Chapter 676: The First of the List

A few moves later, Matthew held his sword to his neck.

"Looks like I won," he said.

Sun Woo looked at him in shock. "I never thought vampires were so good at martial arts." He said, dropping his weapon to declare defeat.

"You’ve never fought Liam Wagner?" Matthew asked, surprised. That guy was looking for strong opponents to fight, so how could he not have fought this guy, who was clearly a martial arts genius?

Sun Woo shook his head slightly. "He’s different. He’s not just any vampire," he said.

Matthew smiled then. ’I guess he’s right,’ he thought.

"I’m not as good as you think," he said and put away his sword. "You really are better than me. I just know how to exploit mistakes better than you, but in a head-on martial arts fight, I couldn’t beat you."

"So I lost to your experience?" Sun Woo asked, confused by his answer.

"You can think of it that way." Matthew smiled.

"I see." Sun Woo nodded. In a way, it made perfect sense.

Throughout the fight, he had felt that Matthew’s martial arts were not his strong suit and that his physical strength was clearly below his own. Despite having taken a few hits from Matthew, he was not at all injured or exhausted, but Matthew looked tired.

At first, he thought he had lost because Matthew had been feigning weakness, a tactic used in martial arts to deceive opponents. But upon further reflection, he realized he hadn’t fallen into the trap of believing Matthew was weak and that he could let his guard down.

On the contrary, Matthew made him fall into the trap of thinking he had made a mistake when he was only looking to create openings in his body.

’I see, that’s what Liam Wagner did that time,’ Sun Woo thought, understanding some things from the past.

He hadn’t noticed it until now because Liam Wagner wasn’t very forthcoming about his martial tactics.

"Thank you, Mr. Vampire." Sun Woo was sincere and even bowed to Matthew.

Matthew was taken aback. "Huh? Why are you thanking me?" he asked in shock.

"You’ve made me understand a few things. It’s not always the best who wins, but the one who knows how to take advantage of their opponent’s mistakes. I hadn’t seen it that way before," he replied.

"Ah..." Matthew nodded.

’And to think that the first time I learned about that was playing a video game on Earth.’ He smiled.

And they said video games wouldn’t do him any good...

He came to his senses and patted Sun Woo on the shoulder.

"In that case, get ready to introduce me to your father at the end of the tournament." He smiled at him and started walking in the opposite direction.

"Aren’t you coming right away, Mr. Vampire? My father would welcome you warmly," he said.

"I still have a tournament to participate in. Since I’m already registered, I have to follow through," Matthew said.

"I see." Sun Woo nodded. "Then I’ll see you later, Mr. Vampire. I’ll look for you personally in White Edge City."

"Good, good." Matthew shook his hands, before disappearing into the crowd of trees... he had to find his last core. Obviously, he wasn’t going to take it from Sun Woo, even though they were from the same family as those other beasts.

He liked the boy.

...

About 15 minutes later, Matthew emerged from the forest.

"Hm?" The elders frowned. "Are you giving up, Mr. Matthew?" one of them asked in shock.

"Give up?" Matthew shook his head and approached them. He took out the cores he had obtained and handed them over. "I’m done," he said, handing over the sword as well.

"This thing doesn’t seem to be able to hold out any longer. I encountered a strong guy in there, so there was no choice but to fight," he said.

The elders looked at him in shock, their eyes shining with madness.

’Really? A foreigner finished before all our groups again? And so quickly!’

The cores were fine; they were just what they asked for. Even a little above average in strength, but that was okay.

’It has a lot of damage,’ thought the elder who was handed the sword. ’He must have fought someone really strong in there. Was he the one we all sensed, then?’ he thought.

He touched the nicks on the sword and noticed they were slightly rounded.

"You fought Sun Woo, the son of Grand Master Sun Wukong, right?" the old man asked suddenly, taking the elders who were still processing the situation by surprise.

Matthew simply nodded. "Yes. We made a bet, so I had to fight. If the organization doesn’t cover this damage, that’s fine; I can cover it."

"Ah, no, no, no." The old man quickly laughed. "Of course, we’ll cover all this damage. We were a little inefficient in letting someone so powerful in at this moment, but I hope you’ll forgive us. We can’t control the Sun Clan; we don’t even know where they are."

After quickly apologizing, the old man took out another identical sword and handed it to him.

Although he was dying of curiosity to know who had won that bet, he didn’t need to ask what was obvious. Although he was unharmed, the sword had terrible damage.

Sun Woo had drastically outmatched him. But having the joy of saying he fought Sun Wukong’s son could already be counted among his martial arts achievements.

Matthew was given a chair where he could wait and do whatever he wanted. He had finished too quickly, so it would still be a while before the rest of the groups arrived.

Although there was some surprise this time, for the elders, it was within expectations.

Juliet’s group left about an hour and a half after Matthew.

’Incredible. Not only are they fast, but they also know very well where to find their targets,’ he thought.

When Juliet saw him here, she quickly approached him. "Um... Mr. Matthew... Did something happen?" she asked.

The elder man beside him frowned. ’Do these two know each other?’ he thought and looked at the young people behind Juliet. Several of them looked at him with envy/hatred. Others... with fear and even respect.

Matthew looked at her. "About what?" he asked.

"Uh." She was speechless for several seconds before gathering the courage to ask. "Did you... give up?" she asked.

Her question reached the young people behind her, whose expressions changed dramatically. Among them, two looked at the one with the look of fear and respect.

They didn’t think he would have done so well!

But he smiled sheepishly as he shook his head. ’How could he give up? He could easily pass that test,’ he thought.

That only meant that...

"No, I don’t think I gave up," he said and pointed to the old man’s book listing the top 100 names.

Everyone turned to look... just above all their names, there was another name.

Matthew Lewis.

He was number one.
