Chapter 98: Amaras battle first stage (1)

The battle had three stages in total.

And now, the first stage: battling Amaras’s zombie warrior army!

The undead warriors rose from the ashen ground, utterly grotesque and creepy. Their skin hung in gray, mottled strips, peeling back to reveal blackened muscle and yellowed bone. Some even shambled forward with organs spilling from gaping wounds in their torsos, dragging ropes of intestines that scraped along the ground with each lurching step. Others moved with unnatural, jerky motions, as if invisible strings yanked their limbs into action.

They wielded an arsenal of weapons: swords and shields, spears, bows, even gnarled staves clutched in their almost skeletal fingers. Rusted iron armor clung to decomposing flesh, some pieces hanging loose where the meat beneath was still rotting.

Despite their decay, burning red eyes blazed from sunken sockets, and their mouths opened to release guttural, rasping moans that echoed across the battlefield.

Mimi shivered at the sight, though more from disgust than actual fear. After fighting through hordes of zombie animals to reach this place, she and the others had already grown accustomed to the carnage and stench of death.

Emilia carefully set Mimi down on the ground.

She then turned to the other two.

They nodded to each other.

"Miss Elise..." Mary suddenly said with a soft voice. "Thank you for accepting my selfish request. I know this will be a dangerous battle. But please—you don’t have to risk your life for us. If things start to get out of hand, just... feel free to retreat. We’ll do our best to cover you so you can return safely."

However...

"Hey, what are you saying?" Emilia shook her head. "You guys are my comrades now, so don’t talk like that. Besides, the battle hasn’t even begun and you’re already thinking about the worst-case scenario? Come on, have a little optimism! This is no time for such thoughts. We will defeat Amaras, I’m sure of it!"

"Haha, you’re right." Mary’s expression brightened. "My bad. We’ll do it!"

"Yes, we CAN do it!" Aron chimed in, determination blazing in his eyes.

"That’s the spirit!" Emilia placed her hand on Mary’s shoulder reassuringly.

"Meow!"

And Mimi agreed too!

With this, the team’s morale soared, ready for battle!

GRAWWWWWGH!

The zombies began roaring and charging forward—hundreds of them! An army of death!

"Now then," Emilia turned to Aron. "You protect your lady and my partner too. I’ll leave her safety to you!"

"Wait, are you sure you can handle this stage alone?" Aron asked.

"Yes, just leave it to me!" Emilia replied confidently, then turned back to face the undead horde. "And besides, you’ll need to be with them when stage two begins, won’t you?"

Because from what Mary had learned about this dungeon prior to coming here, these first-stage undead warriors, despite their terrifying appearance, were actually far weaker than the death bears and death wolves Emilia had slaughtered on the way here. The only truly frightening thing about them was their sheer number. If that was the case, Emilia could handle this!

"Then please let me buff you first, just in case."

"Yup!" Emilia nodded eagerly.

And so, Aron raised his large shield toward Emilia and began to chant:

"O holy light that shields the righteous, Guardian flame that turns aside darkness, By my oath and sacred vow, Grant thy aegis to this warrior now! Celestial Bulwark—Protection Shields of Light!"

Golden radiance erupted from Aron’s shield, splitting into five streams of brilliant energy!

The light coalesced into five translucent golden shields, each emblazoned with a holy crest, that began rotating around Emilia in a protective orbit, a luminous barrier!

With the skill Protection Shields of Light, Emilia’s physical and magical defense would be increased by 10% of Aron’s own defense stat, and her resistance to attacks from undead would rise by another 10% for each shield charge active, totaling a 50% for both effects! Not only that, the five shields could be expended! Thus, she had five charges of automatically blocking incoming attacks when faced with danger! Duration: 30 minutes!

"Whoa! I feel much stronger already!" Emilia exclaimed, her whole body radiating reflected light from the shields rotating around her like orbiting stars.

And it wasn’t just Aron, Mary had buffs for Emilia too! Or actually, a wide party buff!

"Hunter’s Swiftness!" Mary called out, drawing her bowstring taut. A shimmering green arrow of pure energy formed, which she released skyward. The arrow exploded into emerald particles that rained down onto everyone, sinking into their skin with a refreshing tingle.

Hunter’s Swiftness: Speed and Perception increased by 10%. Duration: 30 minutes!

"If you need more buffs, just come back!" Mary called.

"Will do!" Emilia grinned.

And so—Schwiiing!—Emilia drew her sword!

But before that, of course, Mimi’s buff was most necessary!

"Flamme!!!" Mimi commanded.

The black fire leaped from Mimi’s body onto Emilia’s blade, covering it in divine flame!

With this, everything was set!

Emilia charged!

BOOM!

She shot forward, straight toward the army of undead, one warrior against hundreds!

****

And so...

Emilia crashed into the first wave of undead warriors like a blazing comet striking the earth!

SLASSH!

FWWOOOM!!

Her black-flamed sword swept in a wide arc, and the divine fire consumed everything it touched. Zombie warriors disintegrated instantly, because the damage she dealt was simply overwhelming! Armor, bone, and rotting flesh alike turned to ash before they could even swing their weapons, experience points pouring into her! Five undead vanished in that single strike.

"Haaaah!"

She spun, her blade trailing ribbons of dark flame. Another horizontal slash cleaved through a line of spear-wielding zombies. Their weapons shattered, their bodies crumbled!

Yes, as expected, these zombies were nothing to Emilia!

She had even hesitated at first, thinking to herself that perhaps she shouldn’t get ahead of herself and should approach this more cautiously.

But now, after the first two strikes, seeing how weak the zombies actually were, she knew immediately: time to speedrun this!

Because in situations like this, it was better to finish the first stage as quickly as possible to conserve time and stamina! The next two stages would be much, much more difficult and than this!

And so...

FWOOOM!

Another slash, another arc of black flame that burned through the enemies! Two more killed in an instant!

She wasn’t even using her Silvermoon Sword Art techniques—just regular slashes were more than enough!

That was the power of Flamme’s PURE DAMAGE, combined with Emilia’s sword skill!

However...

"Tch! It’s not enough!" Emilia growled, frustration flashing in her eyes through the metal mask. "This is too slow!"

Even after obliterating more than a dozen zombies in seconds, she wanted more efficiency!

Then, on a sudden impulse, she snatched a sword from a fallen zombie by flicking it upward with a kick. An idea sparked—could Flamme’s blessing spread to another weapon?

She touched the second blade against her flaming sword, grinding two briefly together.

And to her surprise...

FWOOSH!

The flames leapt across instantly! It worked!

Now Emilia stood, dual-wielding two blazing swords!

And with a fierce grin, she spun and dove into the horde once more, dancing through the throngs of undead like a whirlwind of black fire!
