Refusing to Remarry: Mr. Hawthorne, You Are Out-Chapter 7: Jonas Hawthorne, Please Act Like a Human!
The moment that sorrowful and angry little look appeared, Jonas Hawthorne immediately shot a cold glance over.
Leo Keane shivered all over, hurriedly clearing his throat to ease the awkwardness.
"The most infuriating thing is that kid who showed up from who-knows-where, calling her sister while sticking to my sister-in-law. He even dared to curse at me!"
Raine Sinclair was at least his former sister-in-law, and he could still tolerate her attitude even if it wasn’t good!
But to have a brat, still wet behind the ears, insulting him—how could Leo Keane tolerate that?!
Just as he was indignantly thinking about it, Jonas Hawthorne, who had stayed silent, suddenly asked, "Which kid?"
Leo Keane hadn’t expected him to suddenly speak, and after a brief pause, he stammered, "Well... there’s a man next to my sister-in-law, probably in his early twenties? He keeps following her around calling her sister. It’s so annoying!"
As soon as these words came out, Jonas Hawthorne’s expression plummeted!
Unfortunately, Leo Keane didn’t notice at all; he was preoccupied with figuring out how to secure Raine Sinclair’s contract and had already started ruffling his hair.
"Why don’t you go talk to my sister-in-law, ask her to show some face?"
Just after suggesting, Leo Keane shook his head again, "No, you can’t go. You just divorced her, and if you show up at Sinclair Group, you’ll probably get kicked out! And you..."
He only got halfway through his sentence when he subconsciously looked up, only to meet Jonas Hawthorne’s death stare full of murderous intent!
"Thud!"
His little heart skipped a beat!
Quickly realizing what he’d said, Leo Keane continued to scratch the back of his head, "This..."
His eyes darting around, utterly at a loss for words, he eventually let his gaze fall on the piece of steak Jonas Hawthorne was cutting in front of him.
He paused slightly, "You’re not going home for dinner?"
It was the dinner hour...
And wasn’t Candace Ford waiting for Jonas Hawthorne to come home for dinner earlier?
Jonas Hawthorne didn’t reply, simply elegantly picking up a napkin placed at the side and dabbing his mouth lightly, then stood up, "I’m leaving."
"What? And me?" Leo Keane was dumbfounded. Leaving just like that?
Also, what was going on between him and Candace Ford?
It didn’t seem like a passionate love story, abandoning his first wife for another!
As he pondered this, a waiter approached with a smile, "Sir, could you please settle the bill?"
Leo Keane, "..." He hadn’t even eaten properly!
Jonas Hawthorne, for goodness’ sake, be a little more human!!
——
Night.
When Raine Sinclair returned home, she seemed preoccupied, and she barely ate her dinner before heading upstairs.
Sharon Jennings watched her daughter’s desolate demeanor and couldn’t help but worry, "Honey, it’s only Raine’s first day at the company and she’s been frowning all day. Is she overwhelmed? Could she be exhausted?"
Evan Sinclair, hearing this, turned to glance at their daughter’s departing figure, his expression somewhat troubled.
She was, after all, their precious daughter. How could they not feel concerned?
But, there are some things one must experience to grow.
"Let’s have the kitchen prepare nourishing meals for her," Evan Sinclair finally said.
Sharon Jennings nodded, already contemplating what to make for her daughter’s nourishment the next day.
Upstairs.
Raine Sinclair couldn’t make sense of what Leo Keane meant, so she called Mama Chambers over.
"Mama Chambers, do you remember if Jonas Hawthorne ever got seriously sick?"
"Huh?" Mama Chambers was taken by surprise, having never expected the young lady to summon her just to ask about her ex-son-in-law.
She looked at Raine Sinclair with vigilance, assuming this was a sign of rekindling old feelings and urgently advised, "Miss, just forget about him! He’s not worth your pain!"
Mama Chambers had been a servant of the Sinclair Family since Raine was twelve, and later accompanied her to the Hawthorne Family after Raine got married.
She was certainly a significant witness to Raine Sinclair and Jonas Hawthorne’s love and marriage.
She had watched as the young lady, once adored by all, suffered immensely in pursuit of love...
Within just two years, the once confident, sunny, cheerful young lady had been tormented to tears, becoming sensitive and melancholy...
It was a relief when she finally came to her senses and decided to leave. How could Mama Chambers bear to see her jump back into the fire pit?!
Raine Sinclair was momentarily stunned.
Soon after, she realized, letting out a bitter laugh, "Don’t worry, Mama Chambers, I won’t repeat the same mistake."
"But..." Mama Chambers opened her mouth, confused.
"I just can’t make sense of some things," Raine Sinclair said, her brow furrowing again, "Today I heard that during those two years of marriage, Jonas Hawthorne almost died once. Why don’t I have any recollection of that?"
"Hmm..." Mama Chambers also thought hard for a moment, then shook her head, "Doesn’t seem like it, right? The young sir scarcely came home, as I recall, and even when he did, he would just change and leave again. Nothing seemed off!"
Yet Mama Chambers’ unintentional recollection struck a painful chord in Raine Sinclair’s heart.
Her whole body went rigid.
Indeed.
Jonas Hawthorne truly seldom came home.
Back then, not knowing better, she thought he was just busy and foolishly waited for him, night after night.
Only now did she realize he wasn’t busy; he just didn’t love her or want to see her.
All those mixed emotions suddenly dissipated, and Raine Sinclair chuckled bitterly at herself.
Back then, she didn’t even know what spell she was under...
Mama Chambers quickly sensed her emotional shift and hastily apologized, "Look at me with my thoughtless words! Miss, please don’t take it to heart... it’s all in the past."
"I’m fine." Raine Sinclair shook her head, trying hard to force a smile, "You..."
Before she could finish speaking, her phone began to vibrate.
Looking down, she found a message from Mason Sullivan.
[Sister, did you check the trending topics?!]
Frowning, just as she was about to reply that she hadn’t, more messages followed, four or five in rapid succession, her phone vibrating non-stop.
Seeing this, Mama Chambers wisely excused herself.
Raine Sinclair read through the messages one by one, her expression darkening with each line.
[Breaking news, Jonas Hawthorne’s mistress has been pregnant for a long time!]
[He’s been cheating during the marriage! Sister, you’re really going to let him go so easily?]
[What a scumbag!]
[I’m so mad!]
[Do you want me to beat him up for you!?]
He even included a series of furious and aggressively punching emojis.
Raine Sinclair had just typed a response saying it wasn’t necessary when her phone started buzzing wildly again.
Exiting the chat, she found that besides Mason Sullivan, many friends and relatives had sent messages too.
Some showed concern, others sympathy, while some were sarcastically amused.
But she had no mind to look through them one by one; instead, she clicked on the top trending news.
The headline blared, accompanied by a photo of Candace Ford holding onto Jonas Hawthorne’s arm as they exited a hospital, with large words photoshopped alongside.
"Mr. Hawthorne accompanies mystery woman to OB-GYN department!"
"Hospital records confirm six and a half weeks pregnant!"
Each word felt like a sharp knife, stabbing deeply into Raine Sinclair’s heart.
So, a month and a half ago, they were already together.
And she had foolishly been in love with him, waiting for him...
Jonas Hawthorne, how could you do this to me?
Silently gritting her teeth, overwhelmed by emotion, Raine Sinclair found her vision becoming blurry. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
Her lashes fluttered, and a scalding tear rolled down...
