"What are you doing here?" Nathaniel asked, brow furrowed.
"I..." Riya hesitated, scrambling for a lie. She couldn’t admit she had been snooping into Zara’s medical records. "I came to pick up Mom’s test results."
"Mom’s test results? Is she alright?" he asked, concern flashing across his face.
"She is fine," Riya said quickly. "Just a routine check-up. But what about you? You said you were going to look for Zara. Why are you at the hospital? You look... shaken." Her eyes darted to the emergency room door. "Who is in there?"
Nathaniel’s expression changed, his face falling. "Zara," he said quietly. "She was kidnapped."
"Kidnapped?" Riya echoed, disbelief flickering in her eyes.
He nodded, jaw clenched. He opened his mouth, about to explain how Isaac was behind it all, but just then, the door swung open, and a nurse stepped out.
"Are you a family member of the patient?" she asked.
Nathaniel was on his feet in an instant. "I’m her husband."
The nurse handed him a clipboard. "Please sign here. She is ten weeks pregnant. But we can’t save the baby. She is too badly injured. We need to proceed with the surgery."
The words hit him like a punch to the chest. He stared at her, stunned. "She is... pregnant?"
His voice cracked.
Zara was carrying his child and never said a word. Was she planning to walk away without telling him about the baby?
Questions swirled in his mind, too fast, too loud. Pain, anger, and confusion— all rushed in at once.
"Please, sir, sign the documents," the nurse urged with urgency. "We are running out of time."
Nathaniel reached out and caught her wrist. "Wait, sister, can’t you save the baby?" he asked with desperation.
She shook her head. "No. The fetus is already fading. If we don’t move quickly, it could endanger the mother’s life."
His chest tightened. Aborting the baby? He couldn’t process it.
Zara loved children. She would be heartbroken. Was this really the only option?
"Sir," the nurse insisted, "we need your signature. If we delay any longer, her condition could deteriorate further."
Nathaniel stared at the clipboard in a daze. His hand trembled as he took the pen and signed his name. The nurse gave a quick nod and rushed back into the room, shutting the door behind her.
He slumped back into the chair, his face pale, fingers still shaking. Regret clawed at his chest. He had just signed away their child. How would he tell her? How could he look her in the eye?
Riya’s voice interrupted his spiral. "Nathaniel."
She placed a hand on his shoulder, her expression painted with concern, but her words were anything but comforting.
"You didn’t know she was pregnant? How could Zara keep something like that from you?"
Nathaniel didn’t respond.
Riya pressed on, her tone sharpening. "Why would she hide this? What was she thinking? Was she planning to get rid of the baby secretly? Or... could it be something else?"
The implication in her voice hung heavy in the air.
Nathaniel’s eyes snapped to her, blazing with anger. "What are you trying to say?"
"I just—"
"Enough," he cut her off coldly. "Zara is in critical condition, and all you can do is throw around accusations. You think now is the time for that?"
Riya faltered under his glare.
"Stop it," he warned. "Just stop."
"I—I didn’t mean it like that," Riya stammered, caught off guard by Nathaniel’s sudden fury. Her attempt to drive a wedge between him and Zara had backfired. The anger bubbling inside her was sharp, but she masked it with a softer tone.
"I’m just saying... It’s strange she never told anyone she was pregnant," she continued, carefully choosing her words now.
"The whole family would have celebrated the news. If we had known, Mom and Dad would have made sure she was looked after. They never would have let her go anywhere alone. Maybe this kidnapping could have been avoided. Maybe the baby wouldn’t be—"
"Stop," Nathaniel snapped, voice cold and clipped. "That’s enough. You should leave now."
Riya’s mouth tightened, but she wasn’t ready to give up. "What? But Zara’s still in there. I should stay—"
"I don’t need you here," he said flatly. "Go home."
"Nathaniel, we are family," she pushed gently, clinging to her place beside him. "Let me be here with you."
He let out a tired sigh. His shoulders slumped, the weight of everything pressing down on him. "Fine. Stay. But don’t say another word. My head is already pounding."
Riya nodded quickly, seizing the small victory. Even if her plan hadn’t worked, she was next to him now. That was something.
"I won’t bother you," she said sweetly. "Your clothes... they are a mess. Let me call the driver and have him bring you something clean."
Before Nathaniel could object, she was already on the phone.
Nathaniel’s eyes drifted to the emergency room door, still closed. Questions pressed at the edges of his mind—why hadn’t she told him about the baby? What was she thinking?
But none of that mattered. Right now, all he cared about was her survival. The rest could wait.
Minutes dragged by like hours until finally, the door opened, and a doctor stepped out.
Nathaniel rushed forward. "Doctor, how is she? Please... tell me she is alright."
The doctor gave a small, reassuring nod. "She is stable. Out of danger."
Nathaniel felt a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding finally escape.
"But," the doctor continued with a more somber tone, "we couldn’t save the baby. I’m sorry. She is going to be emotionally fragile. It’s important to keep her calm. Too much stress could slow her recovery."
Nathaniel swallowed hard and nodded. "I understand. Thank you."
The doctor gave a smile and walked away.
Nathaniel let out a long breath and closed his eyes. Zara was safe.
"Nathaniel," Riya stepped beside him, resting a hand on his shoulder. "You look completely drained. You haven’t taken a break since you got back. Go freshen up, get some rest. I’ll stay here and watch over Zara. I’ll call you the moment she wakes up."
Nathaniel hesitated, but the exhaustion was catching up to him. His body ached, and the blood and grime on him felt unbearable now. He also thought he needed a bath.
"Alright," he said. "Stay close. Don’t leave her side. Call me immediately if anything changes."
"You can count on me," Riya replied with a small smile.
As he walked away, her expression shifted. The softness vanished, replaced by a flicker of cold calculation. This was her chance.
Meanwhile, outside the hospital, Nathaniel pulled out his phone and made a call.
"Roberto, any news? Have you found Isaac or Jaxon?"
"Not yet," Roberto replied. "They have gone dark, but they won’t stay hidden for long. We have already seized the Moore estate and all their assets. They will come out soon."
Nathaniel’s voice dropped to a hard edge. "Keep going. I want them found and begging."
