Rebirth: Love in the Apocalypse-Chapter 157: Rescue Mission 2
Inside the research lab, a young man ran into and excitedly called an old man.
"Professor, there are people in the basement." The man shouted in an excited voice.
Hearing this, the old man was startled, and a hint of expectation flashed in his eyes.
"Is it the army?" The old man asked, but the young man shook his head.
The old man was Tang Cheng, a renowned academician in the field of aerospace aerodynamics.
As for the young man, he was Tang Cheng’s assistant and his name was Li San.
"It’s not the army." Li San said and began explaining.
"There is one man, three women, and a girl in the basement. However, they came in a group of more than two thousand. The rest are waiting outside the building."
For security purposes, the area around the research base was heavily monitored, and all the feed was collected in the lab’s surveillance room.
Fortunately, the lab had its own power system, hence the surveillance cameras were still operational more than one year after the apocalypse began.
"Do the others know?" Tang Cheng asked, and Li San shook his head.
"I came straight to you after seeing the surveillance."
Tang Cheng nodded when he heard this.
A moment later, he followed Li San to the surveillance room and checked the feed.
At this time, Lin Rongrong was pressing the doorbell.
"Professor, do we want to answer?" Li San asked, and after a moment of thought, Tang Cheng nodded.
"Answer." He said, left the surveillance room, and walked to the main door.
Soon after, they heard the doorbell, and Tang Cheng pressed the communication pad.
"Who is it?" The man asked.
"My name is Lin Rongrong, a member of Team Legends in the city B base." A female voice came through.
Tang Cheng and Li San exchanged a confused glance when they heard this.
Their research team was a special task force that was supposed to live in seclusion for three years to work on a certain problem.
However, almost a year ago, some people went crazy and began attacking others.
As a result, the researchers called for help and left the hidden base, intending to wait in the office building for the army to arrive.
However, they found that the situation outside was hundreds of times worse than the hidden base.
With no choice, they returned to the lab and dealt with the zombies.
It was also at this time that they realised that some people had awakened supernatural abilities.
However, the superpowers were too few and couldn’t deal with the zombies outside.
In the end, they decided to continue working while waiting for help to arrive.
One year passed in this way.
"We have been calling for help for a long time. Did the army send you?" Tang Cheng asked in a cautious voice.
Even though they needed help, he couldn’t just open the door to whomever arrived.
After all, his team’s research had national repercussions.
"Sir, the situation has changed. Do you want to talk face to face?" Lin Rongrong asked, but Tang Cheng was not convinced.
"What has changed?" He asked instead.
"The country and government are not as they used to be..." Lin Rongrong started and briefly explained the apocalypse.
Tang Cheng and Li San were horrified when they heard this.
"Is it true that ninety per cent of the human race has turned into zombies? Survivors are now living in bases, and the government has basically fallen?" Tang Cheng repeated, and Lin Rongrong couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the old man.
"You must have seen the zombies roaming outside."She said and continued without waiting for their reaction.
"Our city B base has only managed to reclaim a few thousand acres of living space. Zombies occupy the rest of the land."
"How far is the city B base from here?"
"A few kilometres, but the roads are impassable and there are zombies everywhere. We only managed to come this far because it’s winter and most of the zombies are frozen."
"Sister Lin, our research lab is a bunker. Isn’t it better to stay here than go to the base?" Li San asked, and Lin Rongrong chuckled before answering.
"You have been lucky. However, the zombies will evolve after the winter, and it will only be a matter of time before they find you. Also, all kinds of insects and organisms live within the earth. Do you really think your bunker will remain standing for much longer? "
"There is also the issue of food. This lab is out of the way, and there aren’t any supermarkets nearby. How will you keep yourselves alive without food and water?"
"Girl, what is it that you want from us?" Tang Cheng asked.
"Like I said, the base recently expanded and has devolved some power to nine factions. My Team Legends is one of those factions, and our captain is the leader of District eight." Lin Rongrong started.
"This time, we specifically came to rescue you in hopes that you will reside in our territory and become the backbone of our research team."
"How did you find us?" Tang Cheng asked.
"There are many interesting superpowers in the apocalypse. One of our ability users found you." Lin Rongrong gave a vague answer.
In fact, she also didn’t know the details.
All she knew was that someone used their ability to locate the research team.
"What if we don’t agree?" Li San asked.
This time, Lin Rongrong didn’t answer right away.
Instead, another voice spoke after a few moments of silence.
"My name is Qin Wu and I am the deputy leader of Team Legends." Qin Wu said and quickly continued.
"To answer your question, we will still rescue you. However, you have to pay for the service."
"You should also know that entering and living in the base requires supplies. Without enough supplies, you will live a miserable life and may even end up on the street."
"Have things changed so much?" Li San asked in a doubtful voice.
"It’s not uncommon for people to kill each other for a packet of noodles or half a bottle of water."
Hearing this, Tang Cheng and Li San exchanged a glance and nodded.
"We will give you an answer after we discuss with the others." Tang Cheng said.
"Winter is ending, and the zombies are beginning to wake up. We need to leave this place as soon as possible." Qin Wu reminded.
"We understand."
After that, Tang Cheng and Li San left the main door and walked towards the individual labs.
Without delay, they called the other researchers, and everyone gathered in a meeting room.
"Professor, is something wrong? Did you hear from the higher-ups?" Someone asked, and everyone looked at Tang Cheng with expectant eyes.
However, the old man sighed and shook his head.
After that, he revealed everything he had learned about the country and the apocalypse.
"Is this real?" Someone asked in a doubtful voice.
"We have all seen the zombies and know the virus is highly infectious. It’s not impossible for a large-scale outbreak to wipe out most of the population." Another said.
"What about our families and friends?"
The room fell silent when these words fell.
Everyone had relatives, friends, and colleagues.
Facing the possibility that their close ones may be dead, the researchers suddenly felt reluctant and afraid.
"Maybe the situation is not as bad as those people made it sound." Someone said in a low voice.
"It’s a fact that we are almost out of food and water. It’s also a fact that we haven’t heard from anyone in the past year. We have to consider the possibility that the world has really entered an apocalyptic era." A young man said.
The young man was Luo Zhan.
He was in his early twenties, wore thick glasses, and had an expressionless face.
"Professor Luo, you want to leave?" Someone asked, and Luo Zhan nodded.
"Will you join their research team?"
"I will."
"You will? How can you be so quick to decide?" Someone asked in a confused voice.
"If what they said is true, our only hope of continuing our research is by joining one of the factions or becoming a researcher in the base institute."
"However, among everyone, Team Legends is the one who found us, so I am willing to repay the favour by working in their research team."
"Professor Luo is right." A female researcher said.
"We have been waiting for one year, but only this group has come to rescue us. Working in their institute is a good way to repay the favour."
However, not everyone had the same opinion.
"My family is in city B. I think I will look for them first and see what they think. At worst, I will compensate Team Legends for rescuing me."
"I would like to join the institute, but I must first try to find my family in city T."
"My wife and kids are in city S."
In this way, the fifty seven researchers were divided into four groups.
One group would join team Legends, another would consult their family in city B, the third planned to leave city B and the final was dedicated to the government and planned to enter the base’s official research institute.
After deciding, everyone left the meeting room and started packing.
