Chapter 108: State of emergency(4)

There was an unusual beat of silence on the line—Feng Yizhou wasn’t one for hesitation. "I can come tonight," he said finally, "but I’ll have to land outside the district. That’s five blocks of open ground and checkpoints between us."

Qingran quickly assessed the risks. "Too risky. I’ll move closer to the edge. Meet me tomorrow at the perimeter. I’ll send coordinates once I scout the extraction point."

Another pause, then: "You’re sure you’ll make it through the night?"

"No one’s seen me. And I know how to disappear."

"You also know how to get stabbed while being clever." Qingran’s faint smile was a reflex. "I’ll keep my cleverness to a minimum."

He exhaled a low, annoyed sigh. "Alright. But we’re not done after this, Qingran. You know that, right?"

"I know. The real work starts after we leave Chengdai. It seems we’ll have to go to the capital for the intel I’m looking for."

Yizhou said nothing for a moment. Then, "Tomorrow. Perimeter, 1500 hours. Don’t be late. And Qingran?"

"Hm?"

"If you get bitten—"

"I won’t."

"—don’t lie to me."

She ended the call before he could say anything else.

He was getting too annoying.

The street was clearing out now. Anyone who didn’t want to end up as bait was already indoors. Patrol drones buzzed overhead, slow and scanning, their lights dimmed like they were pretending not to see what walked below.

Qingran took a breath and started moving.

The hotel was only a few blocks away, but with the curfew in place and infected roaming free, she couldn’t take the street. She slipped through narrow alleys, climbed up old balconies, and used abandoned fire escapes to leap from one silent rooftop to another.

By the time she reached the hotel, the city had gone nearly silent. She used her back entrance key, stepped into the elevator alone, and leaned back against the polished wall.

Her reflection looked exhausted. Grit on her face. Eyes too sharp. But still alive.

In her suite, Haoyu was asleep on the couch, a gun laid carefully within reach. Qingran pulled a blanket over him, then moved to the small corner desk and opened her notes.

Tomorrow, they’d start gathering. Food, clothing, medicine.

At the other end of the phone, Yizhou kissed his teeth, he was surprised and not surprised to see Qingran in Guyoung.

He had a feeling they would still be in Guyoung when the apocalypse hit.

{{So she’s in Guyoung, what’s there to be happy about? You’ve not completed your mission, neither has she. Now with the spreading of infection, there are more and more zombies popping out}}

Feng Yizhou sighed as he looked out the window, currently there were no zombies around as they were being taken care of as they popped out but for how long?

"I’ll go to get Qingran tomorrow, if she’s next to me I’ll be able to think properly.."

His hand curled into a fist at his side. He could hear her voice in his mind, still sharp and confident despite the situation.

"I know how to disappear." She was right, of course. Qingran always knew how to get out of tight spots. But that didn’t make him feel any less anxious about it.

The room behind him was silent. No one else in the building had the same weight on their shoulders that he did.

The only thing that would give him peace of mind was knowing Qingran was safe, out of harm’s way. She wasn’t, though. Not yet.

Back in her hotel room, Qingran’s mind was already racing through the next steps. freeweɓnøvel.com

The thought of moving across the perimeter tomorrow weighed on her, but she knew she had to secure the extraction point and prepare Haoyu for the next phase.

Her gaze flicked to him on the couch, the soft rise and fall of his chest telling her he was deep in sleep. She could afford him this peace, at least for a few more hours.

Her fingers traced over the coordinates she’d mapped out earlier. She was still considering where the best place for extraction would be.

The infected were spreading faster than anyone could have anticipated, and curfews were likely to become stricter overnight. She’d need a safe exit strategy for both of them.

She paused, her pen hovering above the paper as her thoughts shifted. The antidote. She’d need to look into that soon—before it was too late.

Lingquan’s warning rang in her mind: They are connected to military infrastructure, black market trading, and a supposedly shut-down research lab.

The trail she was on had grown murkier, but the clock was ticking, and she didn’t have much time.

After a few more moments of thought, Qingran exhaled and shoved the notebook aside. She couldn’t afford to dwell on everything tonight. Tomorrow would be hard enough. For now, she needed to rest.

[You’re doing well host. I can’t say it’s going to get any easier but at least you’re well planned for this one.]

"Thank you Lingquan. I’ll have to ease the news to Anya tomorrow so they could starting preparing themselves against the apocalypse. If zombies could appear in Guyoung then B city wasn’t too far off."

[Looks like I was right after all. ]

"...."

"I also needed proof, I’m only telling her because I have proof now."

[Yeah. Yeah. Whatever you should go to sleep. Enough of the dilly-dally.]

"You’re just petty because you’re not right."

[Humph! Goodnight]

Qingran chuckled as she yawned, she wondered if she should go mattress shopping as well. A few soft mattresses were so bad. At least she won’t be sleeping on hard floor.

She closed her eyes and cleared her thoughts, she would take care of the rest tomorrow.

For now, it was time to catch some z’s while she could. Who knows, the whole city might be overrun with zombies tomorrow.

"Goodnight Linquan, you can come out of the system space if you want to sleep on a soft bed tonight.."

[Keep your soft bed to yourself!]
