Chapter 26: My heart aches

Mo Ran sighed as he stood up from the table, he could say he was one of the most successful men in the country and worldwide but when it came to relationships...it was a different case.

He had gotten to Lixue room within the blink of an eye, he leaned against the wall it was only a matter of time before she got tired of him,

"Lixue...come out. It’s time to go..."

Lixue opened the door and stepped out, her lemon-colored gown catching the morning light. The soft fabric clung delicately to her form, the slit at her leg revealing just enough to turn heads, and the ruffles along the slit added a dramatic elegance that made her look like she’d stepped out of a painting.

Mo Ran froze in place. His sharp, calculating demeanor softened as his eyes trailed over her. For a man who always prided himself on his self-control, this was a moment of rare vulnerability.

She noticed his stare and frowned, her cheeks heating up as her hand instinctively brushed down her gown. "Why are you staring at me like that?"

He blinked as if snapped out of a trance. Then, with a gentle smile, one that carried a warmth she had never seen before—not even in her previous life—he muttered, "I’m lucky." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

The words made her heart stutter. There was no teasing or mockery in his tone, no hint of his usual sharp wit. Just quiet sincerity that left her unsure how to respond.

Mo Ran sighed as he straightened up from where he’d been leaning against the wall. For all his success in the business world, when it came to relationships, he knew he was walking on unsteady ground. There was no manual for this, no strategy that could ensure success.

He led the way to the car waiting outside, holding the door open for her without a word. As they settled into the plush seats, the silence was thick with unspoken thoughts.

Mo Ran’s gaze flickered toward her. "Lixue..."

She turned, meeting his eyes. "What?"

He hesitated, his lips pressing into a thin line before he spoke again. "You’ll let me know if I ever—"

"Mo Ran," she interrupted, cutting him off with a sigh. "You’re acting strange today."

"I mean it," he insisted, his voice firm but not harsh. "If I ever do something you can’t forgive, promise me you’ll tell me first before walking away."

Lixue frowned, taken aback by the sudden seriousness in his tone. "Why would you even say that?"

Mo Ran looked out the window, the passing scenery reflected in his eyes. "Because I know myself, and I know I’m not the easiest man to deal with. I don’t want to lose you because I was too blind to fix what I could have."

The honesty in his words left her momentarily speechless.

"Mo Ran...are you dying? Why are you all sentimental?"

"I have heartache my dear wife....please make it go away..."

Mo Ran raised her hand to his chest, giving her his sad eyes.

Lixue’s lips twitched, and she struggled to suppress a laugh. "Heartache?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "From what? Being so dramatic first thing in the morning?"

Mo Ran’s hand covered hers, pressing it against his chest. His expression was exaggeratedly sorrowful, but there was an undercurrent of genuine emotion in his eyes. "It hurts," he said, his voice low and teasing. "Seeing you like this, knowing you’re too beautiful for your own good... It’s unbearable."

Lixue blinked, caught off guard. Her cheeks flushed, and she pulled her hand back quickly. "Stop playing around," she muttered, looking away to hide her embarrassment.

But Mo Ran only chuckled softly, leaning back in his seat. "Who’s playing? I mean every word."

"You’re ridiculous," she shot back, though her voice lacked its usual bite.

The car rolled smoothly to the city but the silence that followed felt heavier than before. Lixue turned her attention to the window, watching the buildings and trees blur past, her mind racing.

She didn’t know how to respond to him. He was joking, but at the same time, he wasn’t. His words felt like a riddle, layered with truths she didn’t dare untangle.

"Lixue," Mo Ran said softly, breaking the quiet.

She turned her head slightly, still not meeting his gaze. "What now?"

"I meant what I said," he murmured. "You’re breathtaking."

Her heart thudded in her chest, but she didn’t let it show. "Flattery doesn’t suit you, Mo Ran."

"I’ll keep trying until it does," he replied with a smirk, but his tone was far too gentle to match the arrogance he usually carried.

Lixue finally looked at him, her brow furrowed. "Why are you like this today? You’re being... strange."

Mo Ran’s expression softened again, the smirk fading into something quieter, more vulnerable. "Maybe I just wanted to remind myself how lucky I am," he said, repeating his earlier words.

Lixue’s breath caught, and she quickly turned back to the window, her reflection staring back at her. She didn’t trust herself to answer, not when his words felt like they were reaching deeper than they should.

The black car pulled up in front of Dream Entertainment’s grand entrance, the tinted windows shielding Lixue from the prying eyes of the crowd that had already gathered. She adjusted the delicate mask on her face, its subtle design blending seamlessly with her lemon-colored gown. Though she wasn’t a celebrity yet, Dream Entertainment’s reputation attracted attention.

At the back seat, Mo Ran’s expression was unreadable. He didn’t move to get out, instead leaning back slightly as his fingers tapped against the seat.

Lixue glanced at him, sensing his hesitation. "Aren’t you going to say something?" she asked, breaking the silence.

Mo Ran didn’t turn to her immediately. His gaze was fixed on the building ahead. After a moment, he finally spoke, his voice low. "If anything happens, call me. Immediately."

Lixue sighed, reaching for the door handle. "You worry too much. I’ll be fine."

"I’m serious, Lixue." His tone sharpened just slightly, enough to make her pause. "This industry can be unforgiving. If someone makes you uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to leave. I’ll handle the rest."

She turned to him, her hand lingering on the handle as her eyes searched his face. Beneath his composed exterior, there was something raw in his expression, something protective that she didn’t fully understand.

"You’re acting like I’m walking into a war zone," she said softly, a touch of teasing in her voice to lighten the mood.

"Maybe I am," he replied, his lips curving into a faint, almost reluctant smile.

Shaking her head, Lixue pushed the door open, letting the light flood into the car. Before stepping out, she turned back to him, her tone laced with quiet defiance. "I’m not someone who needs saving, Mo Ran. I can handle myself."
