Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1512 - 769: Joy (Part 2)
Lian Shouyi and Lady He both stood with their mouths agape, unable to react, as Si Lang’s expression grew darker.
...
In the backyard of the Wu Family’s residence in Qingyang Town, Lian Manman and the others had already finished their meal, and once the table was cleared, young ladies and wives from friends and relatives of the Wu Family continuously came to the bridal chamber to see the bride, Lian Zhizhi. There were many from Lian Zhizhi’s mother’s side accompanying her, including the vivacious and talkative Lady Zhang Wang, so even though Lian Zhizhi was bashful, the atmosphere in the room remained lively. Soon, Wu Jiayu, the Wife of Wu Yuchang, and Er Ya also came over to keep her company.
Everyone chatted and laughed, and before long, it was afternoon.
The Wu Family would host another banquet in the evening, inviting acquaintances, helpers, and close relatives. However, the newlywed’s family, despite living nearby, couldn’t attend the evening banquet. As guests gradually departed, Lian Manman and the others had no choice but to bid farewell and leave.
According to custom, they couldn’t see Lian Zhizhi for the next two days and had to wait until the third day for the bride to visit her parental home. After that, interactions between the two families would return to normal.
"...leaving the daughter at someone else’s home..." Back at home, sitting on the kang, Lady Zhang uttered this first.
Everyone burst into laughter. The other relatives had left, but the Zhang Family, living farther away and being close to the Lian Family, decided to stay overnight at the Lian Family’s and return home the next day. Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye also didn’t return home after the banquet, joining the group for a chat.
"You never fully understand a parent’s love until you have your own children. Everyone goes through this," murmured Lady Li.
Lady Zhang called out "Mother" and sat closer to Lady Li. Sending Lian Zhizhi off to marry reminded her of her own wedding day, when Lady Li must have felt similarly reluctant. Moreover, her own marriage to Thirty Mile Camp was considered a distant one, whereas Lian Zhizhi married almost next door.
Lady Li’s initial reluctance and anxiety must have been even greater than hers. Indeed, you never realize a parent’s struggles until you have children.
"No matter how wonderful the daughters are, they can’t stay home forever; you wouldn’t want them to become old maids," Lady Zhang Wang joked. "Sister, Zhizhi’s marriage is so satisfying; what more could you want? Just wait for a grandson next year."
Everyone laughed again.
Despite feeling reluctant about Lian Zhizhi leaving, Lady Zhang was mostly joyful about her daughter’s marriage.
Everyone continued their chatter and praised the sophistication of the Wu Family’s banquet. With the in-law family arranging such a grand banquet, those from the bride’s family felt appreciated and esteemed. After discussing the banquet’s splendor, they excitedly shared stories about the day’s guests.
"Wu Lang really has grown tremendously," Lady Zhang Wang praised, "His demeanor, every word, and smile show he’s experienced in the world. Just in his teens, he’s a genius. Xiao Qi is also admirable, so orderly and mature; our Xiao Long and Xiao Hu are just running up trees chasing birds and fishing, can’t compare at all."
"I think Xiao Long and Xiao Hu are great," Lady Zhang replied. Xiao Long and Xiao Hu weren’t in this room, playing with Xiao Qi in the front yard. "You haven’t seen how mischievous Xiao Qi can be; he’s controlled by his brother and Manman, watching him read every day."
"By the way, Xiao Long and Xiao Hu should start studying too," Lady Zhang suddenly suggested.
Lady Li exchanged glances with the two daughters-in-law, but none spoke. Burner Pot Village was a mountainous village with straightforward customs and little focus on education. There was no private school in Burner Pot Village; the closest one was over ten miles away. Moreover, starting with Zhang Qingshan, the Zhang Family always felt they weren’t suited for academia.
Despite perceiving themselves as unacademic, the Zhang Family held scholars in high regard, which was partly why Zhang Qingshan arranged Lady Zhang’s marriage into the Lian Family.
Now that Lady Zhang had seen her sons benefit from their studies, she hoped her nephews might pursue schooling as well.
"I’ll have a good chat about this with your father when we get back," Lady Li said after some thought.
"Our family isn’t lacking in funds; it’s better for the children to study a bit. Even if they don’t pass the imperial exams, knowing more characters is advantageous. And what if they turn out successful?" Lady Zhang expressed.
"My mom is right, Grandma, send Xiao Long and Xiao Hu to study once we return. Brother and I, along with Xiao Qi, can provide the supplies," Lian Manman cheerfully replied.
"Manman’s quite the little wealthy person, look at her financial prowess," Zhang Caiyun laughed.
"Since Manman said so, let’s send those two little monkeys to private school for some discipline," Lady Zhang Wang agreed, "If they want to study, their grandparents would be delighted; the main thing is, those two aren’t academically inclined."
Everyone in the Zhang Family felt the same about sending Xiao Long and Xiao Hu to study. They could afford it but hadn’t formed the habit, and they lacked confidence in the two mischievous kids.
Lian Manman’s eyes sparkled as she suddenly remembered something, initially wanting to share but then deciding to hold her tongue. Better to discuss with Wu Lang first and sort out the details before sharing.
As everyone was talking, Xiao Xi came in from outside, reporting that the Wu Family had sent over a table’s worth of dishes and many more foods.
Tenant farmers hosting banquets often overestimate the number of guests and prepare extra tables. The Wu Family was keen on making a good impression this time, so they prepared more. The banquet was bountiful, leaving plenty of leftovers.
Tenant farmers typically choose to host celebrations in winter, partly because leftovers from these banquets can be preserved and enjoyed for many days. A customary practice among tenant farmers is to distribute leftovers, especially items like dumplings, to close friends and neighbors.
