Chapter 678: Sense of heroism

"Bring me the usual," said Matthew.

The hotel owner nodded and left. Somehow, he now looked at him with different eyes. Before, he thought he was a quiet young man, but a good person, who really just wanted to strengthen his body.

But his words now made him see a slightly different life.

Matthew remembered his father’s words... the one from Earth.

"If your words or actions can change someone’s life, then you will be a hero to them, and you must accept that. Sometimes life is simple in the eyes of the beholder, but we don’t know how much the person affected suffers because of what you see as simple."

His father on Earth was everything a hero would want to be. His mentality, way of being, and actions were what shaped Matthew on Earth, who had so many desires for heroism, capable of transforming the Earth.

Whose desires for heroism vanished on a starry New Year’s Eve, on his last run of the long chase. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

December, a time of celebration on earth and in this world, is for him only a month of misfortune, in which the greatest misfortune his mind can remember occurred.

In the end, the words and deeds of heroism he once had were buried after being killed by his former comrades.

Although a similar feeling now seems to exist, it is not one of heroism, but of preserving something he believes is his.

His father, the Great Dietrich, once told him that he was not a hero. His mentality was not that of one, and his actions should not be taken as heroic, even though they saved and preserved an entire race. Because he was the creator of that race, it belongs to him, and he only tries to preserve it because it is his.

That mindset allowed him to plan for the long term for the sake of the race, without thinking that he would be its hero. Perhaps the race would have another hero sooner or later, or perhaps it would have many, but he would not be remembered as one of them. Rather, he would be remembered as its founder.

That is the mindset that has recently dawned on Matthew. He does not want to be a hero; rather, he wants to preserve his father’s and his own legacy.

’And it doesn’t matter if this is the right thing to do or not. It’s what I must do. After all, with great power comes great responsibility,’ he thought.

Although thinking about that... his mind entered into a small contradiction. It was exactly the same thing he thought when he was on Earth, that he had been given tremendous power to save the entire race, but in the end, he regretted saving it.

Perhaps the earth would be a better place if he let humanity be exterminated... That’s what he thought.

’I guess I’ll find out soon enough.’ He smiled softly.

’Although I really feel like it’s been a long time. I don’t want to delay any longer; when I return to earth, those guys could be dead, and I wouldn’t be able to get my revenge.’

While waiting for his food, his mind was plagued with thoughts about the same thing.

When the food arrived, he devoured it in no time, then paid and got up to go to the city center.

It was 4:30 when he arrived. People had already been gathering for a while to get a place to sit, while among the contestants, only Matthew stood, watching the organizers do everything.

’There’s still almost two hours to go, so it’s normal,’ he thought, stretching a little, then began jogging around the entire combat arena, without getting in the way of the organizers.

"That boy... He’s a contestant, right?" From a VIP room, a man sat watching how everything was being organized.

He was one of the leaders of the city’s most powerful clans and a key organizer.

Several subordinates were sitting next to him.

"Yes, Mr. Richard. He’s a foreigner from the Dark Kingdom, Matthew Lewis, and yesterday he came in first in the first test," one of them replied.

"Matthew and Lewis? What a curious combination." He looked at the one who had just spoken.

"The Governor himself interviewed him earlier. He has Lewis blood from the Dark Kingdom, but he’s a distant relative."

"A bastard son, as they say?"

"Something like that, sir."

"Oh. He came running so early, I’d say he’s a disciplined guy."

"He is. Informants have told us that he gets up at 4 a.m. and remains active thereafter. He has also been seen training martial arts alone, as he travels alone."

"Too bad he belongs to those Lewis guys; they seem to be in trouble lately. The clan leader is becoming more and more useless, his ancestor does nothing, and Young Master Dietrich had to come and take control because those two idiots and their advisor are losing on all fronts." Richard sighed visibly as he shook his head. "A bunch of idiots. They used to be good. I don’t know what happened to them."

"Hahaha, Mr. Richard, after all, we all know that the Dark King is not worthy of his reign. What I can’t explain is why Gray Allen allowed him to come to power."

"To control him, surely. Gray Allen is no fool; he knows that as long as the king fears him, he will have almost total power in the kingdom," Richard replied. "Or maybe the guy just changed when he got power. He wasn’t up to the task."

"If even you don’t know..." Richard’s subordinate shook his head and looked at the young man jogging.

"By the way, Lord Richard. Young Matthew also seems to get along quite well with Miss Juliet," he recalled.

"Hm?" Richard turned to look at Matthew and frowned. "With Juliet?" His gaze followed him slowly.

"We don’t know when they met, but it must have been recently. They get along quite well, more than we expected. She probably saw something."

Richard nodded slightly. "She practiced art is special, after all. The gravity of her body will be drawn to special places." Richard joked. "Keep an eye on that boy, he looks interesting."

"Doesn’t it bother you, sir?" asked his subordinate.

"Bother me what?" Richard looked at him as if he were an idiot.

"She’s your only daughter, and this boy is a traveler. It’s no secret to anyone in town that Juliet’s dream is to travel the world. What if...?" He didn’t finish his words; he knew his master understood.

"Well, she needs to grow up. After talking with the elders, we agreed to send her to train with the clan that rules these lands. Her talent can’t die locked up in White Edge, you know. If this boy can prove himself worthy, my White Edge will dress in red to welcome him as her husband. Obviously, if that is Juliet’s wish," Richard replied.

"I don’t know how the other young masters in the city will respond to your words now, Lord Richard." His subordinate shook his head... Those stubborn young men and their clans had been helping the Clan a lot for years, solely because they were all madly in love with Juliet.

If it turned out that Juliet wasn’t going to go to any of them, but to a foreigner... They would die foaming at the mouth!

Richard didn’t care. If they weren’t worthy, then there was nothing to be done.
