Chapter 566: Chapter 291 Rain_2

Lian Zhizhi’s movements slowed down; she had reached the age where the mention of her own marriage would make her shy.

Lian Manman was unfazed, but she knew it wasn’t appropriate to eavesdrop. She just wished she could perk up her ears to catch what Wu Yugui and Lian Shouxin would say next.

"My two girls both have large feet, and we aren’t aiming for a wealthy match, just a common tenant farmer’s family. As long as the household is harmonious, the elders are agreeable, they treat the girls well, and the children live in peace and accord, someone with a compatible temperament will do," Lady Zhang continued for Wu Yugui.

At that moment, the rain intensified a bit. Wu Jiaxing, leading an animal, slowed his pace as he passed by Lian Zhizhi.

Lian Zhizhi’s hair was already wet from the rain. Wu Jiaxing looked around, and seeing no one was paying attention to him, he took off the straw hat he was wearing and extended it to Lian Zhizhi.

Lian Zhizhi didn’t take it, instead stepping aside to avoid it.

Wu Jiaxing stubbornly held out the straw hat, maintaining the gesture of offering it to Lian Zhizhi.

By chance, Lian Manman, who wasn’t far away, lifted her head just in time to witness this scene. Wu Jiaxing and Lian Zhizhi, sensitive to the gaze Lian Manman cast upon them, both became aware. Lian Zhizhi hurriedly moved away from Wu Jiaxing, bowed her head, and went back to her work without a word.

Wu Jiaxing, still holding the straw hat, turned to approach Lian Manman.

"Manman, wear the straw hat," Wu Jiaxing said to Lian Manman with a smile.

Lian Manman squinted her eyes, thinking, Don’t think I didn’t see what you did there. If you wanted to please me, you would’ve done it sooner. If it weren’t for my sister not wanting your straw hat, you wouldn’t have thought of giving it to me. Right, if I hadn’t seen it, you wouldn’t have even thought about offering the straw hat to me!

"Hmph!" Lian Manman deliberately turned her head away, ignoring Wu Jiaxing.

With the straw hat in hand, Wu Jiaxing started to feel somewhat awkward. Noticing Wu Jiaxing’s embarrassed state, Lian Zhizhi’s heart softened a bit, though it wouldn’t be right for her to blame Lian Manman.

"Brother Jiaxing, wear the straw hat yourself. We’re fine," Lian Zhizhi said.

"My sister’s hair is already wet, what use is wearing a straw hat now?" Lian Manman moved closer, purposefully remarking.

Among boys his age, Wu Jiaxing was considered more mature. But flushed with embarrassment after Lian Manman’s comment, he realized it wasn’t that easy to muster the courage to give his hat to Lian Zhizhi was it?

Aside from his own sister, Wu Jiayu, Wu Jiaxing had no experience interacting with other girls. Wu Jiayu was gentle and spoke little, never contradicting him.

Wu Jiaxing stood there, dejected and pitiable.

Lian Manman watched, almost laughing so hard she could hurt herself inside. Wu Jiaxing always appeared so mature, but in fact, he was just a young boy with thin skin. Just a few words from her, and she left him stunned, like a wooden chicken. It really was too amusing!

"Manman..." Lian Zhizhi stealthily scolded Lian Manman with a glance.

Just then, Xiao Qi returned from the house with three straw hats in hand.

"Third Uncle Wu, Brother Jiaxing..." Xiao Qi greeted Wu Yugui and Wu Jiaxing as soon as he saw them.

"Ah." Xiao Qi’s arrival had finally rescued Wu Jiaxing from his awkward situation. Wu Jiaxing had already seen Lian Manman trying to hide her laughter, knowing she had been up to mischief on purpose. The awkwardness was gone, but a new urgent problem weighed on his mind.

There were only three straw hats in Lian Manman’s family, and after much consideration among themselves, the three hats ended up on the heads of Lady Zhang, Lian Zhizhi, and Lian Manman. Wu Jiaxing’s straw hat was worn by Xiao Qi, at his own insistence.

Although the boy lacked experience, he possessed an astute heart. He quickly realized that on the path to pursuing a wife, there were some people who he needed to win over first.

As it approached noon, the sky had cleared up.

"You should take the kids home to cook," Lian Shouxin told Lady Zhang. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Alright," Lady Zhang nodded, "Where are we eating at noon?"

"Let’s go to the shop. We planned to prepare the noon dishes over there, didn’t we?" Lian Manman, overhearing the conversation, quickly suggested.

"Yes, we should eat at the shop for noon," Lian Shouxin agreed.

Lady Zhang then took Lian Zhizhi and Lian Manman back to the shop first. Hosting Wu Yugui and his son Wu Jiaxing, as well as the two short-term workers they had hired, meant that the midday meal could not be as casual as their usual meals.

"Mom, why don’t we make pancakes? They’re substantial and filling," suggested Lian Manman.

"Yes, pancakes," Lady Zhang agreed after a moment’s thought, "And we’ll need to stir-fry a couple more dishes. Manman, go to the town and buy two more pounds of meat."

"Alright."

Lian Manman agreed and headed towards Qingyang Town with her basket. She first bought three pounds of meat at the butcher’s, then went to the liquor store to buy a jar of wine. Since they would be working in the afternoon, Lian Shouxin and the others wouldn’t be drinking at noon. However, Wu Yugui wasn’t just going to work half a day for them; by dinner time, the wine would come in handy.

By the time Lian Manman returned from town carrying her basket, Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi had already made the pancakes, and the side dishes were all ready. They chopped the meat and began to cook.

Scrambled eggs with chives, stir-fried bean sprouts with meat, wood ear mushrooms with meat, sliced meat stewed with dried tofu, plus a pot of pork bone kelp soup. Not all the purchased dried tofu was used in the stew; some was left over, and they also prepared green onions and soybean paste. Tenant farmer families often enjoyed this kind of meal; it was refreshingly delicious.

When Lian Shouxin returned with Wu Yugui, his son, and their company, Lady Zhang and her daughters had already finished preparing the meal.

The meal satisfied everyone. After eating, they didn’t rest for long before returning to the fields to work.

Thanks to the help from the Wu family father and son and the two short-term workers, by the next evening, the fields of Lian Manman’s family were almost completely sown. On their way home from finishing up, a heavy rain began to fall.
