Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 410: Love of My Life (2)
While Adrienne was enjoying her vacation trip with her husband, Lewis stood at the urn containing his wife’s ashes. Camilla had died in prison, and he regretted not visiting her sooner. As he stared at the urn, memories of their tumultuous relationship flooded Lewis’s mind. He couldn’t help but feel sadness and guilt for not being there for Camilla during her final days.
He was aware that Camilla had been trying to ask him to come, but because of his busy schedule, he couldn’t visit her in prison. Lewis had always put his work first, putting it ahead of everything else, including his relationship with Camilla. Now, standing alone with her ashes, he couldn’t help but wish he had made different choices and spent more time with her.
He lowered his head when he heard what happened to Camilla and their daughter. Elise had viciously cut her ties off with her mother to save her reputation without knowing it would cause her mother to end her life.
When he received the news of her death, his mind went blank, as it couldn’t process what he just heard. Lewis initially thought that someone was playing tricks on him until he saw her dead body with his own eyes. They cannot hold a funeral as Camilla’s friends and their acquaintances turned their backs on them once their family name was dragged into a scandal, which caused the downfall of their business.
With Cayden also detained in prison and Elise living the life she wanted, using her mother’s surname to distance herself from the Jiang family, Lewis was only accompanied by Camilla’s elderly parents to see her for the last time before her remains were cremated.
Lewis clenched his fists, anger, and regret bubbling inside him. He couldn’t believe Elise would choose her reputation over her mother’s life. Camilla had made mistakes, but she didn’t deserve to die alone in prison. As he stood there, tears began to stream down his face, memories of their past flooding his mind. He remembered the early days of their relationship, how full of love they were, and how they promised to always stand by each other’s side.
His heart ached at the thought of Camilla’s pain and the lonely, grim fate she had met in prison. He couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt that consumed him, knowing that he was partially responsible for her demise. He wasn’t aware of the extent of Camilla’s misery, and it was a painful realization that he could’ve done more to help.
Now, as Lewis stood there, he vowed to make things right. He would visit Camilla’s grave every day and keep her memory alive. He would make amends for not being there for her in her final days by being there for their daughter, Elise. He would make sure that she didn’t feel the same loneliness and pain that Camilla had felt.
With a heavy heart, Lewis turned to leave but paused for a moment to say goodbye to Camilla. She was the love of his life, and he couldn’t bear the thought of never seeing her again.
"I’m sorry, Camilla," he whispered. "I should have been there for you, but I promise to make it up to you. Rest in peace now. I will look after Elise and Cayden. Don’t worry anymore."
With that, he wiped away his tears and walked away, determined to make things better for him and his daughter. Lewis knew that he couldn’t change the past, but he was decided to create a brighter future for Elise.
Lewis returned home late at night and didn’t see Elise. His mother was already asleep, and there was a set of meals on the table that she had prepared for him. He looked into it and saw that the fish and the rice were slightly burned and overcooked. He sighed, realizing that his mother had tried her best despite her inexperience in cooking. They were used to living in comfort and luxury all their lives, but now they had nothing. No more family business, no more money, no more reputation. They had to adjust to a simpler life.
Lewis sat down at the table and began to eat. As he chewed the overcooked fish, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of emptiness. He missed Camilla, and no amount of food or comfort could fill that void. While he ate, he thought about his next move. He had to find a way to get Elise to understand what had happened and why her mother had made the choices she did.
He turned on the television to distract himself from his thoughts. As he flipped through the channels, he stumbled upon a news segment discussing a recent scandal involving his family’s former business. Then, the news mentioned his unwanted daughter, Adrienne, who was now successful. She was living the dream that he had once envisioned for Elise.
Regret and resentment washed over him as he watched Adrienne being interviewed, her accomplishments shining through the screen. Adrienne refused to answer any of his attempts to ask for help, and he was enraged with her. She didn’t mind showing off the extravagant gifts her husband had given her, flaunting her wealth and success. It was a painful reminder of his failures and his strained relationship with his daughter.
However, seeing her and the Zhao family flourish while his family struggled financially made him hate Adrienne even more. When Rosemary got involved in an accident, effectively putting her in a coma, Lewis thought that his life was getting better. But everything changed when Adrienne defied him. The Jiang family had suffered several blows, including financial setbacks and issues that blemished their family name.
Seeing Adrienne onscreen, seemingly living her life without the fear of what she had gone through, got Lewis’s blood boiling. Adrienne had a loving husband, a successful business, and a bright future ahead of her. All the misfortune she brought with her birth seemed to fall into the Jiang family.
