Chapter 938: Marriage 2!!
As Vedanth’s invention, the implementation of propellers and crankshafts to the steam engine was immediately considered as classified by the military; it did not cause any waves in the empire. Although, in all honesty, the patent was still generated for his unique propeller-type crankshaft design, it’s just that the patent had not been put on the patent board in various patent offices all over the empire for the civilian industries to witness.
Currently, Vedanth is studying in the same college as his brother did, as the youngest college student in the empire, nonetheless. Funny enough, this led to more discussion in the media than his invention of the propeller and crankshaft system. Honestly speaking, Vijay wanted to change the college, as he didn’t want to appear that the royal family was favouring one over the other, but unfortunately, there was only one college in Bengaluru that pleased him in the way they taught their students.
Picking up the newspapers, Vijay read through them.
The major headlines were still dominated by the Pro-Kabaddi League and other minor updates, but Vijay’s attention was caught by a small article tucked in the corner of the paper, and it pleasantly surprised him. It was about the invention of the mountain bicycle.
Well, he wasn’t entirely surprised that such a bicycle existed. He remembered attending the thesis defence of his eldest son, where the inventor of the multi-gear system had confidently stated that he wanted to start his own company, and had even rejected outside investment. Vijay had known then that the boy would likely fund his venture using the money from the sale of the patent. And now, seeing the article, he realized he had been right.
What did surprise him, though, was how cleverly the boy had branded the bicycle. The claim was that this new mountain bicycle was several times easier to ride uphill than a normal bicycle. In Vijay’s opinion, that was clearly an exaggeration. Yes, the multi-gear system did make climbing hills easier, but it wasn’t a night-and-day difference like the boy had implied.
Still, the wording of the claim was cleverly crafted, so vague and suggestive that even if someone wanted to challenge it for being misleading, they wouldn’t know where to begin.
"What a clever ghost!!"
He commented, laughing it off.
Vijay put down the newspaper and waited for Agni’s arrival. In a few minutes, his wife will join him as well.
Finally, Kavya arrived and sat next to him, holding his hand. Vijay smiled, feeling a sense of tranquillity wash over him.
"You have become busier these days. Are you working on a new novel?"
Kavya looked excited and nodded, "Yes, you know that boy Bhavanth Xochipilli, right?"
"The author of ’ The Pirates of the Southeast ’ Series?"
"Yes, him! His work gave me a lot of inspiration. At first, I wanted to write about a spy and police story, it was going to be a short one, but after reading his novels, I got another idea. It was to completely build a new fantasy world and write a story about a young boy who accidentally discovers that he has a mysterious fire-bending ability."
Vijay’s interest was piqued, "Have you thought about the title yet?"
"It’s called Brahmastra, mainly because in this world I am building, astras made by Brahma are scattered all over the universe, and the astras can find its owner. So basically, the novel will be about modern people wielding powers of the gods to further their goals, some evil, some righteous." Kavya’s grip tightened, it could be seen that she was very excited about her new story. However, Vijay had a dark expression on his face, the name Brahmastra gave him a very bad memory.
In his last life, Brahmastra was marketed as the new age fantasy masterpiece, and believing the promise and impressed by the teaser, he did go to see this movie to relax for a while, but God, was it trash. The concept of the movie was excellent, it had a lot of potential, and it had gotten a lot of people interested, but all of it was wasted with weak storytelling and a hasty reveal of the whole universe in the first movie itself.
In his opinion, since it was going to be the starting Chapter for a whole universe, they should have done world-building well by only telling the story of one character throughout the film. Instead, from the first film itself, the world was at stake. In a way, the movie’s potential was completely cut short. If there was any saving grace in the movie, it was that the visual effects were fantastic.
Coming back to his senses, Vijay looked at Kavya.
"Wife, can you tell me more about this story?"
Kavya was happy that Vijay took an interest in her story, so she had happily started to ramble. Vijay, sitting next to her as he heard the story, slowly felt relieved. Although the title is the same, the content is completely different. It is a completely different story reimagined by her. If he has to make a comparison, the story had elements of Avatar-The Last Airbender, The Lord of the Rings, and other fantasy works of his previous life.
Time passed slowly, and Agni finally arrived
A few minutes later, Agni was sat in front of his parents, not understanding why he was called so suddenly.
Kavya had stopped speaking as well. She looked towards her husband in curiosity, as she did not know what Vijay was up to either.
Vijay looked straight at his son, "Agni, you are 18 years old this year, it is time for you to get married."
As soon as Vijay’s words ended, Agni’s heart dropped, but with difficulty, he still managed to keep his expression. He knew this day was coming; it was just a matter of whether it was coming tomorrow or a week later. As for Kavya, she could not hide her smile. She was very excited about the matter.
"Vijay, have you found a bride? Who is it??"
She did not hold back and asked, destroying the solemn atmosphere that the father and son had created. In the end, he could only give out a wry smile and put forward the letter he got from Peter.
Kavya was surprised, "Is it Ekaterine?" she asked, unsure. "Is it really okay?" It could be seen that she had some reservations about the bride chosen by Vijay. Not because Ekaterine was of a different religion, or maybe a little, but it was mainly because she wanted Agni to marry a beautiful brown girl and not a white foreigner.
However, unknown to her, a glint passed in Agni’s eyes, which was keenly noticed by Vijay,
"What do you think, son?"
Agni stroked his stubble and responded, "It is a good match, father. The Russians are far away, so marrying their princess will not affect the current geopolitical situation in our area of influence. They have an insurmountable amount of resources, which cannot even be comprehended, and most importantly, there are two entire nations as a buffer between our lands, which completely takes the possibility of land disputes out of consideration. Besides, even if the Russians want to expand, they seem to be more keen on expanding through the land than through the navy. This is good for us since it can only mean that the Russians are not going to fight for colonies overseas."
"And most importantly, father, their geography is such that it makes me see no hope of conquering or attacking their lands if disputes arise. Their territory is too vast and too untraversable for anyone but themselves."
Kavya turned her face away in annoyance. She didn’t like the answer because it was all about the empire and politics. She could see that her eldest son was a carbon copy of Vijay when it came to making decisions. He always viewed things from the perspective of a monarch.
And while that made her proud, knowing her son would make a fine ruler after her husband, it also pained her. In moments like these, she wished Agni could be a little selfish, to fight for his own happiness instead of always thinking about duty.
Vijay, however, was unaware of the storm in Kavya’s heart. As for his son’s answer, he liked it very much. If one is to take on the mantle of an emperor, then personal feelings and dislikes must be set aside. One must learn to view everything through the lens of responsibility.
Besides, when he himself had first married Kavya, they had barely known each other. There was no love between them at the beginning, but hadn’t it grown over time? In this respect, he felt Agni was much like him. He wasn’t someone who flirted or chased after girls. Even during his university years, he had been completely focused on his career.
"Alright, I will talk to the priest, hopefully, the birth stars will align."
Later that day, Vijay personally wrote a letter to Peter agreeing to the proposal, while also inviting Peter for further discussions on the matter.
