Regressor's Harem Of Vengeance-Chapter 46. Village Head.
"Ray? What happened? Is something wrong? Come in." Elaine stepped back from the door immediately and invited him in.
Ray walked in, only to notice just how small Elaine’s main room was.
It was meticulously organized and Ray could see the writing desk buried in papers while one side of the wall was covered in papers.
There were shelves of leather-bound ledgers and village records going back decades, along with a fireplace that was already burning with two chairs positioned in front of it.
On the walls of one side of the room was a detailed map of Thornsville which looked like it had been drawn by hand.
Beside the map was a list of village households and the names of each household member.
Elaine sat in one of the two chairs and gestured for Ray to sit in the other.
"Now tell me. What’s wrong?" After noticing how Ray was breathing heavily, Elaine knew he had run all the way to her house, but since he had, then it meant that whatever Ray had to tell her must be very important.
Ray sat down and calmed his mind before describing what he had seen in the forest, including the tracks and how he had detected different monsters heading straight for the village.
Elaine listened attentively without interrupting him and when Ray was done, she couldn’t help but remain quiet for a moment as her brown eyes remained fixed on the burning wood in front of her.
"Ray, are you sure about this?"
"Yes."
"But monster tides don’t come this time of year. I’m sure you know how monster tides appear and how our village hasn’t experienced one in more than a decade now."
"Yes, I do." Ray knew very well how monster tides happened in this world, and he could understand why the village Head was a little skeptical about what he had said.
Monster tides always began with goblins.
Well, they always began with orcs, to be exact.
Most goblins can evolve into hobgoblins whenever the time is right for them to do so, but on very few occasions, Hobgoblins can evolve into orcs.
But whenever a Hobgoblin evolved into an orc, they would kill the king of their tribe, not because they wanted to, but because a strong desire to eat often drove them to kill their current king.
Most times, in deep forests like the forest closest to Thornsville, some goblin tribes had several Hobgoblins within them, but only a few tribes had an orc as their leader. Although, whenever a Hobgoblin evolved into an orc, it developed a strong urge to eat, and it would eat anyone or anything that appeared in front of it.
So, if there was a Hobgoblin king in the tribe and a hungry evolved orc in that same tribe, it was easy to guess who would win if the two were to ever battle against each other.
But most times the battle would end with the Hobgoblin king being eaten while the orc would then set its eyes on the other goblins and Hobgoblins in the tribe.
However, to avoid having a similar fate as their dead king, all of the goblins and Hobgoblins would venture out into the wilderness to find food for their new king.
They would flee into the neighboring territories to displace and feast on the monsters of that territory, causing those monsters to flee into the next territory as well. Thereby creating a domino effect and a cascade effect that pushed these monsters outwards until they reached the nearest human settlement.
In other words, Thornsville.
So, by the time the tide got to the village, the villagers would be ambushed by a stampede of goblins, Hobgoblins, a hungry orc, and a pack of wolves, bears, or any other monsters.
"So, Ray. Are you really certain of what you saw?"
"Yes, I am. If I weren’t certain then I wouldn’t be here right now. I would have been with my family eating breakfast like everyone else."
Elaine fell silent once again.
Monster tides occurred once every three to four decades. But since the last one took place just over a decade ago, it was insane to think that another monster tide would be happening very soon.
But with how serious Ray was right now, Elaine knew that the awakened young man was certain about what he saw.
"How long do we have before they arrive at the village?" She asked.
"We have till tonight if I’m not mistaken."
"Very well. I’ll ring the bell." Elaine stood up and immediately left to ring the emergency bell, with Ray following behind her.
The Thornsville emergency bell was a large iron bell that was mounted on a post in the village square.
From how it looked, it was easy to see that the bell was older than anyone currently living in the village, including the Village Head.
Elaine rang the bell continuously for thirty seconds and everyone in the village knew what it meant even if they didn’t want to believe it yet.
And so, within twenty minutes, the village square became packed as everyone in the village gathered there.
Elaine stood before everyone while Ray stood behind her.
She stepped forward and she could see the worried look on everyone’s faces.
Each of them, Farmers, Craftsmen, Fathers, mothers, and their children, mumbled with a worried look on their face but Elaine urged them all to stay quiet as she revealed to them why she had rung the bell.
"Ray Ashgard has detected signs of an approaching monster tide and based on what he observed, we are certain that they will arrive at the village by tonight. So we barely have a day to prepare before the monsters charge into our home."
The crowd mumbled once again, with their voices overlapping each other.
Now, almost everyone had their hands raised as they felt eager to ask one question or the other. But Elaine raised her walking stick and waved their hands away.
"I understand every one of you has questions you would like to ask, but if you truly value your lives and you do not want to be beast food by midnight, then I suggest you keep your questions for later and let’s get to work."
