Chapter 3: Chu Ha

Chu Ha puffed her cheeks in frustration and turned her attention back to Lin Mao.

"You're so mean!" she scolded. "I waited for you after class, and you didn't even say hi!"

Lin Mao raised a brow, calmly picking up a dumpling with his chopsticks.

"I don't remember making any promises," he said flatly before popping it into his mouth.

Chu Ha scoffed and dropped into the seat beside him. "You are hopeless."

Lin Mao grinned lazily. "And yet, here you are following me."

As soon as Chu Ha sat down, a fresh wave of whispers rippled through the cafeteria.

"Look at that motherfucker," someone muttered. "Senior Chu Ha is willingly giving him attention."

Another student mocked. "What a lucky piece of shit. He doesn't even try."

The murmurs grew louder, the stares burning with envy and frustration.

Then came a heavy thud.

A muscular freshman slammed his tray down on a nearby table. His eyes locked onto Lin Mao like a predator sizing up prey, his jaw clenching so hard that it looked painful.

With heavy steps, he walked forward, each movement drawing more attention. The crowd quickly made way for him, all eager to witness the confrontation but not stupid enough to get in the way.

Stopping at Lin Mao's table, he towered over him menacingly. "Oi, Lin Mao! You piece of shit! Why the hell are you talking to Senior Chu Ha like that?" The veins in his forehead were bulging with fury.

Lin Mao didn't even glance at him. Instead, he reached for another dumpling, took a slow bite, and chewed as if he hadn't just been threatened.

Finally, he lifted his gaze, meeting the freshman's glare—bored and unfazed. Then, just as quickly, he looked away, leaning back in his chair.

The freshman's face turned red with rage. "Don't blame me for what happens next, you motherfucker!" He threw a wild punch, aiming straight for Lin Mao's face.

The air in the cafeteria tensed.

Then—

Lin Mao moved.

Swiftly.

He leaned back, dodging the wild swing with the grace of someone who had done this too many times to count. Before the freshman could take in what was happening, Lin Mao shot a right hook.

Crack!

The punch connected perfectly on the freshman's jaw.

The entire cafeteria gasped as the freshman's head snapped to the side. He stood frozen for a moment, before he slowly.... collapsed.

With a heavy thud, he crashed to the floor, unconscious.

Silence.

Every student stared, wide-eyed, their mouth open in disbelief.

Lin Mao sighed, shaking his head as if he had just done something trivial. Without another word, he picked up his chopsticks and resumed eating.

Chu Ha, her eyes sparkling with amusement, leaned in slightly. "Impressive," she whispered.

Lin Mao took another bite. "I was hungry."

The whispers began again, louder than before.

"Did you see that?!"

"Holy shit, he knocked him out with one punch!"

"Maybe he's not lazy... maybe he's just dangerous."

Then—

BANG!

The cafeteria doors flew open, slamming against the walls.

An old, bald man stormed in, his body shaking with fury. His sharp eyes scanned the room until they landed on the unconscious freshman lying on the floor.

"What happened here?!" he shouted.

One of the nerds from Lin Mao's philosophy class immediately jumped to his feet. "Sir! Lin Mao punched the freshman so hard that he fainted!"

The principal's eyes narrowed as he turned to Lin Mao. He swallowed hard, beads of sweat forming on his wrinkled forehead.

Please don't mess up my handsome face... he thought, imagining his carefully moisturized skin ruined by Lin Mao's infamous right hook.

Clearing his throat, he puffed out his chest, trying to appear authoritative. "Lin Mao," he said, voice trembling slightly. "Is this true?"

Lin Mao opened his mouth to respond, but before he could say a word, a sweet, melodic voice cut through the tension.

"Principal, how are you?"

All heads turned to Chu Ha who smiled innocently at the man.

The principal's demeanor changed in an instant.

His hardened expression shifted to a wide grin, and his puffed-up chest deflated like a balloon.

"Oh, my dear Chu Ha!" he said, eyes practically sparkling. "How wonderful to see you! You are as radiant as ever! Absolutely stunning! Truly a vision of grace!"

For a moment, the cafeteria fell into stunned silence.

Then, from somewhere in the back—

"What a pervert..." someone muttered.

"He's old and about to die, but he's still trying to hit on young ladies..."

The principal's ears twitched. His face flushed red, and he whipped his head around.

"Who said that?!" he barked, pointing a trembling finger at the crowd. "Come forward if you dare!"

Before he could rage further, Chu Ha tilted her head, blinking innocently.

"Oh, Principal," she said, her voice sweet yet clear. "That freshman over there... he tried to harass me."

A collective gasp spread through the cafeteria.

The principal's eyes bulged. "What?!"

Lin Mao, still seated, himself was stunned but kept his expression neutral.

The murmurs began again.

"That freshman's done for..."

"No one messes with Chu Ha and gets away with it."

The principal spun toward the unconscious freshman, his body shaking with rage.

"This... this delinquent tried to harass our beloved Chu Ha?! I won't stand for it! Harassment will not be tolerated in my college!"

Then, just as suddenly, he turned to Lin Mao, his voice dripping with flattery.

"Ah, Lin Mao, my boy... I see now. You were protecting our dear Chu Ha! Such bravery!"

Lin Mao sighed, finally lowering his chopsticks. He shook his head. "I was just eating my dumplings, sir."

The principal brightened. "Exactly! A man of action, even while dining! Truly remarkable!"

Chu Ha giggled behind her hand as the cafeteria erupted into laughter.
