Reincarnated As The Skeleton of a Fallen Angel-Chapter 38. Can we trust him?
Can we trust him?
After the shadow figure opened the door, we brought Mom’s body in it.
"Where do we put her?"
(Bring her closer to that big gemstone.)
"Okay."
I looked closely at the gem in question, and it was around a meter big with a red color resembling a ruby, but what truly caught my eye was the heart-like movement it constantly made as if it was an effectually beating heart.
"What is that?"
Rose asked, trying to figure out what she was looking at.
(It is the heart of this monster, also commonly know as the mana stone.)
"Are you happy now?"
I asked, irritated at the shadow figure after reluctantly bringing Mother close to it, but he completely ignored me.
"And now what is supposed to happen?"
Rose asked as well, clearly trying her best to hide her worries, but the figure kept silent, continuing to stare at Mom.
"Hey you, did you not notice that the queen is talking to you? If you do, make sure to answer quickly."
My bodyguard, after losing his patience, started to argue with him; at first, he was ignoring him, but the moment he took a step closer to Mom, the shadow finally stared at him and said.
(If you take one more step closer, i will not guarantee for your life.) 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
"What do you mean, you arrogant fucker?"
(Exactly what i said.)
"Ooh, somebody is impersonating the big mysterious guy. Anyway, for now just answer the question the queen made early."
(Why should I?)
"What did you say? She is the queen; show some manners."
(Here is where you are wrong.)
"What do you mean?"
(She is your queen, not mine...).
(She is my queen, and i will do everything in my power to help her.)
He said, pointing at Mom. Hearing what he just said, I could not help but wonder what her relation with Mom was.
"You do know that she is your so-called queen’s daughter, right?"
(Yes, I do!)
"Then do your job and answer her!"
(I never received any order that included answering all of your questions.)
"You..."
In the exact moment he took a step closer, I felt a blow of wind passing me by. Looking behind me, I could see the once massive wall reduced to crumbs.
(I have already warned you not to come closer; the next time i will not miss.)
After saying this, he turned to look back at Mom, and he left all of us speechless. We all could understand what that meant. A huge difference in strength, something I only felt from Mom. Now I was feeling it from a mere shadow.
After around an hour after putting Mother closer to the gem, I noticed the solidified slime-like wall around her started to melt and slowly climb and wrap around the gem.
Once he completely wrapped around the gem, the last started losing parts like it was getting digested.
"What is happening?"
(...)
Around half an hour after the gem was completely digested, the slime returned to his original state, but this time around his color changed to red, and the wall was thinner, focusing more around Mother’s skin.
After seeing this, the shadow figure started fading away.
"Where are you going?"
I shouted, trying to grab the shadow hand, but I just went through him.
(My job here is finished; now you just need to wait.)
These were his last words before completely disappearing. Once he was completely gone, I and Rose ran to Mom’s side. We checked if there were any irregularities.
(Rose pov)
As the shadow figure faded away, I noticed for a moment he was looking at me.
In that moment I didn’t care too much about it because I was too worried about Lady Nyx’s stare. The moment he completely disappeared, I didn’t hesitate for a moment and ran to her side. At the same time, Lady Eris ran as well. We checked if there was anything off with her body, and apparently there was nothing wrong with it.
"Wait, Lady Eris, what is that?"
I said, noticing something was shining right below Lady Nyx’s chest.
"Where?"
"Right there below the chest. It is not shining too brightly, so it’s easy to confuse it with the light reflection of the jelly wall, but I can guarantee you that there is definitely something over there."
To verify what I was saying was true, Lady Eris tried to open the dress in that place, but due to the jelly wall, she could not even reach the dress at all.
"What is this thing made of? Why is it so hard to break?"
She shouted after hours of training to break it. Eventually she gave up, so we decided to camp while waiting for Lady Nyx’s evolution to end. We left the tent to the bodyguard to build, and I just focused on preparing something to eat. For some unknown reason, we were still able to take food out of Lady Nyx’s shadow, so we were not short of resources.
’For now we don’t have to worry about the food shortage; the only problem now is we don’t know how long it will take Lady Nyx to evolve. last time she was unconscious for a week and a half; this time it may take her longer.’
After checking all the food, I started preparing something to eat.
While we were eating, I noticed that Lady Eris didn’t touch her food at all.
"Is there something wrong with the food?"
"Hm? No, I simply don’t feel hungry."
"I can only imagine how you feel, but if you don’t eat anything, you will only make Lady Nyx worry once she gets out of that cocoon."
"..."
"Don’t you want to welcome her back with a smile on your face?"
"..."
"I wonder what will happen if you pass out once you do. I can already imagine how worried she will be..."
"Hey, you stop talking to the queen like this..."
The guard could not finish taking after noticing Lady Eris eating after hearing what I said.
In no time she finished her food and went to sleep, but before she did, she said something directly to me.
"You play unfairly like Mom does, Rose?"
Hearing that, I couldn’t help but laugh it off. Before I went to sleep as well, I went to Lady Nyx to see if there were any changes, but sadly there were none.
’When are you planning to wake up this time, Lady Nyx?’
(Guard Pov)
It’s been two days since my queen mother fell asleep, and it doesn’t look like she will wake up any time soon. In these days the queen and the maid went regularly to check for any changes. Personally, I would prefer if she stayed like this forever. Well, you couldn’t blame me for that. From my point of view, things went like this: A strange woman coming from nowhere out of the blue declared herself as our queen mother, and to make it even worse, she was planning to go somewhere, bringing our queen along. Who does she think she is? claiming all of this nonsense, and apparently our queen was also fine with this.
When I heard the queen was going out of the palace with her, I immediately asked permission to go along. At first the queen was against it but eventually allowed me to go. I thought that was my only chance to expose that fake woman, or so I thought. The first time I met her, I deliberately provoked her, just to regret it right away. The moment she looked me in the eyes, I understood it...the difference in our strength. In that moment I felt like the death hands were around my neck.
Luckily my life was saved from the queen, but I was banished from talking for the whole journey. In those days I could see how strong she was. I could not deny it; she was stronger than our queen. If she was not there with us, we definitely could not make it that far, especially since we wouldn’t be able to easily defeat that meat golem.
But this does not mean I would approve of her as our queen mother, and I would never consider her as a queen as well.
Apparently she also knew that, after some maids failed at poisoning her food, she started not trusting anyone except for the queen and her personal maid, so I tried to win her personal maid over to help us kill her, but even so, I failed. The last said everything to that woman. I expected to be killed, but until we started our trip, she didn’t act at all. Now I understand why: in her eyes, our actions were just child’s games. She could have killed all of us if she truly wanted to. I could not help but hate her, that unknown woman. She earned our queen’s trust by doing almost nothing at all.
’And now she is sleeping in a slime-like cocoon, causing everyone to worry for her. Hmph, what an attention seeker.’
