Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1499 - 763: Hidden Truths
Lady Zhou’s face changed slightly upon hearing Lady Chiang’s words. She turned her head to look out the window, and then awkwardly withdrew her gaze.
It seemed that Lady Zhou suddenly didn’t want to continue scolding after Lady Chiang’s interruption.
Old Master Lian raised his head with a stern face and glanced at Lady Chiang.
"Jizu’s wife, about the wedding gifts for Zhizhi..."
"Master, I was just about to discuss this with you." Lady Chiang hastily responded before Old Master Lian could finish, speaking cautiously, "It’s not my grandmother’s fault, it’s all my fault."
"Your fault?" Old Master Lian glanced at Lady Chiang and then at Lady Zhou, clearly not believing her. "I know you’re a good girl. Everyone knows what you’re like; you don’t need to take responsibility for your grandmother."
Hearing Old Master Lian’s words, the anger in Lady Zhou that had subsided began to rise again.
"You old bastard, you just look down on me..."
"Master, it really is my fault." Seeing that Lady Zhou was about to start quarreling with Old Master Lian again, Lady Chiang quickly explained, "...I actually prepared two more bundles, but I didn’t notice, and Duoduo... Duoduo accidentally ruined them. There wasn’t enough time to make something else, so we used some shoe fabrics to make up the four items." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"What?" Old Master Lian was shocked, as this was the first time he heard of this, "How did Duoduo accidentally do that? Why didn’t I know about it?"
After questioning, Old Master Lian instinctively glanced at Lady Zhou.
Lady Zhou snorted and turned her head to the other side, intentionally avoiding looking at Old Master Lian.
"Master, you were out visiting that day. When you returned, my grandmother was afraid you’d get angry, so she didn’t mention it." Lady Chiang said.
If that’s how it happened, then perhaps Lady Zhou was somewhat wrongly blamed. With this thought, Old Master Lian glanced at Lady Zhou again, but all he saw was the back of her head.
Old Master Lian remained silent for a while.
"So that’s it? There wasn’t any other fabric? If there wasn’t, couldn’t you just buy more?" After a pause, Old Master Lian asked Lady Chiang, not mentioning Duoduo or asking further about the details.
Lady Chiang hung her head slightly and sneakily glanced at Lady Zhou but didn’t make a sound in response to Old Master Lian’s question.
"If there was other fabric, wouldn’t we have used it?" Lady Zhou finally turned back, speaking irritably, "It’s because we didn’t have any! You just keep saying buy this, buy that, but with what money? If any issue arises and there’s no money, what then? Asking people for money isn’t easy... The four items weren’t of poor quality; they were all fine materials! We didn’t even want to use them for ourselves, but we gave them to her, so what’s she complaining about?"
"I know what she’s up to; she holds a grudge against me. Now that she’s a Madame Official, she wants to use this as a pretext to embarrass me, to control me. Does she think she can bully me that easily? It’s a good thing I didn’t make those items, or who knows what other criticism she’d have, what grave offense she’d pin on me."
"I can’t even scold her anymore; if I do, they’ll hit me with a stick, imprison me. Now, with this offense, are they going to chop my head off?"
Lady Zhou spoke, viciously extending her neck as if ready to be executed, demonstrating her fearlessness and the cruelty of Lady Zhang.
"Nothing gets through to you, nothing gets through." Old Master Lian, troubled by Lady Zhou’s ruckus, felt dizzy, his ears buzzing. He knew there was no reasoning with Lady Zhou, so he turned to inquire of Lady Chiang instead.
"When you delivered the items, did Fourth Uncle and Fourth Aunt say anything? How was their demeanor?" Old Master Lian asked Lady Chiang.
"Fourth Uncle was talking with Da Niuniu’s father in the front yard; Fourth Aunt didn’t say anything when she saw the wedding gifts I brought, nor did she show anything on her face." Lady Chiang replied.
"Useless coward!" Lady Zhou glared at Old Master Lian disdainfully, "You’re just afraid of them. They have gold and silver mountains in their house, too much good stuff to even notice what we send. Do they even bother to look closely at our things? Could she even recognize it? Besides, who says those are materials for making wedding clothes? Even if they are, so what? Does she think she’s a princess?"
"They didn’t say anything at the time, didn’t show anything..., " Old Master Lian, ignoring Lady Zhou, mused to himself, "Then where did that young wife’s comment earlier come from?"
"Perhaps someone from Fourth Aunt’s side noticed after I left." Lady Chiang said.
"It must be Manman, that girl with sharp eyes, who is always looking for faults." Lady Zhou said confidently.
