Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1506 - 766: The Banquet_2
Lian Shouyi stood by the edge of the heated brick bed, sneaking a hand out to lift the lid of the basin and see what was inside.
Lady Zhou reacted quickly, rushed forward, and slapped Lian Shouyi’s hand. He yelped in pain, grinning sheepishly as he withdrew his hand. Only then did Lady Zhou lift the cover off the basin, revealing two basins: one brimming with white rice and the other steamy white buns.
There was a collective gasp in the room.
Lady Zhou’s expression remained unchanged, but a glimmer of joy flashed in her eyes.
Lady He and Lady Chiang brought bowls and chopsticks over, placing them on the table.
"What are you standing around for? Invite Buddha or something. Hurry to the table." Lady Zhou pulled the two rice basins over to her side and then tugged at Old Master Lian, her tone a bit impatient.
"Ah." Unlike Lady Zhou’s liveliness, Old Master Lian was a bit lethargic. Pulled by Lady Zhou, he seemed to be in a dream, moving to sit by the table.
Only then did Lian Shouren, Lian Shouyi, Lady He, Si Lang, Liulang, Lian Yaya, Lian Duoduo, Da Niuniu, Lian Jizu, and Lady Chiang all get onto the heated brick bed and sit by the table.
"Second daughter-in-law, go get the dippers and sauce." Lady Zhou frowned as she saw Lady He sit down on the bed and instructed her coldly.
"Huh?" Lady He shifted slightly on the bed, unwilling to go, so she directed Lian Yaya. "Yaya, didn’t you hear your grandma? Go get the dippers and sauce, quick."
"I told you to go, didn’t you hear?" Lady Zhou glared immediately. "What, you’re too precious for me to order around now? You think you can just order others? Yaya, you stay put, let her go."
Lady Zhou stared coldly at Lady He without speaking, making it clear that if Lady He did not comply, no one was going to start eating.
The household still adhered to a food distribution system, and regardless of the time, Lady Zhou held the power of food distribution firmly in her hands. This lavish spread was a perfect opportunity for Lady Zhou to showcase and exercise her authority, and she certainly wouldn’t miss an opportunity to exert control.
"Go on, hurry up, afraid you’ll miss eating or something?" Lian Shouyi nudged Lady He with his chin, urging her, "Quickly go and come back."
With no other choice, Lady He got off the bed again and ran out to fetch the sauce.
Lady Chiang placed the rice bowls in front of Lady Zhou, as the white rice and buns were certainly to be distributed by her.
Lady Zhou picked up a bowl to serve rice for Old Master Lian but paused as she glanced at the dishes on the table and then put the bowl down again.
"Jizu’s wife, go get some big bowls." Lady Zhou instructed.
During meals, Lady Chiang typically didn’t sit on the heated bed but sat on the edge for convenience, attending to matters. Hearing Lady Zhou’s words, though unclear about her intentions, she dutifully fetched a few large bowls from the outer room.
Lady Zhou then used chopsticks to take more than half of the best fish, meat dishes, and balls from the table, putting them into the large bowls. The feast was so sumptuous that eating it all at once would be wasteful, so Lady Zhou set aside half of the good food, planning to stretch it over the next few meals.
With such a rare feast, Lian Shouyi and the others thought they could eat heartily today, filling up without restraint. But seeing Lady Zhou’s actions, a wave of discontent spread across the table.
"Mom, this spread was brought for us to enjoy a good meal," Lian Shouyi couldn’t help but speak up. "If you have any rare dishes you want, just tell Old Fourth to send more. He’s got money, and so does the Old Wu Family... We’re living hard, not a drop of oil in our stomachs, and this meal came from others; can’t you let us enjoy it properly?"
"How else do you want to enjoy it?" Lady Zhou scolded, not looking up, while setting the dishes aside for Lady Chiang to store on the shelf in the outer room. With the harsh winter, the food could be preserved for days outside.
"How big of a stomach do you have, for just this not to be enough? Or do you want us to let you eat alone while your dad and I don’t? Would that work?" After Lady Chiang took the dishes out, Lady Zhou finally lifted her head and glared at Lian Shouyi, speaking with a veiled sharpness.
Lian Shouyi’s mouth twitched; at this moment, he dared not provoke Lady Zhou further.
"...My dad should go to the feast, along with Jizu and his wife. You should also go to the feast..." Lian Shouyi mumbled, implying that if those people went to the Wu Family feast, the feast delivered here would naturally be more than enough for those left at home.
"Eat, eat, what are you all waiting for?" Old Master suddenly spoke, interrupting Lian Shouyi’s mumbling. He picked up the bowl in front of him, only to find it empty, and turned to Lady Zhou, "Why haven’t you served me rice yet?"
"Right away." Lady Zhou quickly took the bowl from Old Master’s hands and filled it with white rice, placing it back in front of him full.
"Jizu’s wife, bring the pot of rice we cooked this morning." Lady Zhou instructed Lady Chiang again.
When Lady Chiang brought in a pot of millet rice, Lady Zhou got busy again. She mixed in some of the white rice she had set aside, counted the white buns, setting aside half, and mixed millet rice with the white rice before serving it to the family.
Old Master Lian received a bowl of white rice and two white buns, while Lian Shouren, Lian Shouyi, Lian Jizu, Si Lang, and Liulang each got a mixed bowl of rice and a white bun. The rest, except for Da Niuniu who got a white bun, only received a mixed bowl of rice, without any white buns.
