Chapter 43: Fast food

Darius had never been a good cook, he hated having to make his own food, however, he would have to try to make some different food to sell at the tournament, it was a way of recovering the money he was spending. Although he could simply create with his coin purse, he felt that this was too easy a way, it would be tiring just to create money without doing anything.

So, he began the preparations, he ground up the orc meat and put it in a large bowl, it was a lot of meat, enough for at least eight people, but he wanted more, as he would share it with the servants. He wanted everyone to taste it and give their verdict on whether or not to sell it.

Sandra, the maid Lucian was having an affair with, was watching as Darius made the food, she was attentive.

Then the cattle meat was ground, and he took some of the orc meat, which was very fatty, and mixed it with the cattle meat, as he thought it was too lean.

Then it was the turn of the basilisk meat, which was also ground.

The guts were clean, he managed to make them taut with wind magic, he did it carefully and had a very thin skin, enough for the preparation of the sausages.

He seasoned everything, using all the spices he found interesting.

To bread the basil meat, he took bread and began to crumble it. In the end, he had the three dishes he thought of, but they were still raw.

Then he started cooking the grapes with sugar, in this world it was made from a strange plant, it was so cheap that he could use it in large quantities.

He tried making it with oranges, but it didn’t work, it was too bitter, so he gave up and just stuck with grapes. Then he cooled it down and added water, then he used air magic and concentrated to get the carbon dioxide from the environment into the liquid. Then he used ice magic to make the drink cold and tried it, it was similar to the grape soda he was used to. Sandra liked the drink.

Now it was time to prepare the food. There was no soybean or corn oil in this world, but there was an oil made from a flower, it was relatively common, and fried foods were made with it.

Darius fried the nuggets and used the heat plate to make the hamburgers. For the sausage, he used a pan and cooked it.

He took advantage of this and tried to make something similar to ketchup with some tomatoes he had picked.

When he was ready, he gathered everyone from the mansion and set out three plates, each with a different type of food. As it was to be eaten while watching the tournament, he created packages for the journey, remembering the food chains he used to frequent.

Lucian held up the toothpicks and a cardboard package with something yellow inside. Orphelia stared at the bun with the long deal and the hamburger also caught her eye.

"I see you thought it was strange, but it’s tasty, I promise, and so is the drink. I want everyone’s opinion, I plan to sell this food in the arena on the day of the tournament."

Amanda tasted it and remained silent, the others tasted it one by one, and they started with the nuggets.

"What’s that?" Amanda was excited. "It’s the tastiest food I’ve ever eaten in my life."

"I’ll say the same, I’ve never eaten anything that tastes like this, it’s the best food for sure."

The others agreed.

"Now try this one with sauce."

The reaction was the same, when Orphelia ate some of the sauce it fell on her breasts, she rubbed her finger and then put it in her mouth, she felt she couldn’t waste anything.

"Now taste the last dish."

Again the reaction was the same, Lucian passed the hamburger on the plate where the hot dog was, and he dipped it in some of the sauce that had fallen.

"I have to say it’s tasty with or without sauce, but I’d prefer it with sauce."

"I’ll take your opinion into consideration."

They were still chewing, and when everyone had finished, Darius repeated the question.

"What grade do you give these foods?"

"Definitely top marks, I can’t believe I’ve never tasted anything like this, what is it?"

"The first dish is made with ground basilisk meat, it’s been rolled in breadcrumbs and then fried in oil. The name is a nugget. The second dish is minced orc meat and I made a sauce with a fruit I got at the market, the name is a hot dog. The third is made with cattle meat and a little orc fat, plus a lettuce leaf, the name is hamburger."

The leaf was similar to lettuce and had the same name, but it was different in color and the taste was slightly sweet, which made the hamburger taste slightly different.

"They’re strange names, but I’m sure this will sell very easily. How do you plan to do that?"

"As I’ve spent a considerable amount on rent and prizes, my plan is to offer free tickets to anyone who buys an item from the store. To cover the losses I plan to sell food, for the amount I spend on each food item, I’ll be able to sell it for two copper coins."

"Just two copper coins?"

"Yes, considering just the meat with the spices and oils, I don’t even spend 1 copper coin to make 4, the bread is about 3 for 1 copper coin. So I can make a profit. I don’t plan to make a profit with a few units costing a lot, but with many units being sold. Besides, that glass of drink costs 1 copper coin, and that amount pays for 3 glasses. Try it."

They had forgotten to taste the drink.

"But what is this?" Orphelia was so surprised that her speech sounded like a scream.

"I made it with grapes and used air magic to make these bubbles, which is why it has this sensation on the tongue."

"That’s sure to make a lot of sales, and it’s still ice cold. That’s amazing."

"I’m happy to hear that everyone liked what I’d prepared. As a form of advertising, I plan to offer it in the capital, I’ll set up a stall and try to sell a few units as a way of spreading the word. As they are new dishes, I think there may be some resistance to sales. That’s why I want people to leave saying they liked it so that I can sell a lot on the day."

"You think well of yourself as a merchant. Others would see you as weak, selling such good products for such a low price is frowned upon by merchants. But this way you get so many customers that it kind of creates a different logic about sales," Lucian said. "But... aren’t you supposed to be at school?"

"Yes, I used clone magic, my clone will learn and then I’ll absorb everything he’s learned, in short, I’m improving my time management."

It wasn’t the answer Lucian had expected, he had already missed several classes, and he had expected Darius to tell a lie, even pretend he didn’t know about the lie. But the truthful answer caught him off guard.

But in a way, that was something he valued, sincerity was something Lucian liked and he didn’t broach the subject any further.

"Can I ask the maids to help me with that?" Darius looked at them and said, "But don’t worry about it, I’ll pay for the work."

"Yes, you can, but I want to have lunch here tomorrow, so make sure you do more for us."

Darius called the maids into the kitchen, where he taught them each of the dishes and made them try. After a few attempts, they got the hang of it and managed to reproduce the dishes. But he made sure they didn’t tell anyone. In order to maintain this, he made contract magic. In this type of magic, there were a few clauses, and if one side broke them, they would be cursed. The only clause was not to tell anyone about the recipe.

They agreed as they each received 10 gold coins to help him the next day to sell in the Capital and on the day of the tournament they would also help. Then they would receive more money to keep making the dishes.

The arena could hold more than 20,000 people, and he planned to sell at least twice as much food, so he started ordering all the bread he could get and asked for round buns to be made for the burgers, which was a bit rare. But the suppliers agreed to do it and couldn’t turn down all the money they’d make for such a big order.

To preserve it, Darius would store it in Kaly’s item bag, as time freezes inside item bags and that way the food wouldn’t spoil.

Kaly was observing how Darius was acting, he was more animated, and that made her happy. Seeing him like this was rare, so she wanted to help him keep it up.

While he was teaching the maids, Kaly had gone out into the forest, got carried away, and killed more than 20 basilisks and more than 30 orcs, which would be more than enough to feed everyone in the arena. At least that’s what Darius hoped.
