Chapter 53 -53 Got it wrong
Mei Yinan’s words were polite, but her hands were not as they unceremoniously took the vegetables that Fan Tianyu had brought back.
Fan Tianyu was speechless, “That’s enough, these were what Zhenzhen asked me to bring over. She went and dragged two carts of vegetables back, one cart of vegetables and meat and the other cart full of fruit.”
The couple was taken aback, and Fan Hongwei asked, “We went to the market this morning, but the vendor wasn’t out yet. It’s madness there, every day there’s a bunch of people surrounding the area trying to find that vendor, but no one can quite figure out who it is. I’ve only heard it’s a high school student, but with no name and no mention of which high school, where are we supposed to look?
Hearing this, Fan Tianyu felt a strange sensation inside, but couldn’t quite pinpoint what was odd about it. Since he couldn’t figure it out, he stopped thinking about it, “I guess she went to the vendor’s house to get them. Zhenzhen said that person is really weird, only sells vegetables to her, so she brought back two large crates of them. I just towed her cart into their house, and she immediately asked me to deliver these to you. Mom, you better sort these vegetables quickly. It’s hot and there’s meat, don’t let it spoil.”
The meat was so delicious, it would be such a waste if it spoiled.
Mei Yinan quickly took the vegetables into the kitchen, sorted them out, bagged them, and stuffed them into the refrigerator. When she finally came out of the kitchen, she had time to ask, “You just brought these back, did you pay for them? Those vegetables from that household aren’t cheap. Our family can’t afford to let Zhenzhen foot the bill for our meals.”
“I didn’t, I was actually planning to give all of my last month’s salary to Zhenzhen the day I leave. I have 2800 from my wages, I haven’t spent a cent, there should be some left, but I haven’t done it since I’m not leaving yet,” Fan Tianyu explained as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Mei Yinan didn’t understand, “Even if you’re not leaving, you can still give it to her. This way, they’ll think you’re freeloading, don’t you feel embarrassed?”
“But I live there, and what if Zhenzhen doesn’t accept the money? That way, when I leave, I can just insist on giving it to her. She’ll have to take it even if she doesn’t want to. I think that’s better.”
Fan Hongwei cast a glance at his son, “So you’re living there without any sense of burden because of that, right?”
“Hehe, but Chenchen is starting school tomorrow, and I haven’t left yet, so I plan to go with Mom to take Chenchen to kindergarten. I’ll do the pick-ups and drop-offs while I’m here.”
He hadn’t had the chance to talk to his family about the morning’s events yet. He came back this time intending to give a brief explanation, “My startup fell through before, and now I’m out of a job. I’m thinking of adjusting my state of mind and deciding whether to look for a job or to start something on my own.”
Fan Hongwei had no objections, “Alright, as long as you have your own plans and ideas, that’s good. It doesn’t matter if the startup failed, just make sure you don’t live carelessly.”
Mei Yinan asked, “Do you have enough money? You’re planning to give your salary to Zhenzhen, but if you do, you won’t have a penny left to go out with.”
“I’ve been working for more than just this one month, I still have a bit of money left, but not much.” Besides, he hadn’t yet decided what he wanted to do, there was no rush.
Mei Yinan murmured to herself, “Okay, just a moment.” After saying that, she went back to her room and rummaged through the wardrobe before returning to the living room, holding a stack of red bills in her hand.
Mei Yinan counted out the bills, one by one, until she had five thousand yuan which she handed to Fan Tianyu, “This money was originally intended for you anyway, but I hadn’t planned on giving you this much. But since you, as a brother, have a conscience and know better than to just freeload, I’ve decided that you should give three thousand to Zhenzhen and keep the remaining two thousand for yourself.”

Mei Yinan’s calculations were clear. Finding a job could be easy or difficult, there were plenty of jobs, but good ones weren’t so easy to come by. For now, Fan Tianyu was still thinking about future development, but how long that would take was uncertain. His son had a big appetite, Mei Mengzhen’s vegetables weren’t cheap, and on top of that, he had brought them vegetables, plus there were occasional meals at their place. The three thousand yuan she was able to give was all right, but whether it was enough, well, for the time being, it was. If his stay got prolonged, they could always add more money. In any case, they wouldn’t let Mei Mengzhen lose out on the deal, and it would also cover some of their expenses.
Needless to say, Fan Hongwei understood Mei Yinan’s thoughts, and he felt that his wife’s approach this time was very good. As for Fan Tianyu, they needn’t worry too much. Although the boy was unreliable, he wasn’t without a sense of responsibility; he would surely think things through before deciding what to do next.
Having delivered the vegetables and received the money, Fan Tianyu left to go back.
The lunchtime beef had indeed made her crave beef, and so, a tomato beef nan pot was promptly arranged.
One meat dish, plus one vegetarian dish, was enough for the three of them to eat their fill.
The tomatoes in the tomato beef nan had been simmered into a thick, tangy and sweet sauce, perfect for mixing with rice. They had finished the rice they previously had, so today’s rice came from the space, grown and processed, and cooked with Spiritual Spring Water. You can imagine how delicious the rice was.
It had been a while since the siblings had eaten with Fan Tianyu, and they ended up with overstuffed bellies. The three of them went out to the front yard to walk around and help with digestion.
As they paced back and forth, Fan Tianyu suddenly stopped and pointed ahead, with a confused expression, he asked, “Zhenzhen, I always feel like there should be something here, but I just can’t remember what it is. Wasn’t there something placed here before?”
Mei Mengzhen followed the direction Fan Tianyu was pointing, which was none other than where the Osmanthus Tree used to stand. Naturally, there had been something there. Before, Mei Mengzhen found it strange that the large Osmanthus Tree in the front yard had disappeared and not a single person in the house had mentioned it. Though it was odd, she hadn’t asked as it was a difficult topic to broach. So, it seemed that with the disappearance of the Osmanthus Tree, the memory of it had vanished from everyone’s minds as well. The Osmanthus Tree truly was a miraculous existence.
“There was never anything here. You must have remembered it wrong,” Mei Mengzhen could only explain it this way.
Fan Tianyu frowned, “No, I’m sure there used to be something big here, otherwise why would I instinctively avoid this spot when taking a stroll? But why can’t I remember anything about it?”
Mei Mengzhen explained hurriedly, “That means you’re mistaken, this is what’s called the Mandela Effect.”
Fan Tianyu was baffled, “What’s the Mandela Effect?” He had never heard of it.
Mei Mengzhen grew even more anxious, she had blurted out without thinking, but the Mandela Effect would only gradually enter the public eye in 2010, with its formal naming occurring in 2013. With so many similar events, it had reverberated for many years, which is why Mei Mengzhen remembered it so vividly.
But for now, this effect was definitely premature, “It’s just a memory disorder, simply put, you remembered it wrong.”
