Chapter 690: Chapter 691: The Last Month

After he had finished washing up, it was almost twelve o’clock.

By the time he met Gao Lian, it had passed lunchtime, nearing one o’clock.

Gao Lian, upon seeing them paired off like this, felt an even more unpleasant taste in his heart.

Those who were lonely would remain lonely, and the happy would only become happier—such was the state of society!

Gao Lian let out a light sigh, "What would you like to eat? Although this restaurant doesn’t look very fancy, it is a hundred-year-old establishment in Imperial City, and the taste is exceptional."

"I’m not fussy about food, I don’t have anything particular in mind," Shi Mei said with a yawn, looking like she hadn’t quite woken up yet, "You decide." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Shi Lingyan also maintained this attitude, so Gao Lian had no choice but to order some of his own favorites, and, on impulse, ordered two bottles of Jiang Xiao Bai and then just sat down.

This place was in a corner and relatively secluded.

He let the server take the order and handed over a document.

"What’s this?" asked Shi Mei as she picked it up to open it.

The white paper file looked ordinary and only contained a few sheets of paper.

But as Shi Mei saw the characters on the paper, she paused, her gaze deepening as she read on.

Shi Lingyan also saw the message on the paper and, uncharacteristically, his lips curled up slightly, "Finally."

Hearing this, Gao Lian took another glance, "You knew?"

Shi Lingyan took a sip from his teacup and responded lightly, "Someone was looking for a heart and it ended up in my channels not long ago."

"And then?"

"I intercepted it," Shi Lingyan placed his cup down, his eyes harboring a cold intent, "After all, even breathing is a torment for her, so why not put an end to it sooner?"

His voice was very calm, his words uttered as though devoid of any emotional fluctuations.

Gao Lian clicked his tongue lightly, "Weren’t you childhood sweethearts? The feelings you’ve shared over these past twenty-odd years seem pretty plastic."

Shi Lingyan did not respond but instead looked towards Shi Mei.

Shi Mei stared at the words on the paper, and after a long pause, she closed the sheet, "She is finally about to die..." she said, then lowered her head to look at the paper in her hand, as if seeing the words anew, "Also, three months."

"There’s no time left now," Gao Lian said with a sigh, "Originally she could have lived for a few more months, but she was taken to the hospital again last night, sigh..."

"Did she have another attack?" Shi Mei asked, surprised.

"It’s said that the cause of the heart attack was because... last night, the servant forgot to disconnect the internet, so Miss Bai accidentally went online," Gao Lian had a strange look on his face, "I don’t know what she saw, but she was rushed to the hospital overnight and has not yet regained consciousness. The doctor said that if a suitable heart does not come through for a transplant soon, she probably won’t live past next month."

"Next month?"

"Yeah," nodded Gao Lian, "That’s what the doctor indeed said when my colleague inquired. The information you have in your hands, that was obtained just a few days ago, and now the news has to turn a whole new leaf, life is not easy for this girl."

Gao Lian expressed his sentiment, but he did not notice an odd look flash across Shi Mei’s face.

Bai Yuejie’s heart was failing, and now, in such a critical situation, as the only person who might possibly be a replacement, Shi Mei’s own heart began to beat a little faster.

She turned her face to look at Shi Lingyan.

Shi Lingyan silently took her hand and said softly, "I’m here."
