Reborn as a Weak Earthling, I Became the Most Overpowered Mage Alive-Chapter 88: Ch : Making it Back - Part 2
The monsters did not approach Andrew. In fact, they did not even get close to him once he had taken out the one who ate the beacon.
Andrew sighed, but he did not chase after those monsters. He had more important things to worry about.
"Let’s see. If the system can sense the beacon, it should pick up on it..."
Andrew turned his eyes toward the boss and paid much more attention to its dead body. The fact that the dead monster had not disappeared pointed to only one fact-it still had some use, or Andrew was missing something.
So he carefully observed the monster, only to come up short again. But on this third try, he finally got what he was missing.
"The beacon... so it’s still here."
Andrew retrieved his knife before he tore the monster’s chest apart and took out the shining beacon.
The body beneath his feet immediately disintegrated.
It was much different from the first few rounds, where monsters took too long to disappear. Compared to that lingering feeling of fear, Andrew felt much more comforted now.
"Alright, time to head back now. I wonder if Angeline made it back safely or not."
As soon as Angeline had used her abilities to disappear, her flashing ID tag had vanished from Andrew’s vision. And it was still not visible. So he could only conclude that she left, which was the smart thing to do.
He reached the barrier in no time, but he noticed a human body torn beyond repair near it.
It was so close that it was pitiful that the human did not make it across.
Something about the mangled body felt familiar, and he immediately tried to view information about it.
He was not sure if he would be able to check it or not, but it turned out that he could.
[Player Name: Angeline (Level ???)]
[Player Status: Deceased]
There was no other information available, but it was clear who this person had been.
"She got so close and yet too far. I better get inside now and inform the others of what happened. I am sure they would need time to process all the information."
His side would not care, but the refugees had looked like they had been close. They were already shaken up by the betrayal of one of their own, but now to have Angeline die would be a big shock to them.
Andrew reached the base in no time, and he quickly pushed the door open.
Everyone let out a sigh of relief as they saw him.
"Andrew, are you alright? Let me check you over. What about the beacon...? And Angeline...?"
Lilianna asked as she wrapped her hand around his arm to pull him inside. The tension that had been plaguing Andrew’s frame all this time left his body, and he blinked at the sudden sensation.
At first, he was sure that he relaxed because of Lilianna’s skills, but he blinked when he saw no notification of her having used them.
So he quickly concluded that it must have been her and the others’ familiar presence that made him relax.
He allowed Lilianna to quickly check him over before he brought out the beacon.
"I was able to retrieve it, but I also discovered something unfortunate in the process. The monsters will mutate and undergo a transformation if they eat the beacon. So we will need to make sure it does not fall into the monsters’ hands, no matter what."
Andrew warned them, and no one asked how or why he knew this.
A tense silence rang across the room, only broken by one of the refugees.
"E-Excuse me, I do not mean to make a scene, but... where are Angeline and Shawn...? Did they... not make it...?"
The answer was obvious, but the other side still held a little bit of hope that their worries were for nothing.
Unfortunately, Andrew’s words quickly shattered that hope.
"They did not make it. Shawn was dead before we got to him, and as for Angeline... she separated from me. All I was able to find was her dead body."
The grief on the refugees’ faces was real. They bit their lips in horror, and their eyes moistened.
"W-Why did you not bring her body back... never mind. I also realize that it sounds ridiculous to ask this."
The grief-struck members looked so exhausted that they had no will to keep on living. And yet, none of them dared to leave the safety of the base.
"So, about the beacon. Should we put it to use now? Or should we save it for another emergency?"
Seraphina asked, cutting right into the middle of the conversation.
Andrew also decided to focus on the more important matters and put the beacon back into his inventory.
"I will keep it with me for now. There is no point in increasing the capacity of our base."
Andrew told Seraphina, and everyone else nodded.
"Hey, how about we all eat now? I managed to harvest a lot of food for us, so it should be fine now..."
Clara tried to ease the nervousness that had fallen over the cabin, and it helped.
The promise of food brought everyone over, and one of the refugees tried to put on a smile.
"I... let me help you as well. Since I am not good at fighting, this is the least I could do for you."
He told Clara, and she nodded and allowed him to come closer and help her out. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
They cooked inside, and Andrew kept an eye on them all before he heard the sound of leaves rustling.
He was not the only one who stood up at that noise.
"Andrew, is something wrong...?"
Lilianna asked, only for Andrew to put his finger to his lips to gesture for her and the others to keep quiet.
Seraphina was the one who moved toward the door and immediately pulled out her sword.
She opened the door, and the monster outside did not even get a chance to move before it was at Seraphina’s mercy.
"Wait-! I am not a thief...!"
The man yelled right before Seraphina stopped, her blade inches away from the intruder’s neck.
She blinked as she saw a familiar face, seconds before a blade of ice rushed toward her, forcing her to leap back.
