Rebirth before Apocalypse: My Whole Family are Bigshots!-Chapter 20: I Saw You in My Dreams
"Wow! This luxury car must be worth millions!"
"Look at the old man’s garbage truck, just a scratch! The luxury car is totaled!"
People on the road gathered to watch, occasionally pointing at the luxury car and the green garbage truck.
The elderly man driving the garbage truck was unharmed, simply bending over to pick up the trash.
Bai Xiqin saw the scattered trash and bent down to help.
Leng Yebai saw Bai Xiqin helping and bent down to help as well.
"Young man, do I need to compensate you for this car?"
The old man asked Leng Yebai again for confirmation.
He couldn’t afford to pay for this car!
His most valuable possession was the green environmental garbage truck, and even that belonged to the state.
"No need!" Leng Yebai suppressed his inner delight and tried to speak in a calm tone, "Are you hurt, sir? If you are, I can take you to the hospital for treatment."
"No, I’m fine!"
The old man waved his hand energetically.
The kind bystanders also helped pick up the garbage, and soon the entire road was clean.
The traffic police arrived; Leng Yebai was found fully responsible. Since the old man didn’t hold him accountable, the police just deducted points and fined him.
Seeing that it had nothing to do with him anymore, the old man calmly drove his garbage truck, with large "Environmental" letters on it, away into the sunset.
The green garbage truck’s large "Environmental" label looked impressive, despite being dirty.
Bai Xiqin and Leng Yebai listened to the traffic police’s admonishments, then waited for the towing truck.
"Xiao Niu? What are you doing here?"
A sunny and handsome boy appeared in front of Bai Xiqin, smiling at her.
Bai Xiqin was slightly stunned by the sunny boy before her. It took her a moment to recognize him as Zhang Yiming, a classmate.
According to Bai Xiqin’s timeline, she hadn’t seen her classmates for three years.
"I was shopping and a little accident happened."
Bai Xiqin smiled warmly at the boy in front of her.
"Are you okay?"
Zhang Yiming frowned as he looked at the wrecked black luxury car.
"I’m fine," Bai Xiqin replied.
"Have you finished your thesis?"
Zhang Yiming, seeing no injuries on Bai Xiqin, finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"What thesis?" Bai Xiqin was a bit confused.
"Your thesis topic is the digital frequency counter! Did you forget?"
Zhang Yiming found it amusing seeing Bai Xiqin’s bewildered expression.
She was always so scatterbrained, now she even forgot her thesis topic.
Bai Xiqin paused for a moment before realizing she was a senior. Even though seniors didn’t have to attend classes, they still had to write their thesis.
Her thesis topic was the design of frequency meters, but in the approaching apocalypse, thesis defenses had long been forgotten.
"I haven’t written it yet."
Bai Xiqin scratched her head, feeling a bit embarrassed.
With everything that had happened, she had long forgotten her original thesis choice.
"I have information on frequency meters. I’ll send it all to you later."
Zhang Yiming smiled warmly, his eyes twinkling.
"...Okay!"
Bai Xiqin agreed.
But her heart felt a mix of emotions; their cohort of students would never get the chance for a thesis defense.
"Xiao Niu, let’s go shopping!"
Leng Yebai suddenly suggested.
"And you are...?"
Zhang Yiming glanced at Leng Yebai, with a hint of panic in his eyes.
Could he be Xiao Niu’s boyfriend?
"I’m her uncle."
Leng Yebai responded with a cold face.
"Hello, Uncle!"
Zhang Yiming’s face instantly displayed a warm smile, polite and courteous.
Bai Xiqin: ...
"Let’s go!"
Leng Yebai looked at Bai Xiqin.
"I’m leaving!"
Bai Xiqin waved at Zhang Yiming and walked off with Leng Yebai.
Zhang Yiming smiled at Bai Xiqin as he stood there, watching her and Leng Yebai walk away into the distance.
After a while, a hint of regret flashed across Zhang Yiming’s face.
Why didn’t he say a few more words?
Zhang Yiming sighed, took out his phone to search for information on frequency meters, and studied it seriously.
Suddenly, a drop of blood fell onto the phone screen.
Zhang Yiming took out a tissue, wiped the phone screen clean, and then wiped his nose.
He stared at the blood on the tissue for a moment, then threw the blood-stained paper into the trash can.
He continued walking in one direction, quickly tapping his phone to save information about frequency meters.
His long eyelashes drooped down as he put the phone in his pocket, emitting a faint melancholic aura.
Meanwhile—
Leng Yebai and Bai Xiqin walked side by side on the road, his eyes always on her.
"What’s up?"
Bai Xiqin looked at Leng Yebai.
"You, you said you might be captured for experiments in three months?"
Leng Yebai’s eyes showed a hint of hope.
It was hearing Bai Xiqin say this that made him lose control and accidentally hit the garbage truck.
He thought maybe she knew him.
Bai Xiqin glanced at the pedestrians, lowered her voice, and asked, "Are you reborn?"
Maybe it was unwise to ask so directly, but Leng Yebai had saved her twice, making her feel safe.
For some reason, Bai Xiqin always felt he was trustworthy.
"Reborn?" Leng Yebai’s heart raced; he felt close to the truth.
"Are you?" Bai Xiqin asked again.
Leng Yebai’s heart raced fiercely; he suspected a possibility. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"Then are you...?"
Leng Yebai didn’t answer Bai Xiqin’s question but asked her instead.
Leng Yebai’s voice was slightly hoarse, his eyes fixed on Bai Xiqin.
"Of course." Bai Xiqin cheekily blinked at Leng Yebai, using a playful tone, "So you should listen to me and not go out at that time."
Leng Yebai met Bai Xiqin’s gaze. Even though she was joking, he almost accepted it as true.
Those dark eyes didn’t lie.
Leng Yebai suddenly grabbed Bai Xiqin’s hand and strode toward a nearby park.
Bai Xiqin instinctively wanted to pull her hand back, but Leng Yebai held her wrist tightly, not letting go.
"Uncle Leng, what’s up?"
Bai Xiqin was slightly puzzled.
"Bai Xiqin, call me Leng Yebai!"
Leng Yebai said firmly.
"Leng Yebai, what’s up?"
Bai Xiqin asked again.
Leng Yebai didn’t answer Bai Xiqin; instead, he led her to a park bench and pushed her down onto it.
"Don’t speak, just listen to me." Leng Yebai pressed Bai Xiqin’s shoulders, staring into her dark eyes, and spoke deliberately, "What’s your name?"
"Bai Xiqin! Didn’t I tell you already?" Bai Xiqin was perplexed.
"What’s your name?"
Leng Yebai’s voice was hoarse and low, just like when she had threatened self-destruction.
"Are you... reborn too?"
Bai Xiqin looked at Leng Yebai’s complex expression, her heart skipping a beat.
"I saw you in a dream."
Leng Yebai held Bai Xiqin’s shoulders; she could feel his fingers trembling.
"...And then?" Bai Xiqin swallowed.
It seemed like he knew her.
"You suggested we die together, and I said, okay." Leng Yebai continued without regard for whether Bai Xiqin understood. "My biggest regret in the dream was not asking your name sooner."
