Chapter 13: 13: The final push

---

"Stay with it, Kai. You need to divide your attention. Power, speed, endurance, these are yours now. Don't squander them!"

His own voice, taut as it was, had a strand of obstinate stubbornness.

Finally, the third zombie ant, the largest of the trio, charged with a fearsome roar.

"This is it, the final push!"

Kai bellowed. He sidestepped the ant's initial lunge, his body moving with precise agility.

"You're about to learn what true power feels like!"

He shouted, activating his Essence Eater one more time.

With a blood-curdling scream, Kai plunged his fangs deep into the rotting flesh of the third ant. The black essence fluid gushed out, and the system flashed a new message:

[Ding! SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:

STAT POINTS +4 and +200 EXP for second and third zombie ant kill.]

The third zombie ant body convulsed and awakened, its tainted air dissipating. An uneasy silence descended on the tunnel as Kai emerged from the vanquished enemies, battered and alive but victorious.

[Congratulations, you have leveled up.]

Victory and New Beginnings

Kai breathed a sigh. "Level three. progress," he stated, pride and fatigue mixed. "I've survived this attack. and lived." He looked at the system screen, which flickered to show his updated status:

Kai's scowl eased as he read off the screen, "Not bad at all. I level up. Every enemy, every drop of essence liquid, brings me closer to that One-Star Rank." He paused, his voice contemplative. "I wasn't beaten today, and with these new points, I grow even more powerful. I am no longer the weak ant that I once was."

"Yes! Yes! Yes!"

Looking back at the fallen zombie ants, he added, "Your defeat wasn't in vain. You've given me the power to my brighter future, to conquer, and to become a predator in this unforgiving world."

Halting for a moment there, Kai's gaze still fastened one final time on the defeated enemies and the dark, devastated tunnel that surrounded him.

"I have to keep going. There's no turning back—not when the real test has barely begun." With a resolute voice, "I've made up my mind. I'll train, I'll learn, and I'll battle through every obstacle that gets in my way."

With a newfound sense of direction, Kai departed the battlefield, his eyes ablaze with fierce resolve. "The future is mine," he growled, "and I'll take it with every means available to me."

As he went deeper into the tunnel, his heart pounded in anticipation of what lay ahead. Kai disappeared into the shadows with footsteps that echoed.

He left behind many of his fallen foes and whatever remnants there were of their corrupted essence, promised that every single victory, earned statue point would engrave in this ruthless underworld, the path of destiny.

That day Kai didn't do much, he only recuperated to regenerate his HP and Aura. The following day, early morning...

The dark, humid corridors of the ant nest glowed with life and decay. Kai's ant body shuddered as he stretched his legs, his antennae twitching in anticipation. His goal was set: reach Level 10 before the deadline. The system had promised power, and Kai was determined to claim it, no matter what trials lay ahead.

[Ding! Daily Missions Assigned.]

1. Tunnel Sprint Challenge: Blasting through the seismics-tunnels. (Speed Training + Survival Instincts)

2. Predator's Gauntlet: Slaying five new predator enemy animals lying in wait in the lower level of the nest. (Combat Test)

3. Devourer's Awakening: Channeling the power of a strong enemy to use the Essence Eater skill to go to the next level.

Kai clicked his mandibles with fury. "Another cursed day brought me another day of madness and hardwork." Folding his belly, he rocketed off to his first challenge.

Kai's antennae quivered in fear as the ground around him trembled. Tunnels ahead were collapsing, rocks and earth pelting down in a deathstorm.

[Ding! Mission Start: Get to the other side of the tunnel before total collapse.]

A deafening shock burst out of the cave. 'March Forward,' Kai shot ahead. His legs aching with each step, dodging crashing rocks that burst into the saw-toothed walls. Each dash, each leap, a fight against gravity's merciless force and fury of nature. Crash after crash of falling stone boomed around him, interspersed with the pounding of his heart.

A massive boulder came crashing down ahead. Time slowed as Kai's mind sharpened in the face of impending doom. With a rapid spin, he twisted his body mid-air and darted between the gaps, each movement honed to perfection by the trials of countless battles.

"If I was a bit slower, and didn't react in time, I might have become an ant pancake," he muttered, barely slipping through a collapsing archway.

The tunnel constricted, and he had to move in a flash. He dodged fissures, the scattered scabs of dirt fell on his body. A doom's hum hunted him like some beast, set to swallow him whole in one bite.

A spine-tingling moment of terror made him wildly thrash as a deluge of falling rocks cascaded down above him; he insanely leaped, twisting his body just in time to avoid the deluge and landed over a broken chasm with a loud thud on solid earth, the arms and legs momentarily paralyzed by the burst of survival adrenaline.

[Ding! Mission Accomplished. Exp +10.]

Kai rolled onto his back for an instant, heaving and struggling to catch his breath. A gritty taste filled his mandibles as he looked up at the light from the tunnel entrance.

"If that's the first one, then the second task..." he groaned, wincing and pushing himself upright.
