Chapter 41: The Gates

Apparently, I couldn’t go on my own since I wasn’t nearly strong enough to protect myself if an incident like a GATE appeared.

Gates were more or less singularities that connected this world to outside worlds, and they began appearing about five years ago. For now though, it was still manageable, and the governments in both the elev and human territories had been able to control them with the guardians at their disposal — but that won’t be the same forever.

As the plot progresses, the appearances of the Gates will increase and keep escalating until it reaches the point where monstrosities of practically catastrophic class disasters will begin appearing. That’s when shit starts to get real, the major sign that the Kaleed were on their way. But that won’t be for another two years, if the plot progresses as it should.

Anyway, back to the Gates. The Gates are, as I said, singularities that rupture through reality and connect to another world. The issue here is that because of how severe the spatial distortions are, crossing over to see what’s on the other side is impossible. Those who were brave enough to go in had never come back. So the only way people fight the Gates is to keep killing off whatever comes out of them until they close. If the available guardians are unable to handle and contain the gate and the situation begins escalating rapidly, a dome will form around the city — or at least a large distance from the gate — to contain the monsters as much as possible before reinforcements arrive.

Wait.

I’m digressing.

Anyway, as I was saying, Melina doubles as both my bodyguard and my caretaker, so there was no way I was leaving the mansion without her. In fact, she seemed to have anticipated it and had already made plans beforehand. Currently, I was in a garage connected to the mansion, a number of exotic cars packed neatly about. I had never seen so many cars in one place — not that I’d seen any cars at all in person. Well, I had, through my future memories of this world, but never so many belonging to a single person.

"Just asking, who exactly is Nadia?"

"That’s professor to you, and no, you don’t get to know that." Melina flicked my forehead and walked up to a red sports car that just screamed an obscene amount of money.

"...Sure," I said, taking in her appearance. It seems this is the one thing she actually shares in common with Nadia — the inability to remain in one outfit for a full day. Or maybe it’s a female thing. Who knows.

Right now she was wearing something completely different from the gown she’d had on previously: a flower-patterned blue and white blouse, short-sleeved, letting her smooth pale skin come into focus. Round neck, drawing attention to her necklace and the white inner shirt beneath it. That, paired with a long white skirt that fell all the way to her ankles — or close enough — black shoes, sunglasses, and a ridiculous beach hat.

As I said, she did not look one bit the maid she claimed to be.

"You can drive?" she asked with a grin.

"I—" 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"It’s a rhetorical question, dumbass," she chuckled. The door on the passenger side slid open automatically. "Get in," she said, and stepped into the driver’s seat.

Right.

Unless your family was literally crazy enough to teach a seven-year-old to drive, no one newly inducted as a guardian could.

...For some reason I’m getting a bad feeling about this.

"Fuck it." I walked up to the door and got inside. The door glided shut behind me with a satisfying click. I turned to look at Melina, hands already on the steering wheel. "Alright, seatbelt on," she said, and before I could even move, she leaned across and started strapping it on for me.

"...I have hands, you know," I said.

She glanced up. Our eyes met. She was uncomfortably close right now, near enough that I could catch the faint scent of something floral — deliberate or coincidental, I couldn’t tell. The reason I was being so cautious around her was simply because she wasn’t Nadia. I don’t know exactly why Nadia was different — maybe it was how much she knew about the original Leo, about me, or maybe it was just how insanely powerful she was, but something about that made it easier to let my guard down around her. With Melina, it was different.

She ignored my words and settled back into the driver’s seat when she was done, buckling her own seatbelt. "You seem pretty excited about this," I had to mention it, especially since she was acting even more animated than... normal. Not that I knew what her normal was supposed to look like. Come to think of it, maybe this was her normal. "I am actually. Don’t worry though, it’ll be fun — I swear on my honour," she grinned, then tapped a button that appeared to be biometric or mana-signature structured. The sleek thin-edged corners of the car glowed gold, the screen in front of her flickered to life, and the engine flared on with a low, expensive-sounding hum.

Welp. This is going to end in regret. I don’t know why, but I have that feeling already.

Actually — I think I might know why.

From the little interaction I’ve had with her, I can already tell she has this controlling, dominating side to her. It might just be me getting paranoid, but I’m sensing this very strongly.

If someone like this becomes a victim of my surge and grows too strong — and honestly, she’s already too strong for me — but what if she grows even stronger? What if, just like Angel, she becomes addicted to that feeling of power?

...That settles it. By all means possible, I absolutely have to avoid getting intimate with her.
