Rebirth: The New Bride Wants A Divorce-Chapter 579: But the whole situation feels… wrong
As soon as Norma raised that question, Daniel slowly arched his brow.
"So you do realize this has something to do with the case," he said.
His tone was calm, but the sharpness behind his words was impossible to miss.
He leaned back slightly against the couch, his injured arm resting carefully on the armrest as his gaze remained fixed on her.
"But tell me something, Aunt Norma," he continued quietly. "Shouldn’t you have realized that before what happened to me?"
Norma’s fingers tightened subtly on the edge of the couch.
Daniel did not stop there.
"After all," he added, his voice turning colder, "the man indirectly linked to my parents’ death is the same man you chose to protect."
The words landed heavily in the room.
For the first time since he entered the living room, Norma shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
She knew exactly who he was referring to.
Collin.
Years ago, Roseline and Collin had been a couple. They even shared a child together before everything collapsed between them. Roseline’s betrayal had destroyed whatever relationship they once had. She had abandoned Collin and married Hugo Bennett instead.
What followed had been far worse.
Roseline had not simply left him. She had buried him.
One case after another had been filed against Collin until he was eventually thrown behind bars.
Norma had always believed that situation could work in her favor.
In her mind, Collin and the Bennetts shared a common enemy. If she pulled him to her side, she could use him to strike the Bennetts from the shadows without directly exposing herself.
It had seemed like a calculated move at the time.
But now, hearing Daniel’s words, a quiet doubt crept into her thoughts.
Had she made the right decision by bringing Collin to her side?
"Collin would never do something like that," she said sharply, trying to dismiss the possibility.
Daniel’s response was a soft chuckle.
The sound carried no humor.
"I never said Collin was behind this," he replied.
Norma’s eyes narrowed.
"Then what exactly are you implying?"
Daniel leaned forward slightly.
"I am simply reminding you," he said slowly, "that the man you have chosen to shelter will not hesitate to turn against you the moment it benefits him."
His gaze never left her.
For a brief second, the faint smile on his lips shifted into something darker. Something that made Norma instinctively hold her breath.
The room fell into silence.
Norma did not respond immediately, but Daniel knew his aunt well enough to understand that she was already processing every word he had spoken.
Norma Clafford had never been careless.
If anything, she was known for anticipating danger before it appeared.
And Daniel had just planted a seed of doubt she could not easily ignore.
Several moments passed before Norma finally spoke again.
"What do you suggest we do then?" she asked.
Daniel studied her expression before answering. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
"What have you decided, Aunt Norma?" he asked instead. "Are you going to apologize to the Bennetts?"
Norma’s gaze hardened slightly.
Daniel continued before she could answer.
"Because if you refuse," he said calmly, "the past will not remain buried."
His voice carried quiet certainty.
"The moment this conflict escalates further, the media will start digging into everything connected to both our families."
Norma understood exactly where his thoughts were heading.
"And we still have not proven my father innocent," Daniel finished.
The statement lingered in the room like an unspoken warning.
Daniel could have destroyed the Bennetts years ago if he truly wanted to.
He had the resources. The influence. The power to dismantle their empire in a matter of days.
But he had never chosen that path.
Back then, he had wanted something else.
He wanted to break them slowly.
Piece by piece.
He wanted the truth to surface layer by layer until every hidden crime came into the light.
But along the way, Daniel had realized something far more unsettling.
There was much more behind his parents’ deaths than what he had originally known.
And until he uncovered the full truth, he had no intention of ending the game too quickly.
Daniel watched Norma carefully as she suddenly rose from her seat.
For a moment her expression was unreadable, but there was a certain decisiveness in her eyes.
"I know what to do," she said.
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heels and walked toward the exit.
But just as she reached the hallway, she stopped.
Anna had just entered the mansion.
Anna slowed her steps when she noticed Norma standing there.
"Oh," she said lightly, stopping midway. "Am I interrupting another meeting again?"
The words carried a hint of teasing.
Anna could clearly remember the last time she had unknowingly walked into one of their tense discussions. That day, Norma had not hidden her irritation and had made it very clear that Anna should stay out of matters she did not understand.
But today was different.
Norma did not say a single word.
She simply walked past Anna as if she had not heard the remark at all and continued toward the exit.
Anna blinked in surprise as she turned slightly to watch her leave.
A moment later, she walked into the living room where Daniel was still seated.
She stopped near the couch, confusion still evident on her face.
"What was that?" she asked.
Daniel looked up at her calmly.
"How come I was not threatened this time?" Anna continued. "No warnings, no sharp remarks, nothing."
She walked over and sat beside him on the couch.
Daniel casually stretched his arm along the back of the couch behind her.
"Maybe she is afraid of you now," he said with a faint smile.
Anna turned her head toward him and narrowed her eyes.
"Or maybe," she replied slowly, "you told her something that made her change her mind."
Her suspicious gaze lingered on him.
Daniel simply smiled, offering no explanation.
Anna had gone to the hospital alone earlier.
She had made that decision deliberately.
Taking Daniel along would have only made the situation worse. Roseline was already emotional and unpredictable, and with reporters surrounding the hospital, any confrontation could easily turn into a public spectacle.
Anna had wanted to avoid that.
But now she was not so sure her caution had helped at all.
Roseline had still managed to create a scene in front of the media.
Daniel studied her expression for a moment before asking quietly, "So how is the situation there?"
He deliberately avoided answering her earlier question.
Anna let out a tired sigh and leaned slightly back against the couch.
"Something is wrong," she said.
Daniel turned his head slightly toward her.
"What do you mean?"
Anna’s gaze lowered for a moment as she gathered her thoughts.
"Dad would never hurt himself," she said firmly.
Daniel did not interrupt.
"That is what Katherine and I both believe," she continued. "We spoke about it at the hospital."
She paused briefly before adding, "He was perfectly fine the last time she met him."
Daniel’s expression grew more serious.
Anna continued explaining everything she had learned.
"The staff at the Bennett house said he was completely normal until the afternoon," she said. "He was going about his usual routine."
Daniel listened quietly.
"But then he had a conversation with Mom," Anna added.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"A private conversation," Anna clarified. "After that he went upstairs."
"And then?" Daniel asked.
"Then Mom started screaming," Anna replied.
Daniel leaned back slightly, his expression thoughtful.
"The staff rushed upstairs after hearing her," Anna continued. "That was when they found him unconscious."
Daniel remained silent for a moment.
Anna turned toward him again.
"Mom says he drank poison," she said slowly. "But the whole situation feels... wrong."
Her voice lowered slightly.
"It feels like something else happened in that house."
Daniel’s gaze darkened slightly.
Anna looked straight at him.
"I do not know what Mom is hiding," she said quietly.
"But I am certain she is hiding something."
