Chapter 177: What about us

"Wait—no, I—" the mother began, eyes wide. "He’s—?"

"He was first," Feng Yizhou said calmly. "He didn’t fight. He just ran."

"But he’s just a kid!" the man with the bloodied hands snarled, dragging himself to his feet. "What’s he gonna do out there alone?!"

"He’s not alone. Has has 139 people with him. I’m sure he’ll find."

Feng Yizhou responded. His gaze settled on the man like a quiet warning.

The boy was lifted into the bus.

One hundred and forty mark was finally completed.

The door shut behind him with a soft, irreversible click.

There was a pause, sharp and brutal before the sound of the engine starting filled the air.

The crowd erupted.

Wails. Screams. Begging.

People threw themselves at the side of the bus, fists pounding against metal. Others collapsed where they stood, curling around their knees. The husband fell to the dirt again, but this time he didn’t rise, getting stepped on by countless of feets. His wife, still inside, couldn’t see him anymore, tears rolled down her face.

She had a feeling she would lose her husband in this place.

"Relax. There’s only 140 people in both buses currently. This bus still has 10 free seats. Haoyu, Sun Zi Mo, head on in. I’ll continue the sorting out from here."

They nodded and entered the bus. The first ten seats had been reserved for them. So they found their places in one of them.

"Now. There are only 8 places left. 1 spot is reserved for the driver. Leaving 6 seats.." bus eyes searched through the crowd, it was just for show, he already knew who he was picking.

"The woman who has a son in the first bus. Step out, I’m giving you a seat in this bus."

No one dared to step out except the woman, many women there had sons, some were even in the bus but they all knew the specific person Feng Yizhou was talking about.

The woman stepped out, she bowed deeply at Feng Yizhou before getting into the bus. When she finally sat down, tears of relief spilled out of her eyes. Both her and her son had managed to survive the day.

"Now that leaves us with 5 spots left. The married man that had been forced to ground and stepped on..where is he?"

The man raised a hand but there was too many people, his ankle had been broken in the ordeal so he could only crawl to the front.

"I’m here sir."

Feng Yizhou raised a brow, he has broken his ankle already??

"Alright then. Help yourself to a seat." Turning to the crowd, he called out the remaining spots left.

"Now we have 4 spots left. Which will be shown randomly. Sun Zi Mo, Haoyu, and you two that just entered the bus. Pick one person each from the crowd."

It wasn’t a hard choice. They all just pointed at the first four people at the front. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

They didn’t know anyone here, the population was too much for them to become sentimental.

After everyone had taken their seats, all that was left was for Feng Yizhou to pick a driver and take his seat.

"I’ll be the one driving this bus, and there’s someone assigned to the other bus so I’ll be giving my seat out. If you’re a medical doctor in the crowd step out, of course if you fake being a medical doctor and I found out ..I’ll kill you right there and then so choose wisely."

"I’m a medical doctor, head of Jieong hospital, B city, licensed for 10 years now. I’m honored to offer my services."

The man said with a smile, he had eyes so blue Feng Yizhou felt it wasnt normal and the way he moved, he was different from the people he was surrounded by.

"Very well."

Feng Yizhou stood by the door, his expression unreadable as he turned his attention back to the crowd.

"That’s all," he said.

A murmur ran through the mass of people.

"That can’t be it."

"There’s still space on the floor!"

"Please—please—just one more!"

Feng Yizhou raised a hand, and the voices cut off with the finality of a guillotine.

He didn’t need to yell. Not now. Not when everyone knew the game was over.

"Sun Zi Mo," he said without looking back, "check the bus. Make sure no one tried to sneak in."

Sun Zi Mo nodded and stepped inside. A few tense moments passed, filled only with the rustling of clothing and quiet sobs.

"No stowaways," he called out.

Feng Yizhou gave a small nod.

"Doors closed, then."

Haoyu, who had been waiting near the driver’s side, reached forward and gave a signal. The door folded in with a slow hiss, sealing the passengers inside.

Still, the engines didn’t start. The buses remained still, silent as stone.

The crowd in front remained frozen too. Some still held on to hope, eyes wide and trembling. Others had already turned away, shoulders sagging with acceptance or despair.

"I said we were only taking 150, so I unfortunately cannot make any adjustments" Feng Yizhou reminded them, his voice carrying evenly.

"I’d advise you divide yourselves into groups, they can’t survive if you’re clustered, divided and find heat resistant places to hide and wait out the challenge."

"Alright! Good luck."

Feng Yizhou turned around and got on the driver seat.

Signalling the other driver, Feng Yizhou turned on the ignition.

{{Community center is 5 miles ahead.}}

The engines hummed with a mechanical persistence as the buses began to move, the promise of salvation growing ever more distant.

Inside, the chosen passengers sat, some trembling, some too stunned to process the reality of their situation.

The doors shut with a finality that seemed to echo in the heavy silence that followed.

Outside, the crowd erupted.

"Wait! Wait! You can’t just leave us!" A woman screamed, her hands pressing against the bus window, but the vehicle moved too fast for her voice to reach the people inside.
