Chapter 48: 48. Monster Tide [1].

"It’s still strange to think another monster tide will be happening today." Elaine uttered softly as she stared at the people working hard on the barricade.

"If I had known this would be happening today, I would have written a letter to Lord Fluffybottom." Elaine added.

Since Lord Fluffybottom was now the new Baron of Lord Harvard’s territories, Elaine knew Fluffybottom would have instantly ordered his men to protect everyone in Thornsville.

"It doesn’t matter." Ray uttered softly. "It would have taken days for your letter to reach him, and even more days for his knights to arrive here. So, there’s no point worrying about something that would have made little difference."

Elaine glanced toward Ray.

She knew what he said was right but she couldn’t help but wonder how he was able to remain so calm right now.

After strolling around the village for a while, Elaine could see how troubled and worried everyone were.

Heck, even she was terrified about the monsters coming their way.

But while looking at Ray right now, she saw nothing of the sort.

In fact, it almost seemed like he couldn’t wait to crush all those monsters right now.

Was this strange courage coming from the fact that he was the only Awakened fighter in the village?

Elaine wondered as she pulled her gaze away from Ray.

If she was being honest with herself, Elaine had expected Ray to feel a bit burdened by the responsibility of having to do most of the fighting tonight, but Ray’s mind was only focused on protecting those he cared about.

And the reason why he couldn’t wait to get rid of the monsters was because he wondered just how many skills he’ll be having once the monster tide comes to an end.

Well, since Elaine doesn’t know how excited he was about what was about to happen, she could only hope that Ray doesn’t overwork himself tonight.

The last thing she would want was for anything to happen to him, because if something were to really happen to Ray, the battle would definitely be lost and everyone would be killed tonight.

Elaine knew this and it troubled her heart as she inhaled and exhaled softly because asking. "Have you seen Mira? Where is she?" Elaine asked. "I haven’t seen her ever since she....."

"She’s over there." Ray pointed to the spot Mira was, and Elaine could see Mira demonstrating a few defensive spear moves to a group of girls around her age.

Standing from where she was, Elaine knew Mira was at the same age as the other girls, but at first glance, anyone could easily think of her as a big sister to the other girls in the village.

Not only was she taller than the female humans around her, her body was well developed in certain areas than them too.

In human years, one would think she’s at least twenty-five to twenty seven years old, and that’s why most of the girls watching her right now, did so with a look of utter respect and acknowledgement.

The girls knew just how much combat experience Mira had under her belt and they could feel it with the way she moved her spear during training.

In fact, some of the girls had already begun viewing her with a look that ranged from being impressed to being slightly intimidated both in terms of combat and beauty.

After all, Mira’s plump marshmallows weren’t hard to miss, especially with how they jiggled with every slight movement she made.

For now, every single one of them kept their jealousy in check.

Now wasn’t the right time to be jealous about such trivial things.

"She’s really good, isn’t she." Elaine uttered softly as she watched Mira instruct the other girls on what to do.

"Yeah, she is." Ray replied with a smirk that was impossible for Elaine to miss.

After all, it was only expected for a man to be proud of how fast his girlfriend was improving ever single day.

Elaine smiled warmly before heading back home to take a quick nap.

And so, the afternoon passed swiftly.

Ray could see a couple of male villagers training in basic formations.

The more experienced farmers were teaching the younger males on how to hold a line, how to support the person beside them and how to retreat during combat without breaking their line.

They all repeated this drills for hours until the movement became instinctive within them.

Ray was genuinely impressed because most of these people were farmers, Craftsmen and merchants, so they don’t really have experience in combat.

Even their weapons were mainly hunting bows, woodcutting axes and pitchforks they had hauled out of their barns.

The chances of many of them surviving tonight was very slim, but they each had a determined look that says they were ready to do whatever it took to protect their family.

As the sun began its descent, Ray surveyed the perimeter one final time.

The barricades were as good as they were going to get and everyone were already stationed in their posts

Most fighters were tired from the day’s work but they had no time to make excuses because right now, it was only a matter of time before the beasts arrived.

As for the children and the elderly people, everyone had gathered into Elaine’s house and the buildings that surrounds the village Head’s House.

Grandma Derry and a couple of young girls had taken the role of healers.

Their job was to carry the injured fighters to a safe place for treatment.

As for Helen, she and a few women around her age were instructed to stay with the children so as to protect them in case a few monsters pass through their defenses.

Emma was currently with her mother and the little girl was currently bragging about her big brother and how she knows he’s going to do something cool tonight.

The children she was bragging to, were all around the same age as her, so everyone now had stars glittering in their eyes as they listened to how Ray had fought and defeated a Hobgoblin on his own.
