Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man-Chapter 42 - 29: Jie Jingchen, Save Me
Mrs. Xie’s stunning face grew warm. Though her skill was renowned throughout the hospital, she was still a bit bashful when her daughter-in-law lavished her with such praise. "Alright, a hospital is no place to linger. You two take Jing Qi and head home. And you, Xiao Mei, aren’t you cold? You’re dressed so lightly."
Qin Mei paused for a few seconds in the face of Mrs. Xie’s concern, a warmth spreading through her heart. She shook her head with a smile. "I’m not cold."
Mrs. Xie didn’t believe her. She looked at her son, intending to tell him to give Qin Mei his coat, but when she saw he was also dressed lightly, she swallowed her words.
"Is it urgent?" Mrs. Xie asked Qin Mei.
Qin Mei smiled, her gaze falling upon Jie Jingshan. "I’m not the one in a hurry. Jing Qi is."
Mrs. Xie understood. Her compassionate gaze swept over Jie Jingshan. "I see," she said. "Xiao Si, I’ll be home late, so take them home for me. I have to get back to work."
Jie Jingchen didn’t take them straight home. Instead, he led them to a state-run restaurant for a meal. Since Jie Jingchen was paying, Qin Mei didn’t stand on ceremony. She ordered two of her favorite dishes and made sure to ask for them to be extra spicy.
Fish in chili oil and Kung Pao Chicken.
Jie Jingshan couldn’t handle spicy food, so Jie Jingchen ordered two milder dishes for her.
Watching Qin Mei eat with such gusto, Jie Jingchen couldn’t help but ask, "I thought people from Yangcheng City couldn’t handle spicy food?"
Qin Mei paused mid-bite. ’A person from Yangcheng City... So the original owner of this body was from Yangcheng City.’
’But I’m from Sichuan. It’s not a meal if it’s not spicy.’
"I’m the exception. You got a problem with that?" Qin Mei said, returning to her food.
"No." Jie Jingchen shook his head. He just found it strange. Before her amnesia, Qin Mei wouldn’t touch anything spicy, yet now she ate it with relish. ’Did the amnesia not only change her personality, but her tastes as well?’
Full and satisfied, Qin Mei felt content. Jie Jingchen took the grain coupons and money to pay the bill.
After leaving the state-run restaurant, Jie Jingchen took them to the department store. He bought Qin Mei two new outfits and a pair of leather shoes. Qin Mei didn’t refuse; whatever Jie Jingchen bought for her, she accepted with a smile.
They walked back instead of taking the bus. Qin Mei got carsick, and having just eaten her fill, she knew that even if she managed to hold it in during the ride, she would throw up the moment she got off.
With frequent stops along the way, it was already very late by the time they got home.
Aside from Mrs. Xie and Mr. Xie, both Jie Jingwei and his wife and Jie Jinghun and his wife were home from work. Xu Chunyan was inside helping Jie You with homework while the others were in the courtyard. Jie Jingjue was pacing back and forth in the courtyard, looking extremely anxious.
Seeing Jie Jingjue pacing around like a cat on a hot tin roof, Jie Jingwei walked over and patted his shoulder. "Xiao Wu, calm down. Xiao Si and our sister-in-law aren’t home either. They must have taken Xiao Qiao for her leg treatment."
"Leg treatment?" Jie Jingjue’s brow furrowed. He grabbed Jie Jingwei’s arm, his voice filled with shock and urgency. "Second Brother, what are you talking about?"
Jie Jingwei asked in return, "You don’t know?"
"Xiao Wu got back very late last night," Jie Jinghun spoke up. He explained that everyone else was already asleep when Jie Jingjue returned. The only reason he knew was because he’d gotten up to use the restroom and happened to see him come in.
"Can you all stop speaking in riddles? What on earth did I miss?" Jie Jingjue demanded. He had been given a real fright when he’d come home from work and found Jie Jingshan’s room empty.
"That wife your fourth brother married is really something else. She actually boasted that she could cure Xiao Qiao’s leg." Xu Chunyan had appeared at the doorway at some point, leaning against the frame with her arms crossed, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
’Even her incredibly capable mother-in-law couldn’t do anything about it, yet Qin Mei dares to make such a wild claim. A newborn calf truly isn’t afraid of a tiger. The girl will say anything to make herself look important.’
’If there’s even a sliver of a chance that Jie Jingshan’s leg can be cured, then my last name isn’t Xu.’
Normally, whenever Xu Chunyan opened her mouth, Jie Jinghun would be the first to challenge her. This time, however, he remained silent. Clearly, he didn’t believe Qin Mei could cure Jie Jingshan’s leg either.
"Maybe she really does have the ability," Shen Qing interjected unexpectedly. She rarely ever spoke up, but this time was a startling exception. It was about Jie Jingshan’s leg, and after hearing Xu Chunyan’s mockery, she couldn’t hold her tongue.
Whether Qin Mei actually had the skill or not, Shen Qing hoped from the bottom of her heart that she could cure Jie Jingshan’s leg.
Jie Jinghun looked at his wife, a flash of surprise in his clear eyes.
Jie Jingwei and Xu Chunyan were also taken aback. Their son often bullied Jie Jinghun and Shen Qing’s daughter, and the third brother, Jie Jinghun, held a grudge, frequently venting his frustrations on the couple. Shen Qing, however, always disdained to get into arguments with them over the children’s squabbles.
’But this time, for the sake of Jie Jingshan’s leg, she chose not to remain a silent observer. Could it be that in Shen Qing’s heart, her own daughter was less important than Xiao Qiao’s leg?’
