Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 466: To Become a Monster (2)
Lennox saw one of the three men reach for Myrtle, grab her arm, and spin her around sharply before throwing her to the ground. Myrtle let out a cry in pain. Lennox ran and tackled the man on the ground before he could think and realize what he’d done. Seeing Myrtle hurt by someone made him see red at that moment, allowing him to release all his pent-up frustrations at the same time.
He hadn’t noticed Jasper and Jet going to the other two men as Lennox pounded his fist at Myrtle’s attacker. Every punch was heavy, landing with a satisfying thud. Lennox’s adrenaline-fueled rage consumed him as he relentlessly delivered blow after blow to the man beneath him. If only his fist could land on that person he despised the most; he wanted to beat Alistair to a pulp at that very moment.
The sound of bones cracking echoed through the air, mingling with Myrtle’s cries of pain, until finally, the assailant lay motionless on the ground.
Back at Adrienne, her heart pounded in her chest as she watched her husband confront the men who had taken Myrtle. The rain poured down relentlessly, making it difficult for Adrienne to see clearly. She strained her eyes, desperate to catch a glimpse of what was happening outside. Her heart raced with each passing second, fearing for both Lennox’s safety and Myrtle’s.
Suddenly, Adrienne saw a flash of movement. In the chaos of wind and rain, she could make out Lennox fighting back against one of the men, his punches landing with precision. She had never seen him lose his cool like this before.
"Lennox! Stop! Stop!"
Adrienne’s scream brought Lennox back to reality. It was only then that he saw that his fists were drenched with blood and that the man beneath him had passed out from his attack.
Lennox turned his gaze in the direction where Adrienne’s voice came from, and she found him standing just outside the car, looking at him with a mix of shock and concern.
Lennox felt his heart drop upon seeing the look on his wife’s face. He rose to his feet and crouched next to Myrtle’s trembling form. She was still dressed in her silk nightgown and robe. She wasn’t wearing any footwear, which meant she ran out of her apartment in a hurry.
"Myrtle."
Myrtle flinched away from him, and Lennox wondered if he had scared his wife and Myrtle with his earlier outburst.
"Myrtle, Addie is waiting for you. Don’t worry about them."
Lennox didn’t have time to explain himself further. He knew it was too late for him to hide the rage in his eyes from Adrienne. He helped Myrtle stand up and allowed his bodyguards to deal with Myrtle’s assailants.
He braced for Adrienne’s reaction, knowing that his actions would further strain their fragile relationship. Lennox did his best to spare his wife from seeing his harsh and uncompromising side, but he couldn’t deny that circumstances sometimes forced him to reveal it.
She just saw him beat a man relentlessly, leaving the man almost half-dead and covered in blood. Lennox wouldn’t blame her if she found him terrifying and repulsive, but he hoped that she would understand that he was only doing what he had to do to protect her and their loved ones.
Adrienne ran towards them and looked at his face as if she were trying to see if he had finally calmed down. The rain had quickly washed away the blood from his hands, but it couldn’t remove the darkness from Lennox’s expression.
"Len..."
"Go back inside the car, Addie. We need to bring Myrtle back home. She’s shivering from the cold."
Thankfully, Adrienne didn’t argue. Instead, she helped him open the door of the backseat, allowing him to lift Myrtle into the car carefully. The three of them were soaking wet when Lennox took the seat behind the wheels and drove back to their home at Jinxiu Garden.
Adrienne glanced at Myrtle, who was shivering in the backseat despite being covered with a thick blanket. Myrtle curled up in her seat and pulled the blanket tighter around her. Adrienne couldn’t help but feel guilty, knowing she was the reason why Myrtle was harmed by Alistair. She couldn’t shake off the feeling of being responsible for this mess.
The entire ride back home was filled with silence. Lennox couldn’t look at his wife, feeling regretful and ashamed. He wondered if Adrienne thought he was no different from Alistair. He feared that his wife might think he was a monster who was capable of causing such tremendous pain to others.
When they arrived, Adrienne immediately tended to Myrtle. He watched as she gently comforted and cared for their injured friend, feeling a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, she still saw some goodness in him.
As he observed her tenderness and compassion, he realized that he didn’t mind being a monster everyone feared if that meant being able to protect the ones he loved. He knew he would do whatever it took, even if it meant losing himself.
Lennox took another shower and changed into clean, warm clothes. When he returned downstairs, he found his wife and Myrtle in the living room, with the latter resting her head on Adrienne’s lap. Myrtle had finally calmed down, but the room’s tension was still palpable.
Adrienne raised her head and met his gaze. Lennox wanted to avoid her, but even before he could do so, her eyes flashed with relief and gratitude, and she mouthed him, ’Thank you.’
The turmoil in Lennox’s heart started to calm down. The tension on his shoulders dissipated as he sat next to Adrienne and kissed her temple. At that moment, he ended up not regretting what he’d done earlier. The pain radiating from his fists was incomparable to the pain he felt when he saw Adrienne and Myrtle cry. He was determined not to fail them this time, no matter what the cost.
