape.
“Yes, Director Zhou.”
Qiao En complied, turning to leave.
“Wait.”
Mrs. Zhou called out to stop her.
Her face was extremely unpleased, on the verge of bursting out yet restraining herself, her face turning purple and black with the effort.
“Aunt Liu, bring down the wooden box from my nightstand,”
Mrs. Zhou ordered the housekeeper Aunt Liu.
With a nod, Aunt Liu quickly went to fetch it.
Everyone in the room stayed silent and still in their places.
Soon, Aunt Liu returned, holding a brown wooden box, which she presented to Mrs. Zhou respectfully.
“Madam, here is the object.”
“Open it.”
Mrs. Zhou ordered again.
Obediently, Aunt Liu opened the box.
Inside was a folded white paper which Aunt Liu took out and handed to Mrs. Zhou.
However, Mrs. Zhou directed her to give it to Zhou Jin’an.
“Take a look.”
Qiao En was a distance away from Zhou Jin’an, unable to see what was written on the paper, but she could tell that after reading the contents, Zhou Jin’an’s expression turned even darker.
He looked up, his gaze sharp as a knife towards Qiao En.
“What’s this?”
Kexin suddenly moved behind Zhou Jin’an, grabbing the paper from him.
“A partnership agreement?”
She muttered under her breath.
Upon hearing these words, Qiao En felt like she was facing a great enemy, her complexion instantaneously turning pale.
Three years ago, when she and Mrs. Zhou signed this partnership agreement, they had an arrangement: she would watch over Zhou Jin’an while Mrs. Zhou would cure Qiao’s father.
But there was one condition: the moment Zhou Jin’an was no longer single, Qiao En must leave.
This agreement had remained a secret, and Zhou Jin’an had never known about it.
But now, Mrs. Zhou had handed this agreement to Zhou Jin’an.
She did this to sever any hopes Zhou Jin’an might have had in his heart.
The deep affection he held on to was a deception from the start, how ironic!
“Did you sign this?”
Zhou Jin’an rose to his feet; he stepped closer and closer to Qiao En.
The tall figure loomed over her, engulfing her from his higher stance.
Qiao En’s eyelids drooped.
She dared not meet Zhou Jin’an’s eyes.
“Hmm.”
After a long while, she responded faintly.
Her response meant that these past three years had been all about deceit.
“Jin’an, do you understand now? She never loved you. She was with you for a reason. Are you going to continue deceiving yourself?”
Mrs. Zhou shouted harshly.
Zhou Jin’an’s temples throbbed with visible veins.
In his life, what he hated the most was deceit.
Yet the woman he cared about the most had deceived him the deepest.
“Why would you do this?”
Zhou Jin’an’s deep voice resounded.
Qiao En remained silent, not answering.
Out of frustration, Zhou Jin’an grabbed Qiao En’s arm.
“Speak, are you deaf or have you gone mute? Why would you do this?”
He rebuked loudly, unleashing all his pent-up fury on Qiao En.
Zhou Jin’an’s long fingers tightly clutched Qiao En’s arm, each finger tightening, her arm already bruising.
At that moment, Zhou Jin’an was like a maddened lion, capable of devouring someone at any time.
An Kexin collided unseasonably with the barrel of his gun.
“An Ge, you’re going to hurt Secretary Qiao. There must be a reason she kept it from you. Will you please wake up? Stop being delusional.”
“Get out—”
Zhou Jin’an roared again.
Scared out of her wits, An Kexin quickly backed away several steps.
“Why would you do this? Why?”
Zhou Jin’an pressured Qiao En for an answer, hoping to hear something that might ease his heart a bit.
But deceived is deceived.
It’s clear in black and white; can’t he understand?
Qiao En slowly lifted her eyelids, her gaze calmly meeting Zhou Jin’an’s.
“Director Zhou, you know I love money. I can do anything for money. I can be your secretary or Mrs. Zhou’s pawn; there’s no conflict between the two, and besides, I get paid twice.”
“Now that you know the truth, there’s no need for secrets. I indeed approached you for money, played along with you. Director Zhou has been generous, and I’ve made a fortune. I really should thank you, Director Zhou!”
As Qiao En spoke, she even flashed a proud smile.
Yes, that proud smile stabbed at Zhou Jin’an’s heart once again.
His anger clouded his judgment, unable to differentiate facts from truth.
He remembered how he had embarrassed himself trying to reconcile and beg for peace, and each time, Qiao En had casually rejected him.
Back then, Zhou Jin’an couldn’t understand why Qiao En was so cold-hearted.
But now, he understood it all.
“Qiao En, you are despicable!”
Zhou Jin’an squeezed out these words through gritted teeth, as if he had used up all his strength, then turned around and strode toward the entrance.
“Thank you for the undue praise, Director Zhou.”
Qiao En’s professional smile was painfully stiff.
Zhou Jin’an slammed the door as he left, leaving only the three women behind in the room.
An Kexin was full of confusion; she stared blankly at Mrs. Zhou.
“Aunt Zhou, is this true?”
Mrs. Zhou didn’t answer; she coldly swept her gaze over Qiao En.
“Leave now, and don’t let me see you again.”
“Yes, Mrs. Zhou.”
Qiao En bid Mrs. Zhou farewell and walked steadily toward the door.
With each step, a chill crept into her heart.
As she left the Zhou family mansion, drizzle started to fall from the sky, fine and dense.
Qiao En, without an umbrella, walked bareheaded through the drizzle.
At the corner in front of the old mansion, Zhou Jin’an’s ride was still parked there.
Seeing it, Qiao En sighed heavily; she did not move forward but turned in the opposite direction.
