Chapter 102: Chapter 099 Changing Image
Chapter 102 -099 Changing Image
“Aren’t you forgetting that we still have some prize money to collect?”
Jiang Yan slapped his forehead, “I actually did forget about that.”
It was mainly because it wasn’t something he was used to, receiving prize money from a school for the first time in both of his lives combined.
Because Song Jiawen scored top marks in the province, the Yunzhou Municipal Education Bureau gained considerable prestige, receiving an influx of resources and funds. The municipal government and the education bureau also awarded the top school, and even set aside ten thousand as a special reward for Song Jiawen.
The school then gave a sum of money to each of the students who had been admitted to Beijing University.
Teacher Gao had notified them to come to the school to collect it when they were free, but since reporters were always camped out at First Middle School waiting for Song Jiawen, the two of them had not gone yet.
But even with the extra prize money, it still might not be enough.
“Brother, we don’t have to start off with a storefront right away; how about I find a place near your school and set up a stall?”
Jiang Yan thought for a moment, “That’s the only option for now. Since you want to come along, we’ll figure it out once we’re there.”
Huang Mao finally felt a weight lift from his heart these last few days.
With the matter settled, Jiang Yan sat on a small stool and began to check each of the newly collected computers, while Huang Mao helped organize and take notes.
At 5:30, Song Jiawen came out of the bedroom, ready to cook some noodles.
Just then, a shout came from downstairs, “Jiang Yan, Xiaohuang…”
The voice sounded like Grandma Xu.
Jiang Yan and Huang Mao put down their work and went outside, peering downstairs first to see Grandma Xu waving at them, “Come down quickly, you two go to the pavilion, Grandpa Xu and the others are waiting for you there.”
Without knowing why, they obediently went downstairs to the small pavilion behind the community pond.
Professor Xu and several old men were gathered around a stone table, fidgeting with some items. As the two approached, Professor Xu beckoned Huang Mao, “Xiaohuang, sit here.”
Obediently taking a seat, Huang Mao asked curiously, “Grandpa Xu, what are you…?”
Professor Xu chuckled, “Didn’t you say you wanted to go to Beijing with Jiang Yan? But he didn’t agree, right? Let me tell you, Xiaohuang, you need a change of image, otherwise Jiang Yan won’t be able to take you with him.”
An old man with white hair nodded in agreement, “That’s right, needs a change.”
He then picked up a pair of scissors from the table, snipping at the air twice, and remarked admiringly, “Not bad, well sharpened.”
Professor Xu picked up a razor, turning to the white-haired man and asked, “Old Chen, do you go first or do I?”
“Of course, I go first. It’s scissors before razors, you step aside.”
With that, Old Chen shakily stood up and shuffled behind Huang Mao.
Huang Mao looked at him with a face full of terror, “Grandpa Chen, what… what are you going to do?”
“What am I going to do? Didn’t I say I’m going to change your image? Turn your head around.”
After saying this, he muttered under his breath, “I’ve always found your wild hair an eyesore. Why do you need to dye your perfectly fine hair in all these colors, to make yourself stand out, right?”
Huang Mao, gazing at the shiny scissors in his hand, swallowed hard. Glancing at Old Chen’s still trembling hand, he nearly cried.
Is this… a haircut or a decapitation?
Huang Mao wanted to run, but Professor Xu and another old man were holding his shoulders down; he was afraid if he jerked suddenly, he might knock them both over.
Amidst his hesitation, he heard the scissors above his head snip twice, followed by strands of yellow hair fluttering down before his eyes, some even landing on his nose.
Huang Mao watched the faint yellow hair at the tip of his nose with distress; he had spent thirty-eight yuan to dye it, and just like that… it was gone?
Once the cutting started, the snipping sound didn’t stop; it seemed as if half his hair was gone in one go before he heard Old Chen exclaim, “Oh dear, these cuts are a bit too short now, can’t really style it anymore.”
Another elderly man sneered, “Talking about style, you should put on your glasses and take a good look. It’s like it was gnawed by a dog. And you still have the nerve to brag that you’re only a little worse than the professionals?”
Put on glasses?
You’ve been snipping away for half a day and don’t remember you’re not wearing glasses?
Professor Xu, holding a razor with a beaming smile, said, “No worries, if he didn’t do a good job, I’m still here, right? I’ll shave it nicely for him.”
Huang Mao didn’t even want to look at the razor in his hand anymore, shave it nicely? Could you possibly shave out a style?
Forget the style; he was only hoping that the old gentlemen would have mercy and not cut his hair too short so that he could go to a hair salon to get it re-dyed later.
After Grandpa Chen finished cutting, the other elderly men put on their reading glasses to inspect the dog-chewed hairdo and then expressed their disdain for Grandpa Chen’s work; next, Professor Xu stepped up with the razor.
After another round of struggle, a perfect… bald head appeared.
Jiang Yan sat on the stone steps of the pavilion, almost dying of laughter.
“Ah, look, doesn’t this look refreshingly neat?”
The other professors looked at Professor Xu speechlessly; how could it not be neat? There wasn’t a single hair left.
Still saying you could shave out a style, is this your version of styling?
But Huang Mao knew nothing of this yet. His face and neck were covered in hair clippings, and he didn’t dare touch his head for fear of ending up with a handful of hair, thinking it better to just go home and take a shower.
“Let’s disperse, it’s time to go home for dinner.”
“I told you they were boasting, but you wouldn’t believe me.”
“I thought at least he could cut a crew cut.”
“It is quite the ‘cut,’ isn’t it?”

“Xiaohuang, you should keep this style from now on, it suits you much better than your previous haircut.”
The last comment was made by Professors Chen and Xu together. Although the final look wasn’t the result of Professor Chen’s scissor work, his earlier efforts were undeniable. Consequently, he could only reluctantly join Professor Xu in the praise.
As Huang Mao thought, I’m not deaf; didn’t I just hear what the other grandpas said? You two think I didn’t hear?
He returned home, listlessly accompanying Jiang Yan. As soon as he entered his house, he darted into the bathroom, then a scream erupted, “Ah…”
Song Jiawen heard the yell and rushed out of the bedroom in alarm. Seeing the bathroom door open, she immediately spotted Huang Mao’s shiny bald head.
Song Jiawen: …
She didn’t know what had happened yet, but still opened her mouth to praise, “This haircut is good; you won’t get lice or prickly heat, and it’s cool.”
Huang Mao glared at her and slammed the door shut, roaring from inside, “No one is allowed to call me Xiaohuang anymore, I’ll lose it with anyone who does!”
…..
The next day, when Huang Mao went out to get his computer, he ran into Grandma Xu downstairs, carrying a watermelon in one hand and a shopping basket in the other.
“Xiaohuang? Oh my, why do you have a shaved head?”
Huang Mao: …
He said with a slight sense of grievance, “Grandpa Xu shaved it.”
Grandma Xu immediately changed her tune and praised, “This is much better, cool. Look at your Grandpa Xu’s skill, the old hand is still as skilled as ever, so evenly shaved.”
Huang Mao: …
Sulking, he took the watermelon and shopping basket from Grandma Xu’s hands, trudged up to her doorstep to deliver them, then turned around and ran off like the wind.
