Chapter 53: Is Zara pregnant?
Riya felt the ground shift beneath her, anxiety seeping into her chest like poison. The thought of Zara carrying Nathaniel’s child was unbearable. If it were true, there’d be no turning back, no space for her in Nathaniel’s life.
The fantasy she had clung to, the hope that someday she could be his woman, would shatter completely.
’No,’ she thought bitterly. ’This can’t be happening. She can’t be pregnant with his child.’
Just then, Zara emerged from the bathroom, pale and visibly shaken. Her hand hovered near her stomach, and her steps were slightly unsteady.
Helga rushed to her side, concern written across her face. "Young Madam, are you alright? What happened all of a sudden?"
Zara opened her mouth to respond, but before she could speak, Riya’s voice rang out. "Really, Zara... why the sudden puking? Are you pregnant or something?"
Zara froze. Her body stiffened, and for a moment, her eyes gave her away, wide with hesitation. She opened her mouth but didn’t answer right away, struggling to control the nausea still bubbling up.
Then she regained her composure. "No. I’m not," she snapped. "It’s just a stomach bug."
She tried to sound firm, confident, but the color in her face and the tremble in her voice betrayed her. Her flustered expression, the way she avoided eye contact—it all raised more questions.
Riya studied her like a hawk, her suspicion sharpening. ’She is lying. I can feel it. Why would she be so rattled unless she is hiding something?’
If Zara was pregnant, why didn’t she look happy? Why was she acting like it was something to be ashamed of? The doubts in Riya deepened.
Over the years, everyone in the Grant household had seen Zara’s unwavering devotion to Nathaniel. No matter how distant or cold he was, she stayed by his side, holding on to the hope that one day, he might truly see her. But five years had passed, and nothing had changed. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Nathaniel had already asked for a divorce. The marriage, in his eyes, was over.
But now, with this unexpected pregnancy, the situation could shift. This baby could change everything. Nathaniel might reconsider for the child’s sake.
Still, Zara looked hesitant, uneasy. It was like she was guarding a secret.
A chilling thought struck Riya. ’What if the baby... isn’t Nathaniel’s?’
Her lips slowly curved into a calculating smile. If that’s true, I can use it,’ she thought. ’I’ll make sure Nathaniel finds out and believes the worst. Zara, no matter what you do, you’ll never be with him.’
Helga, still genuinely concerned, spoke up again. "Then I’ll call Dr. Eugen. We should have him check you. Stomach problems can be serious."
Zara’s heart skipped a beat, her instincts screaming danger. Her plan had always been to keep the pregnancy a secret and leave quietly, afraid that staying in the marriage would only lead to more pain, just like before.
With Riya’s twisted obsession for Nathaniel and deep resentment toward her, Zara knew she was capable of anything.
And Nathaniel? He didn’t love her. He never had.
She couldn’t stay here. She couldn’t risk anyone finding out about the baby.
She quickly forced a smile, steadying her tone. "You are worrying too much, Helga. It’s just indigestion. I’ll go to the hospital myself. No need to trouble Eugen."
"Indigestion? Who is dealing with indigestion?" Paulina’s sharp voice cut through the air as she walked down the hallway.
"It’s Zara," Riya replied, a touch of fake concern in her tone. "She says she is having some stomach bugs."
Riya kept her doubts to herself. She had no intention of exposing Zara—not yet. The longer Zara tried to hide her pregnancy, the deeper she could weave her trap.
Paulina’s face creased with worry. "Helga, make her some porridge," she instructed. "Something light. She shouldn’t eat anything heavy in this condition. And call Dr. Eugen. He needs to come and check her."
"Right away, Madam," Helga said with a respectful nod.
Zara stood frozen, anxiety crawling under her skin. Her fingers twisted nervously.
’This is it. I’m done. There is no way I can hide it now.’
Desperately forcing a smile, she stepped closer to Paulina. "Grandma, really, it’s nothing serious. I promise I’m fine. Please don’t call the doctor. I just need to rest and eat lighter. I’ll be more careful."
Paulina studied her for a moment, then softened. "Alright, if you are sure," she said with a gentle smile.
Just then, Gracie emerged from her room upstairs, drawn by the noise. She looked around, her expression tight with irritation. "What’s going on down here? Why is everyone talking so loudly this early in the day?"
Before anyone else could speak, Riya hurried over, looping her arm through Gracie’s with a sweet smile. "Nothing to worry about, Mom. Grandma is just being overly cautious about Zara, that’s all."
"What’s wrong with her this time?" Gracie asked coldly, shooting a pointed glance at Zara.
Riya jumped in before Zara could say a word. "I’m not sure what she ate last night, but she has been having stomach issues since morning. We all ate the same dinner, but only Zara had a reaction. I even heard her vomiting."
Gracie’s brows drew together as she studied Zara, suspicion creeping into her expression. Her mind raced to her meeting with Zara at the hospital a few days ago. At the time, she had suspected that Zara was pregnant. But Zara had brushed it off, saying it was just a regular check-up for her PCOS.
Gracie had let it go then, but now, her suspicion only deepened.
’Is she carrying Nathaniel’s child?’
"But don’t worry," Riya added with feigned warmth. "I’ll take her to the hospital myself. I’ll make sure she is properly checked and everything is okay."
Zara’s reaction was instant. "There is no need. I don’t want to trouble you."
"Zara, please," Riya replied, stepping closer with a sad, apologetic look. "I know I’ve been awful to you... I just want to make things right. Let me do this."
Zara’s lips parted, ready to refuse again, but Gracie cut in with finality.
"That’s final. Riya will take you to the hospital. Your leg is still not fully healed. You shouldn’t be going out alone anyway."
Gracie needed answers, and sending Riya with her to the hospital was a deliberate move. She believed Zara wouldn’t be able to conceal the truth with Riya watching her closely.
If her hunch turned out to be right, it might be the one thing that could keep this marriage from falling apart.
Zara fell silent, tension stiffening her shoulders. She hated the idea of going to the hospital with Riya. If Riya discovered the truth about her pregnancy, Zara feared history would repeat itself.
The child she was carrying might be in danger. But she couldn’t argue anymore. Pushing back too hard would only raise suspicions with Gracie and Paulina.
"Fine," she said, forcing calmness into her voice. "I’ll go to the hospital after I drop Zane off at school."
Zara turned and walked quietly back to her room, her thoughts already working through possible ways to get out of the trap.
Just before entering the room, she dialed Bree’s number. Her eyes darted toward the hallway, checking if anyone was coming. But when she saw everyone had seated themselves at the dining table, she let out a small sigh.
As her friend picked up, Zara asked urgently, "Can you come get me from Zane’s school? I need your help."
