Chapter 79 -79: Settling Accounts (1/3)
They hadn’t been selling vegetables for long when their store opened, which made their financial situation quite tight. Fortunately, they didn’t have to pay up front for the vegetables, which was a relief for Tianyu, who worried they might not be able to afford the cost.
While they were busy with renovations, they didn’t forget to promote their vegetable sales. Once everything was ready, it was natural to have a prosperous opening.
Opening the store meant more vegetables, and even though Tianyu’s wallet was nearly empty, he wasn’t discouraged at all and worked even harder to transport the goods.
However, the staff never expected a vegetable store to do such good business.
When they arrived, they questioned who would buy such expensive vegetables and speculated that the store might close down in a couple of days. They even worried about having to find a new job soon. But everything turned out to be surprisingly different, and they were so busy from morning until closing time that they had no time to chat.
The business was booming, and Tianyu was constantly hauling goods, but it wasn’t quite as busy as it had been at the vegetable market. Tianyu understood it was a new location and people needed time to adapt and discover the place. Additionally, he had increased the supply, but even so, everyone was so busy they didn’t have time to eat lunch.
The busiest place was the cashier’s desk, which never stopped for a moment. The amount of money taken in was emptied from the register several times, and eventually, Tianyu had to step in and let each staff member take a lunch break.
Clearly, they were short-staffed, and a hiring sign was posted on the door once again. By the end of the day, the store’s staffing, now at seven, was considered sufficient.
There was only so much produce to sell each day. With everyone working from 9 am, they could usually finish by 3 to 4 pm, count the money, and then close the shop.
The staff couldn’t believe their good fortune and were somewhat incredulous, “Boss, are we getting off work now?”
“Of course, we’re closing. We’re out of vegetables to sell. Every day is the same; once we sell out, we close up.”
Finishing work early was an enticing prospect; even if they were tired, selling out meant they could head home sooner.
With the shop door closed, the day’s business officially ended.
While the staff were secretly delighted, the truly elated ones were Tianyu and Mengzhen. Finishing early meant Tianyu still had to pick up Mengchen, and after bringing her back, he immediately went to the bank to deposit money, a task that had become a daily necessity. Otherwise, the high business volume would require even more time the next day.
It wasn’t until Mengzhen got home that she learned they had sold 115,000 yuan worth of vegetables in just one day. Do you realize what that means? A daily income of 115,000 yuan meant 3.45 million yuan a month. A monthly income of a million was no longer a dream but a tangible reality. For someone fresh out of university like him, such a fortune seemed unattainable, but now it was what he was actually achieving.
Tianyu was somewhat intoxicated with the feeling and suddenly declared, “I suddenly feel so great.”
“What did you do to feel so great?” Mengzhen said, both laughing and crying.
“I’m making money! I’m making so much right after graduating. Isn’t that great?”
“You really should get out more, see the world, and read more books. Tianyu, please don’t ever say something like this outside, understand?” It was embarrassing, genuinely embarrassing, not just jokingly so.
Tianyu glanced at Mengzhen and replied, “I was just talking. You took it seriously. It’s just unbelievable to me. I thought someone like me, from this kind of family, would never make so much money in my life, but now it has actually happened.”
“Tianyu, I really don’t want to burst your bubble, but you’ve only just started making money. It hasn’t even hit your pocket yet and you’re already like this. If you really make that much, can you handle it? Will your mind still function normally?”
“Why do I feel like your words are even harsher than Tianhua’s?”
Mengzhen pouted her lips but didn’t continue to object.
In short, business at Fan Dian was good, but whether it could continue to be this stable was anybody’s guess.
…
A month flew by quickly, and in early November, Mengzhen faced her first midterm exams in senior year. Tianyu deliberately postponed balancing the accounts for a few days to accommodate the exams. Mengzhen took the midterms very seriously as they were a chance to validate her learning over the past two months. She felt the pressure to perform well, to justify the nights she’d stayed up studying.
So, she approached the midterms with even more caution than usual.
The exams, covering language, math, foreign language, and comprehensive science, were completed in two tight days. The tight schedule unexpectedly resulted in two extra days off for the week and no homework.
Everyone was thrilled at the sudden stroke of luck, bolting out of class at the bell, fearing they might be called back and assigned homework.
…
The belated autumn wind blew desolately, scattering the leaves on the street trees and losing its gentleness and warmth. Drizzles of rain wove through the air, bringing a gradual chill.
Meanwhile, a short, stocky man with a protruding belly tucked his hands into his jacket pockets and hurriedly made his way into a lottery shop.
After a while, he arrived at the doorway, adjusted his glasses on his nose, zipped up tighter, and left at a brisk pace.
…
Mengzhen didn’t waste a minute after her exams, taking advantage of the lack of homework to clean the house, wash the bedsheets, and continue performing her farming tasks in the space after everyone had gone to bed. Since she didn’t have school the next day and there was no homework, she worked through the night, restocking Tianyu’s Garage and then rejuvenating herself with a drink of Spiritual Spring Water, ready to go without sleep.

As the temperature dropped, Mengchen had grown taller over the past two months, outgrowing her old clothes. Now with money earned, Mengzhen was not going to skimp on new clothes, and early the next morning, she suggested going shopping.
Sure, that was fine. Tianyu said, “No need to rush. Once I’m done delivering the goods, I’ll drive you, and we can pick up my parents too. I’ll buy them a few things. Take the chance this morning to do the accounts; we’re due to pay wages mid-month and if you don’t do it this week, we won’t be able to pay next week.”
Mengzhen had no objection, “Sure, you don’t even have to remind me. That’s what I was planning to do.”
With that settled, Tianyu spent the whole morning dragging in the goods, trying to get everything done. Meanwhile, Mengzhen wasn’t idle either; she took the opportunity to finalize the accounts from the previous month.
