Chapter 32: I’m finally finding my way

Yu Jia’s assistant finally returned with some information a while later, though it wasn’t what Yu Jia wanted to hear.

"Miss Yu," he began cautiously, "it seems Y.L. Mongolia’s connections are... tied to Mo Corporation."

Yu Jia’s blood ran cold. "What do you mean, Mo Corporation?"

The assistant hesitated. "There’s no direct evidence, but there’s speculation that Mo Ran himself might be involved in shielding her. If that’s true, any moves against her could—"

"I don’t care about Mo Ran," Yu Jia interrupted, though her voice faltered slightly. "What matters is her. Keep digging."

But deep down, her composure cracked.

Why would Mo Ran, her husband of less than a month, involve himself with Lixue’s affairs? Did he know the truth? Or worse—did he care for Lixue in a way he hadn’t cared before?

Yu Jia’s hands clenched at the thought. She had given up the marriage to Lixue to save herself, believing it to be a dead-end arrangement. If Lixue had somehow turned it into an advantage, it would be an unbearable twist of fate.

But what frightened Yu Jia more than anything was the possibility that Lixue wasn’t here for revenge or ambition.

She was here for justice.

Yu Jia’s chest tightened. If Lixue exposed the truth about her stolen songs and paintings, her entire career—her carefully crafted image—would crumble.

Her fame, her accolades, her reputation... all built on lies.

Yu Jia took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. She wasn’t powerless. She had connections, influence, and a ruthless streak that had served her well before.

If Lixue wanted a battle, Yu Jia would ensure it ended in her favor.

After all, she had more to lose—and she would protect it at any cost.

Lixue arrived at the hospital as dusk fell, the sky painted in soft hues of pink and orange. She barely noticed the city’s usual bustle, her thoughts entirely consumed by the woman in the hospital room she was about to visit.

The sterile scent of antiseptic hit her as soon as she walked into the hospital lobby. She moved quickly through the hallways, taking the elevator to the second floor. The familiar hum of the hospital’s buzz surrounded her, but it felt distant, as if she were in a different world entirely.

When she reached her mother’s room, Lixue paused at the door, her fingers briefly brushing over the handle. Her breath caught in her throat before she opened it.

Inside, the room was dimly lit, the soft beep of a monitor the only sound in the otherwise quiet space. Her mother laid down, frail and pale, a blanket draped over her thin form. The sight of her mother like this always tightened Lixue’s chest, but she swallowed the pain down, determined to stay strong.

She moved quietly to the side of the bed, setting down a bouquet of white lilies she had picked up earlier. They were her mother’s favorite. Taking a deep breath, Lixue sat gently on the edge of the bed, taking her mother’s hand in hers.

"Mom," she whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "I’m here."

Her mother’s eyes slowly fluttered open, blinking as she took in the figure beside her. Her gaze seemed unfocused at first, as if trying to make sense of the surroundings. Then, a slow smile curled on her lips, though there was no recognition in her eyes. "Are you... are you my daughter?" Her voice was soft and uncertain.

Lixue felt a lump rise in her throat, but she kept her tone steady. "Yes, Mom. It’s me, Lixue."

Her mother’s gaze lingered for a moment, before she shifted slightly, her confusion growing. "Lixue...?" she murmured, her eyes darting around as if searching for some sign of familiarity. "I’m sorry, I don’t remember... Who are you?"

Lixue’s heart clenched painfully. It wasn’t the first time her mother had failed to recognize her. The signs of Alzheimer’s had been showing for years, each visit leaving Lixue with a sense of helplessness she couldn’t quite shake.

"It’s okay, Mom," Lixue said softly, gently squeezing her hand. "I’m here for you. You don’t have to remember. I’m not going anywhere."

Her mother blinked, still lost in the fog of confusion, but she seemed to settle, her hand still weakly holding onto Lixue’s. "You’re very kind," she murmured, her voice wavering as she drifted in and out of awareness.

"Mom," Lixue whispered, her voice shaking. "I don’t know how much you can understand right now, but I need to tell you everything. I need you to hear me."

Her mother’s lips parted, but no words came out, only the soft, steady sound of her breathing. Lixue swallowed hard, her tears already threatening to spill, but she held them back, unwilling to let the tears take control.

"I... I made a decision, Mom," she said, her voice breaking with emotion. "I married Mo Ran again." She paused, her throat tightening as she tried to push past the weight of those words. "I know you don’t remember him, but I need you to know that I chose this. I chose him. After everything we’ve been through... I chose him because it was the right thing for me."

Lixue let out a shuddering breath, her hands clutching her mother’s, as if holding on for dear life. "It wasn’t supposed to be this way. I wasn’t supposed to marry him. It was supposed to be Yu Jia... but she didn’t want him. She pushed me to take her place, and I did. I thought I had to. I thought it was what everyone wanted." Her voice broke into a sob, and she quickly wiped her eyes, fighting to hold it together. "I’ve always done what they wanted, Mom. I’ve always been the one to take the burden."

Her voice wavered, and she looked down at her hands, trying to steady herself. "But now... now I’m telling you, it’s different. I’m not doing it for anyone else anymore. I’m doing it for me. I married him because... because I wanted to. I want to make my own choices, no matter how complicated they are. And, Mom... I don’t regret it. Not anymore."

Lixue’s chest tightened as the tears finally fell. She wiped them away angrily, but the floodgates had opened. "I’m not complaining, Mom. I’m just telling you that my life is slowly getting better. I’ve been given a second chance—after everything that happened, I’m finally finding my way."

She pressed her face into her mother’s hand, her sobs were quiet and desperate. "I’m not afraid anymore. I’m not afraid to live for myself. I’m doing things I never thought I could. I’m in Dream Entertainment now, and I’m not letting anyone push me down. I’ve been fighting so hard for so long... and I’m not going to stop. This time, it’s different."

Lixue took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but her heart was breaking. "I’m not asking for your forgiveness, Mom. I’m just telling you that I’m trying. I’m trying so hard. And I want you to know that I’m okay. I’m not falling apart this time. Not this time."

Her sobs quieted, but her heart felt like it was being torn apart. She leaned forward, pressing her forehead gently against her mother’s hand, a quiet, aching release. "I wish... I wish you could remember, Mom. I wish you could remember how strong you were for me. But I’ll keep going. I’ll keep fighting for you. Even if you can’t remember who I am, I’ll remember you. I’ll keep living for you, Mom."

For a long moment, there was nothing but the sound of Lixue’s breath and the steady, rhythmic beeping of the machines. Her mother’s hand was still warm in hers, and somehow, that warmth was enough to give her strength.

"I love you, Mom," Lixue whispered, her voice full of sorrow and resolve. "And no matter what happens, I’ll never stop trying. I won’t let you down."

Lixue stayed there for what felt like hours, her emotions raw and vulnerable, but with each passing moment, she felt a little lighter, as though finally sharing the truth was the first step toward healing.
