Chapter 16 - 16 Zhang Lei

Senior High School Class 10, first day of class.

Tang Yue chose a corner seat and looked at these once-familiar faces. Decades had passed, and she could no longer recall most of their names; they were just vague impressions in her mind.

Xu Zhenzhen and Tian Tian sat in the center.

Before long, their English teacher, who was also their homeroom teacher, arrived—Qin Hong, in her forties, with a very delicate appearance and an exceptionally pleasant voice.

During self-introductions, Qin Hong not only introduced herself in Chinese but also made a special point of introducing her name in English. She said with a smile, "From now on, I'll be your English teacher, as well as your homeroom teacher. Please, everyone, when introducing yourselves, do the same as me: first introduce your name in Chinese, then repeat it in English."

After Qin Hong's words, she gestured for them to start introducing themselves from left to right.

"Hello everyone, my name is Zhang Ting." Zhang Ting was a very cute girl. After her Chinese introduction, she repeated it in English. Since it was the first time, her English introduction was clearly a bit halting.

Qin Hong offered a few comforting words before signaling for the next person to go.

They had all started learning English in junior high school, but there weren't many who dared to speak boldly, and most of their English pronunciation was far from standard.

"Hello everyone, my name is Wu Xianhua."

"..."

One by one, it was Xu Zhenzhen's turn. She was bold, and though her English pronunciation wasn't perfect, her voice was loud and clear.

On the side, Tian Tian seemed quite inferior by comparison.

Meanwhile, Tang Yue noticed Zhang Minmin—her English pronunciation was quite fluent and relatively standard.

"Hello everyone, my name is Zhang Lei."

The sound of Zhang Lei's self-introduction came like a key to Pandora's box, instantly unlocking memories of the past.

"Zhenzhen, I've never even spoken to Zhang Lei, how could I possibly be passing love letters?"

"Zhenzhen, what should I do? If I get expelled for puppy love, my mom will definitely kill me."

At that time, Tang Yue was bizarrely accused of puppy love with someone she didn't even speak to.

Yet, how could it be possible for Tang Yue to receive so many love note slips from a classmate she had never even spoken to, all suggesting puppy love?

Just thinking about possibly being expelled, or having her parents called in for a meeting at school, her heart would plunge into a state of chaotic panic.

"Don't worry, Xiao Yue, I will help you." Back then, Xu Zhenzhen was like the best friend anyone could have, shielding her from the storm, and later, the puppy love incident gradually calmed down after Xu Zhenzhen and the homeroom teacher "fought" for her.

At that time, Tang Yue was full of gratitude.

Afterward, she dared not revisit the incident, and even when recalling it by chance, it was only with gratitude toward Xu Zhenzhen.

But now, seeing Zhang Lei again, she suddenly felt there was something odd about the whole situation.

She clearly hadn't passed any love notes to Zhang Lei, so why was she accused of puppy love?

Where did those love notes come from?

Tang Yue suppressed the doubts in her heart and her gaze fell on Zhang Lei. At 1.7 meters tall, Zhang Lei was considered tall for a Senior High School student. He was lean and although his features were not particularly outstanding, he was neatly and attractively presented.

After his self-introduction had concluded, Tang Yue withdrew her attention, and saw that nothing seemed amiss with the time.

In the blink of an eye, it was Tang Yue's turn to introduce herself. Her bangs, which she had let grow out during the summer vacation, were tied up in a high ponytail, revealing her smooth forehead. Her eyes and brows showed confidence, and her self-introduction was simple, accentuated by her standard pronunciation and fluid English, which instantly impressed everyone.

After everyone had finished their introductions, it was time to distribute textbooks and elect class representatives.

Tang Yue's middle school examination results were above average, and because of her appearance and English introduction, many people recommended her for the class representative. However, in the end, the position still went to Zhang Minmin, but Tang Yue felt that some things had indeed changed.

Previously, she hardly interacted with others in the class except for being with Xu Zhenzhen, which made her almost invisible in the classroom.

"Such a pity, Tang Yue, that you're not the English class representative," Xu Zhenzhen came over 'specially' to console her.

But Tang Yue keenly detected a flash of schadenfreude in Xu Zhenzhen's eyes.

Tang Yue calmly replied, "It's nothing. I just want to focus on my studies."

Xu Zhenzhen was taken aback, not witnessing any anger from Tang Yue, but she felt that Tang Yue had indeed changed a lot. After being reminded by Tian Tian yesterday, Xu Zhenzhen took a closer look today and realized that Tang Yue actually seemed different.

Especially during the self-introduction in class earlier, Tang Yue's confident manner and the light smile at the corner of her mouth were both exceptionally eye-catching.

Tang Yue wasn't like this before.

Xu Zhenzhen looked at her suspiciously and asked, "Xiao Yue, you seem to have changed a lot. Before, you always hung out with me, from elementary school to middle school, we were always the best of classmates."

"Is that so?" Tang Yue countered, "People change. Haven't we always been good classmates? Isn't that still the case now?"

"But I always feel..." Xu Zhenzhen wanted to say more.

But Tang Yue had already started writing her name in her new books and even began to review her brand new English textbook. Even if Xu Zhenzhen wanted to continue speaking, she didn't find it proper to interrupt.

On the first day of school, there were hardly any formal classes. After cleaning the classroom, everyone returned to their dormitories or went to explore the new school.

After Tang Yue returned to her dormitory with her Chinese and English textbooks, Zhang Minmin couldn't hide her triumphant look.

"Minmin, your English has been the best since middle school, and you've always been the English class representative. Some people just overestimate themselves."

"Yeah, Minmin, you will always be the top performer in our class, and some people should be relieved that they're not the English class representative now."

Zhao Xiaoyue and Liu Fang took turns jeering at Tang Yue with a sneering tone.

Tang Yue acted as if she hadn't heard them, sat on the bed with her books, and started to review. Although she had studied these courses before, she had mostly forgotten them.

Since her rebirth, her memory had improved greatly. Not to the point of being photographic, but at least now, if she concentrated and memorized something twice, it would almost never escape her mind.

High school English wasn't that difficult. After Tang Yue attended the class carefully and consolidated what she learned, she could easily manage it. The challenging part was the other subjects.

Before, her performance in mathematics, physics, and chemistry was not very good; she had trouble remembering formulas and often confused them, and she had a major issue with bias toward certain subjects.

However, if she wanted to get into a good university in the future, such bias wasn't permissible. She refused to believe that, with her current memory, diligent study wouldn't lead her to mastery.

Xu Zhenzhen had invited Tang Yue out to play several times, but Tang Yue spent her time between the classroom, dining hall, and dormitory. Seeing her so focused on studying, Xu Zhenzhen couldn't help but say, "Tang Yue, school has just started. Can you not be all about books every single day?"
