Chapter 42 - 31 Chu Guodong

"Hello, we found you on the road yesterday and brought you back. You're now at our place,"

"Rest assured, we are all good, upstanding people," Uncle Zhang, as the building coordinator, chose his words carefully as he replied to the man, taking care not to reveal any identities.

"Here you go," Yin Meng handed a cup of water to Zhong Junfeng through the crowd, to moisten the man's throat. It wasn't hot, as in this weather, any boiled water would turn into ice water soon enough, and they didn't want to waste fuel. As long as it wasn't frozen, it was drinkable.

"Thank you," the man took the cup and took a sip, feeling his parched throat get some relief. His eyes were filled with gratitude.

Seeing the man's polite and righteous appearance, everyone present heaved a sigh of relief; he didn't seem like a bad person.

After drinking a few more sips and feeling his throat less sore, the man spoke up, "Thank you all for saving me. I am a soldier from the 532nd Rescue Unit, Chu Guodong. May I ask where I am now?"

Hearing the man, oh no, Chu Guodong, claim he was a soldier, everyone felt a bit more at ease. Once again, Uncle Zhang responded, "City C."

Uncle Zhang stealthily gave Song Zhao a look, hoping Song Zhao would catch his meaning. Unfortunately, Song Zhao was still assessing the man and missed Uncle Zhang's cue entirely. Even if he had caught it, he wouldn't know what Uncle Zhang intended; his tacit understanding was only with his wife.

Observing everyone carefully, Chu Guodong noticed Uncle Zhang's subtle gesture but also had no clue what the man intended.

He was in their hands now, with injuries that felt quite serious, and it was inconvenient to move. He could only leave it up to fate.

"Dad, what's wrong with you, got a twitch in your eye?" Zhang Qian turned her head and saw Uncle Zhang repeatedly winking, and bluntly asked.

Uncle Zhang's face turned red, and he slapped Zhang Qian's head, feeling the awkwardness of being caught making secretive gestures in front of others. And this daughter of his, so unable to read the room, was driving him mad.

The interaction between father and daughter had Chu Guodong struggling to suppress a laugh.

"Since you say you're a soldier, do you need our help contacting the relevant government departments? City C is actually in the middle of conducting a population registry, and we need to register your identity," since he'd been caught already, Uncle Zhang decided to be direct and asked outright.

"Is that possible? That would be great. Could you please help me contact either the Mayor of City C, or the Party Secretary, or even the police station would do," Chu Guodong started hesitating when he mentioned the Party Secretary, considering that ordinary people might not easily have access to high-level leaders, so he added the police station as an option.

"Xiao Lin, Gao Zhi, could I trouble you two to make a trip for us, to the Songshan District Government, to ask around?" Uncle Zhang looked over his group and decided it would be best to have Gu Yanzhi and family, who had the highest fighting capabilities, remain here.

He called upon two young and strong individuals, who also happened to be among the most capable in terms of combat from their group, to go. They agreed without hesitation and left.

They could only try to ask someone who was in charge of distributing supplies today, but there were many soldiers there, so they should be able to find the person Chu Guodong wanted to meet more easily.

Chu Guodong didn't oppose; as long as he could get in touch with government officials, he had ways to prove his identity.

During the wait for Gao Zhi and Xiao Lin to return with someone, everyone continued to chat with Chu Guodong. They learned that Chu Guodong was on a mission to survey the situation in City C.

After the flood outbreak, the country had established many rescue units to handle the relief efforts nationwide. Only City C had remained inaccessible.

The army had been gradually sending out several rescue teams since over two months ago, all without return. Chu Guodong had come on this mission prepared to die and hadn't expected to be rescued.

However, he still had several teammates whose conditions were unknown. At this, Chu Guodong's brow furrowed, clearly worried about his comrades.

For now, he could only wait for Xiao Lin and Gao Zhi to return with government officials before he could start searching for them.

As part of the casual conversation, Chu Guodong also learned that the torrential rains had ended and the outside temperature had dropped to below minus 50 degrees Celsius. Hearing about the sub-50-degree chill, Chu Guodong silently lamented in his mind no wonder he still felt a bit cold despite the many layers.

The vortex outside City C had disappeared, and national government officials had already entered City C to commence a variety of tasks.

When Chu Guodong had entered the vortex, it was around eleven or twelve at midnight, just as the severe cold was about to set in, at the very transition between the downpour and the extreme cold. Perhaps that was the reason he had survived. If his guess was correct, his teammates would also be alive, waiting for him to find them.

What puzzled him, though, were the wounds on his body, which seemed quite strange; surely no one had stabbed him while he was unconscious.

"Boss, I finally found you; I thought you were dead," Xiao Lin and Gao Zhi returned with a few people in military uniforms. One of them immediately pounced onto Chu Guodong and started howling, accidentally pressing on Chu Guodong's wound, causing him to grunt in pain.

Chu Guodong slapped the man's head sharply, "Get the hell off me, I'm not dead yet, you're about to crush me to death."

"Ah, oh, sorry," realizing his strength, Chu Guodong tried to push Zhao Rui away, but Zhao Rui's grip was too tight. An attempt to push him off backfired, making the wound ache even more, until their teammates, unable to bear watching, pulled Zhao Rui off.

Realizing what he had done, Zhao Rui awkwardly scratched his head and gave a not-so-sincere apology.

"Alright, let's have a doctor check on the Captain first," the man who pulled Zhao Rui aside stopped the chattering teammates and stepped aside, allowing the doctor behind them to come forward.

"Who treated these wounds? They've done quite a good job," the doctor quickly approached to examine Chu Guodong. Upon Chu Guodong removing his clothes, the doctor praised the well-bandaged wounds.

In no time, the doctor finished examining him. Whoever had attended to Chu Guodong's wounds had been very careful, and he had been well taken care of afterward; there were no serious issues, and regular dressing changes and rest should suffice.

After the examination, the doctor yielded the space to the group of soldiers and went out to the living room, wanting to inquire who had treated Chu Guodong's wounds.

When Xiao Lin and Gao Zhi returned with people, everyone conveniently stepped out, leaving the bedroom to the group representing the nation.
