Rebirth: The New Bride Wants A Divorce-Chapter 568: Stop scaring your employees
Anna had no idea when she had fallen asleep.
One moment she had been sitting against the headboard, waiting for Daniel to return while scrolling absentmindedly through her phone, and the next thing she knew her eyes were opening again.
The room was still dim.
The bedside lamp cast a faint glow across the walls, and the curtains fluttered slightly with the night breeze.
Anna blinked slowly, trying to gather her senses.
Something felt... off.
Her eyes instinctively moved toward the other side of the bed.
Empty.
Daniel wasn’t there.
Anna frowned slightly as she pushed herself up and looked toward the clock on the bedside table.
It was still late at night.
"Did he not come yet?" she murmured under her breath.
Daniel had said the meeting would be quick.
Even if it had taken longer than expected, he should have been back by now.
A faint uneasiness settled in her chest.
She quickly grabbed her phone and dialed his number.
The call rang for a few seconds before the line abruptly cut off.
Anna stared at the screen.
Call failed.
"What the—"
She stopped herself from cursing and immediately tried again.
This time the phone didn’t even attempt to connect.
The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable.
Her frown deepened.
"That’s strange."
Daniel almost never turned his phone off. Even during meetings he kept it on silent rather than switching it off completely.
Anna tried calling again.
And again.
Each time the same response echoed from the phone.
Unavailable.
Now the uneasiness inside her chest was growing stronger.
"Where are you, Daniel..." she whispered quietly.
Just as she was about to try one more time, her phone suddenly vibrated in her hand.
Anna glanced down at the screen.
"Henry?"
Her brows knitted together in confusion.
Why would Henry be calling her at this hour?
For a brief second she assumed Daniel must still be busy with the client and had asked Henry to inform her.
Without wasting a moment, Anna answered the call.
"Henry, what kind of meeting takes this long? You people just—"
Her annoyed words stopped midway when she heard his voice.
"Madam..."
Henry sounded breathless.
Panicked.
There was none of his usual calm professionalism.
Anna’s irritation instantly faded.
"Henry?" she said slowly. "What happened?"
There was a brief silence on the other end before he spoke again.
"Madam... please don’t panic."
Anna’s fingers tightened around the phone, but whatever he said next made a cold chill run down her spine.
***
Anna had no idea how she had even managed to reach the hospital.
The drive there was a blur of red lights, honking cars, and the constant pounding of her heart against her ribs. Her mind had replayed Henry’s words again and again until the fear inside her felt unbearable.
By the time she rushed through the hospital corridors and pushed open the door of the room where Daniel had been taken, her hands were trembling.
But the moment she looked inside—
She froze.
Daniel was sitting on the examination bed, calmly talking to the doctor while the man carefully wrapped a bandage around his right arm.
He was smiling.
Smiling.
For a second Anna thought she might actually faint.
"Oh, Madam is here," Henry suddenly announced as he stood up from the chair in the corner.
The sudden movement made everyone turn toward the door.
Anna stood there, pale and breathless, looking like she was only a second away from collapsing.
"Anna?"
Daniel’s smile slowly faded when he noticed the dread on her face.
But before he could say anything else—
Anna rushed forward.
In the next second she threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
The suddenness of it left everyone in the room stunned.
Henry blinked.
The nurse froze.
Even the doctor paused mid-movement.
Daniel himself looked momentarily surprised, but then his expression softened as he gently wrapped his uninjured arm around her.
"It’s alright," he murmured softly.
For a few seconds Anna said nothing, simply holding onto him as if letting go might make him disappear.
Only when the doctor awkwardly cleared his throat did she suddenly realize what she had done.
Anna quickly pulled back, her cheeks slightly flushed.
"I... I’m sorry," she said quietly.
But even as she stepped back, her hand instinctively remained wrapped around Daniel’s.
"There is nothing to worry about, Mrs. Clafford," the doctor said reassuringly with a warm smile. "Everything is fine. It’s just a mild sprain. It should heal within a few days."
Anna nodded quickly, relief washing over her.
"Thank you, doctor."
After giving a few final instructions, the doctor left the room along with the nurse.
Henry, sensing the moment was no longer meant for him, quietly began inching toward the door.
If he moved slowly enough, maybe no one would notice.
Just one more step...
"Stop there."
Daniel’s voice cut through the room like a command.
Henry froze mid-step.
Slowly—very slowly—he turned around.
Daniel was staring at him with a perfectly calm expression.
Too calm.
Henry forced an awkward smile.
"Yes... boss?"
Daniel leaned slightly back against the bed, his gaze narrowing.
"Would you like to explain," he said coolly, "why my wife looked like she was about to pass out when she entered the room?"
Henry swallowed.
"Well... technically speaking... you were in an accident."
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"And?"
"And... accidents are... usually alarming?"
Daniel’s eyes narrowed further.
Henry immediately lifted both hands defensively.
"I only told Madam the truth!"
"The truth?" Daniel repeated slowly.
"Yes!"
"You told her I was in the hospital."
"Well... you are."
"You told her to come immediately."
"Well... you were here..."
Daniel exhaled sharply.
"Henry."
"Yes, boss?"
"If my wife had fainted in the hallway because of your dramatic announcement, I would have personally reassigned you to the warehouse department."
Henry’s eyes widened.
"The warehouse?!"
Before Daniel could continue his intimidating lecture, Anna quickly stepped between them.
"That’s enough," she said, though a small smile tugged at her lips.
She looked at Henry.
"Thank you for calling me."
Henry immediately looked relieved.
"You’re welcome, Madam."
Then Anna turned to Daniel and squeezed his hand.
"And you," she said softly, "stop scaring your employees."
Henry nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes, please listen to Madam, boss."
Daniel shot him a look.
Henry immediately cleared his throat.
"I mean... I should probably... go check on the discharge papers."
And before Daniel could say another word, Henry slipped out of the room as fast as possible.
The door closed behind him.
Inside the room, Anna finally exhaled and looked back at Daniel.
Only now did the fear in her chest truly begin to fade.
